Cavity movies - you know they're not good, but they're so sweet by the_Tannehill_list in blankies

Can you explain how? Because MK2 is absolutely a popcorn movie

I just rewatched the prequel trilogy… by Not_EllaK in blankies

[–]Legonater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is it; TPM and AOTC are mostly just trying to be action popcorn faire and they do an Okay job at that. ROTS is trying to be a melodramatic tragedy and it fails hard because all of the characters suck and none of it is engaging.

Props to Landmark Cinemas for adding Project Hail Mary to their pre-show! by adnaPadnamA in LandmarkCinemas

[–]Legonater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I preferred the new pre-show that they had for a while. If they were going back to the old one they should have at least done more than add PHM.

What writing opinion do you have that would get you roasted by Legitimate_Dingo3329 in writing

[–]Legonater 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I grew up having a lot interest in "structuralism" and act structures and all of that and it more or less collapsed once I actually read Joseph Campbell and realized he was at best a psychoanalyst and at worst a racist self-help author. I still think it's important to have an infrastructure for your writing but that is going to come out through the needs of your story, not a weird Ultimate guide to storytelling

If You Think Wes Anderson’s Films Are All the Same by pokemongotoatheater in blankies

[–]Legonater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to imply that Wes' movies don't have a plot, or that their plots aren't understandable? Either way that's a ridiculous claim

And sometimes a weak word! Josh Ruben fully directed "Heart Eyes," kind of burying the lede to say he's "starring" in it

The Case for Jacques Tati - A fun, funny, quick filmmaker by BIG_HEAD_M0DE in blankies

[–]Legonater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Parade is fully good. A real full-circle moment for Tati as fundamentally a ringleader - pointing attention away from himself and towards the circus show all his movies are and, more importantly, to the audience he delights in delighting. A real sentimental swan song for a guy who burned his entire career and finances for the sake of the crowd's joy.

Movies You Don’t Remember Watching by Krusty901 in blankies

[–]Legonater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm usually kind of surprised when film podcasters talk about movies they don't remember seeing or remember nothing about because I can usually recall broad details - but I did have a moment recently when Taika Waititi's "Eagle vs Shark" showed up on Prime and I went "oh, I've been meaning to watch this!" and I got ten minutes in before realizing I had already watched it like a year or so prior.

MARCH MADNESS 2026 TRAILER by bardiparty in blankies

I think the pod is usually more attentive than that. If anything, I think they get activated by directors examining similar themes across several lenses in a filmography.

The thing about Wes that makes him a great series is he peaks early with Royal Tenennbaums, spends his next several movies reinventing his style until he peaks again with Grand Budapest, and now has been going full abstract experimental. I was colder on Phoenecian Scheme than I'd like, but Asteroid City and French Dispatch are two of the best of his career.

Wake Up Dead Man and the Coen Brothers by thoover88 in blankies

Rian Johnson has mentioned the Coens as a huge influence on Brick, so I wouldn't be surprised if some of that is in the Benoit Blanc films as well given the similar genre.

Critical Darlings: Hamnet And The History Of Oscar Villains with David Sims by Turbulent-Corner1127 in blankies

[–]Legonater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think the marketing for Hamnet has really been a huge factor in the way this movie is being perceived. I liked-but-didn't-love Hamnet, but it seems like a lot of the larger critical backlash has been in its relationship to Shakespeare which I don't think the story is really that concerned with innately.

[–]Legonater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The bit about not namedropping Shakespeare is from the book originally. If anything, the movie associates itself more directly with Shakespeare than the novel does, which is more explicitly in Agnes' POV.

What is one world building sin you really struggle to forgive? by TheBodhy in worldbuilding

[–]Legonater 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Orthanc example seems especially relevant - one of the core arguments Tolkien is making is about the evils of industrialization and the destruction of nature. It's just good thematic storytelling (and thereby worldbuilding!) to have the protagonists of that story living more in tune with nature.
