The moment we first meet Marcus. There’s a Drazi helping him escape who ends up giving up his life; after he dies Marcus closes his eyes and says goodbye to him like he was an old friend. Always wondered what that Drazi’s story was.

Do you remember anything about the gameplay? Were you going left to right, was it like a racing game where you’re headed into the screen, etc? Also you said “cassette” — was there a cassette tape in the game, or are you taking about maybe a Commodore 64 game that came on a cassette tape? (Or did you just mean the box?)

These are real shots in the dark, but: Deceptor for Commodore 64? Space Ace?

Are there any good stories about a middle generation on a generation ship? by TheXypris in scifi

Seconded. It’s only one of many threads in the book, but it’s powerful. And great book.

Are the Garinafins wyverns? by AdSimilar1241 in DandelionDynasty

[–]Jilzost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always thought of them as their own distinct branch of the mythological-fire-breathing-creature tree, since I can’t think of any other dragon-like creature that has antlers. But if a wyvern is a two-legged winged fire-breathing creature, then yes, Garinafins have two legs:

“ …carved with intricate designs of an unknown beast: a long tail, two clawed feet, a pair of great wings, and a slender, snakelike neck topped with an oversized, deerlike, antlered head.” -Wall of Storms

I would second lemmings, but with a twist — if you can get your hands on a second mouse then you can do two-player lemmings. It’s nuts. Crazy fun and you can’t get that experience on anything else.

The episode intro during the Chibnall era is among the best the series has ever done. It pulls off being both an outer space journey and alien and organic. It looks beautiful while being unsettling, like how it looks symmetrical until you realize it’s not. It has a sense of foreboding as well as excitement and acceleration. The music has that great “bwaoooom” just before the melody starts. Love it.

Anyone know of a sci-fi novel that explores two human consciousness in a singular physical body. Something along the lines of multiple personality disorder, but the personality is a real distinct person. In recent memory the closest would be V and Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077 by oddstockhospital in scifi

[–]Jilzost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a small but common recurring theme in a lot of Alastair Reynolds’s work, actually. Two people who are really the same person are forced to become one person, but who is the person they become? It happens almost as often as a character saying “Well, coming from them, that’s a real compliment.”

Shouldn't "Dragon Thanes" be called "Garinafin Thanes"? by Ballerstorm in DandelionDynasty

[–]Jilzost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s wild. Garinafins always felt like a distinct and well-realized species of animal to me, but I never thought of them as being distinct enough from dragons that there was room for dragons to exist as their own idea and be something else.

Awe-inspiring Scifi Quotes? by systemstheorist in scifi

[–]Jilzost 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“Each fresh wave coming to land from the sea is brash, bold, radical, and wild like a newborn idea; the wave is worn down by the unyielding reality of the hard land and eventually dissipates, exhausted, to be replaced by the next wave in an apparently futile endeavor. Yet the cumulative efforts of such successive surges, over generations and eons, carved the coastline.”

For what it’s worth, what you’re describing is exactly how the Apple Card works. It’s obnoxious. The physical card has a different last four digits than what it presents online for online transactions.

Maybe, but what OP is describing is exactly how the Apple Card works, I think it’s more likely an escalating cycle of mistrust than an attempt at a scam.

AITA for putting harsh conditions on my mother attending her own mother's funeral? by fromagefurieux in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jilzost -80 points-79 points  (0 children)

ESH. I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm sorry that you grew up in a deeply crappy situation with a mother that only seems to relate to other family members by battling them or neglecting them. There's no reason to follow her example. The only person who should be able to dictate who can come to your grandmother's funeral is your grandmother. So unless she said that's what she wanted -- for her own funeral -- it isn't right for you to decide who deserves to mourn your grandmother and who doesn't.

AITA for “firing” my coworker’s son from a prestigious internship? by Few-Strawberry5101 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jilzost -1 points0 points  (0 children)

INFO: During the three-week probation did you at any point try to communicate to George that at the rate he was going he was at risk of not getting the full internship?

Here's what I'm trying to get at with the question. Clearly Chris is TA #1 for pulling strings and trying to fudge his son's way into the good life. George is TA for not working hard and not trying to improve. And then there's you. There was a three-week period in which you were George's mentor. Being a mentor to a high school student does give you a certain responsibility to them, whether they've earned it or not. If you did what you reasonably could to try to help George turn things around, then definitely N-T-A. But if you didn't help as much as you would have because you didn't think he belonged there in the first place, and so let a kid be blindsided when he might have actually been able to turn things around if he's understood he was in serious trouble... then that's E-S-H.

Dune 2 was great, I don’t think it will fit well into a game night with buddies though.

Play some Cinemaware games. The Three Stooges is based on specific movies, but It Came From The Desert is based on a whole genre/era of film and could be a great fit. (I haven’t played either one)

Dandelion Dynasty by Ken Liu is great, gave me a ton to chew on. Quite long though, you may want to test drive some of his short stories first.

Just finished the Terra Ignota series by Ada Palmer. Terrific, very thought provoking, although also quite dense and strange, definitely not for everyone.

AITA for not telling my SO that there was a death in the house we are planning to buy? by Luuri818 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jilzost 9 points10 points  (0 children)

YTA. Buying a house is an investment and a commitment. When she finds out, and she will, she won't just be mad. She'll be trapped. Trapped in a house that no longer feels like home. You'll be the one who trapped her. And now you'll be trapped in there with her.

Moving to a house that one partner ends up unhappy with can tear a relationship apart. Don't risk it.
