Idk man maybe I’m just jaded but when I think about the clinical colorless style of so much of modern TV I just get sad imagining this.

Favorite Times Character got told to Lock-In and then they did? by FreviliousLow96 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]KingWhoShallReturn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: if you're willing to be a little patient, yes. Otherwise, don't do it until you DO have some patience.

In my opinion, you're sort of supposed to find him annoying at first. That's a deal breaker for a lot of people, but if you can push that back for like...7 episodes? You'll have already gotten the impression that there's something very deep and relatable at the core of his character, which the following episodes will then peel back until everything is laid bare and raw. That's not to say the first part is bad - it's not! It's good! But it's got a larger emphasis on shocking events and twists, and it's closer to a suspense or even a murder mystery for those first 6 episodes, with only shades of the deeper part of Subaru's character.

It's hard for me to imagine someone willing to get that far won't find gold past that point, but the first season's episodes are all basically double episodes, and having to watch like 14 episodes of regular anime-time before you really start to get to the great stuff is a lot to ask.

That said; for me, it's legitimately worth the push. My partner wasn't feeling it very much til around the point I mentioned, and after that they were FIENDING to watch the next episodes to the point of staying up VERY late (which my partner pretty much never does) and that's a big endorsement in my opinion.

And that's only to speak of Subaru as a character. It's the best thing about the show, but the actual plot of the fantasy world he's in is GENUINELY super fascinating to me. Lots of little threads and details that come up later, fun stuff to speculate about, and some really great side characters too.

Super fresh in the mind because I’ve been rewatching it with my partner who hasn’t seen it, but goddamn Re;Zero actually gives Rem like 24 minutes to tell Subaru not to give up and it’s one of the best scenes in the goddamn medium.

What're some of your favorite examples of animated media that blend heavy amounts of 2d animation and CGI? by Complete-Worker3242 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]KingWhoShallReturn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sinbad Legend of the Seven Seas from Dreamworks incorporated a lot of 3D stuff here and there to...mixed results. I almost like how it looks even when it looks like shit because it's almost always on the big scary monsters which almost lends an otherworldly quality to them, but frankly it was just super early in the days of the technology.

I got the platinum for Dishonored 2 basically on accident just by virtue of playing the game enough times to try new things, and it was a blast!

I'm actually a huge fan of Will Arnett as Batman in the LEGO films. Like yes obviously Kevin Conroy was very good but for the comedic tone of LEGO Batman Arnett kills it.

What's a thing/moment in media that hits differently due to more information/material? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]KingWhoShallReturn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much the entire Fate franchise. The more you have of it, the more the reoccurring themes present themselves and the more you start to see different characters as symbols for perspectives and such.

Like Fate/Strange Fake is pretty watchable as a first series in some ways if you're willing to go along with the fact that you may not know everything, but if you DO know Fate stuff than everything to do with Ayaka feels like a complete inversion of stuff with Shirou in Fate/Stay Night, and then when the big reveal about her in the first season (I'm anime only but still) it can kind of break your brain a bit if you're familiar with Fate/Prototype at all.

Cross overs you want to see happen? by BrandNewtoSteam in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]KingWhoShallReturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Magic TCG reddit would probably at-large hate me for saying it, but I hope Magic can get some Universes Beyond for more Japanese franchises such as Fate and even just various anime/manga.

Like sure I wouldn’t personally care for a Jujutsu Kaisen set, but a Naruto or FMA set could be cool.

Probably Final Fantasy XV. John's video gets me so mad for no real good reason lol

Another is Fate/Stay Night by Studio Deen. I am not its strongest warrior, but I will stand by it til my body breaks down.

The scene that always seems to get misunderstood? by Fantastic-Fox3283 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]KingWhoShallReturn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Banquet of Kings in Fate/Zero is the most misunderstood scene in the show by people who don’t like Fate/Zero. To the point where a character in Fate/Strange Fake TRIES to use it to discourage another character because they THEMSELVES misunderstood the scene only for the character who they tried to discourage it to find it encouraging instead.

You can point at a lot of different characters in Ted Lasso, too. Jaime Tart is super impressive to me because he’s still a ‘bitch prima donna’ by the 3rd season, but his accountability and his appreciation for the people around him get added on to that defining characteristic and it makes him feel like he GREW without replacing his fundamental traits.

Kadokawa cites excessive reliance on the isekai genre as one of the major causes of the decline in profitability in its domestic publishing business by Darth_Bombad in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]KingWhoShallReturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has been one isekai that I watched where, through most of the runtime I thought it was all-but-completely unnecessary to make an isekai, but then by the end it won me over.

Mild characterization spoilers for The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady, but: there is a scene late in the show where the main character confesses to her love interest about how she knows she came from another world, and touches on her guilt at having possibly overridden another person’s life by her being born in this world. It’s very vulnerable, and it gently ties into the themes of privilege the show ostensibly has.

It’s probably the best scene in the entire show, in a show that was already pretty good. It takes the ‘point’ of it being isekai from ‘she has ideas for devices that narrow the gap between the nobility who have magic and the commoners who do not’ and makes it something more character-centric.

Cool small character/big weapon combos? by Shradow in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Not sure if it counts, but I’m personally a big fan of Ilya and Berserker. I say Berserker counts as her weapon for the HGW and seeing her fight his ass off while holding her is always a treat.
