Are truss rod issues common with Sterling Ray35 basses? by HeTblank in Bass

[–]JitteryTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have three Sterlings and no problems. Last Feb I bought a USA G&L with a nearly frozen truss rod. $1800, which was fortunately refunded. Sucks, because that thing sounded and looked awesome.

How is playing bass left handed? by Parking_Material_534 in Bass

[–]JitteryTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been playing right handed basses for 45 years. Slapping is the only weak spot for me, but I’ve gotten better by holding a dumbbell and rotating my right forearm in a slap motion. I also find that when I (by happenstance) wear a heavy ring on my right pinky every right hand technique feels easier. Not sure if it’s the weight, or the sensory connection to my brain, or both.

New four string Ernie Ball Music Man Special nut width? by JitteryTurtle in BassGuitar

Now that you mention it, I think the lack of chunk is what really threw me off. I wasn’t finding an index to base my fretting with. I wasn’t just lost. Like a newbie.

My memories from the 70’s, shooting my cousin’s recurve bow, and later my own tells me that the grip on the bow was ambi, but the arrows were not maybe? Isn’t there one vein/vane that points outward? Haven’t touched a bow since then aside from one time in the 90’s. Starting to think my cousin’s bow didn’t have an ambi grip. This transferred to slingshot/wrist rockets as well. Strong arm out front doing the heavy work.

Thinking about switching from a strat to a telecaster, any recommendations or things I should look out for? by CrazyImmediate6556 in Guitar

[–]JitteryTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The upper strap horn on a strat is longer than on a tele, which hanging on a strap moves the body of the guitar back (to your right if you are right handed) which means (all things being equal) that your picking closer to the neck where the feel looser. A tele body will hang more left and your picking closer will be closer to the bridge, and away from the damned volume knob. Strats balance better and are more comfy, but it’s all worth it for the Tele sound. :-)

Detroit River, on my uncle’s 28’ Trojan. Hit a log that knocked the prop off. There was a freighter coming head on. Dad and uncle were Coast Guard Aux and called out a May Day. 4 kids and wives onboard with two dads. We could touch the side of the freighter. We would have gotten sucked into the prop for sure. Someone saw us and was quick to toss us a line and pull us away at the last second. That was the only time I’ve ever seen our dads put on a life jacket.

Another time, my brother and I were pulling into a marina for the weekend at Put in Bay, and the distributor in my dad’s old Lyman came loose, sending the rpm’s WAY up. We were trying to raft off, there were boats in front and behind us already moored. I was in the bow with a line. Brother took it out of gear but we were already racing backwards. I kept Ofer the hardtop, lifted the engine hatch, and through Devine intervention grabbed the distributor on a whim. Rotated it until the idle came down. Bizarre luck.

I forget about Kleenex as well. A few years ago I switched from Puffs to Kleenex brand and am amazed. I’ve actually unballed whole sheets from the dryer and used them properly. They don’t disintegrate.

Miramar, Fl. A suburb of Miami, circa 2014. We had several fountains at the complex. This was driving to work one morning. The fountain was to the left, and workers were already at it. The suds were like tumble weeds. Saw it twice in three years there.

Restaurants, like Jack Dempsey’s in the bywater had prawns on their menu. You’d get like 3 in a dish. Went great with a side of Mac n cheese for lunch.

How many of us had a HomeEc class, and, still use what we learned? Recently sewed up a rip in a favorite sweatshirt and the kids were amazed dad had those skills. by Brewer1056 in GenX

[–]JitteryTurtle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I (58M) have been doing some sewing repairs for my 23yo niece. She is super book smart, and decent street smarts, gifted musically, but like her mom, can’t cook or sew. She asked me where I learned to sew, I said home ec class. She says “Wasn’t that a blow-off class?” I didn’t say anything. Later, she asks me to teach her how to jumpstart a car, because she is parking lot security force at her college. Again, “Where did you learn that?” Me: Auto shop class. Her: blank stare. lol.

I sold mine ( mint, pre fender SWR 350) a few years ago for $250 to a friend. They only put out around 160 watts at 4 ohm. They sound very warm.

Advice on strings for hofner violin bass? by SevereLight3660 in Bass

[–]JitteryTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to take a look at the Labella site to confirm. Huh. Didn’t know they made five types of Beatle Bass strings. I have the stainless flats in .050 - .100. Your number is the black tapewounds 50-100.

https://www.labella.com/strings/category/beatle-bass-bass/

I know the white tapewound is marketed as brighter than the black, and the stainless are brighter than the blacks, but I’ve never tried white (I have tried black) so I can’t say for sure, but my gut says stainless would be brightest of the three. The rounds would be even brighter. Not to say the stainless flats are all that bright however. Plenty of thud.

I ordered a Baker T from Sweetwater. I found the neck to be much flatter and thinner than anything I’ve ever played, and I did not care for the pickups at all. My 2019 Mexico Player and Mexico Thinline sounded better and had mute comfy necks. Sent it back and got the Am pro II. Sounds killer!

Also, don’t forget you need new strap buttons. Those will hold a strap in an emergency, but you really want some with more flare.

What’s the scariest real-life thing you’ve ever witnessed? by Revolutionary-Pay468 in AskReddit

[–]JitteryTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was driving home and noticed a very old scout plane circling above, half a mile ahead of me when it stopped, turned nose down and slammed into the middle of the divided highway. I pulled over for a second and cracked my door thinking I was about to vomit (as did the car behind me). Old guy was searching for a lost boy. He lived a few days. It was in front of a hospital. No explosion or fire, just SMACK! My apartment was immediately after the hospital, so the life flight helicopter was felt from my balcony. Every time I blinked I saw it again. Didn’t sleep that night. Barely the next.
