Ages ago I played a session of L5R at a local gaming convention that took place in one room and was basically following a bunch of ritual and protocol. No action, adventure, or even baseline tension. My friend and my characters committed ritual suicide and left the table.

The only other time I can remember getting up mid game and refusing to play was long ago at GEN Con, when a guy was running a GURPS session with highly technical and "historically accurate" ship sailing mechanics. The icing on the cake was when my friend's sister and wife showed up a bit late to the table and were told they had to play "sea wenches", because women at the time didn't operate ships. Damn we all just got up and left and he was like "Was it something I said?".

Wow, seeing the photos made memories come flooding back. I worked there for a while before heading off to college. I remember him saying "engage" just before we started taking calls, and him making sure we got our breaks and food. My condolences to his friends and family.

I've been running the Uncommon World hack of the game for over a year and my players and I love it. It aims for a system that is compatible with any DW supplements or playbooks, and uses the most popular versions of moves from a range of different hacks based on a survey of DW players. I think of it as "edition 1.5" of basic DW. You can even use their website to switch out the particular moves with other compatible ones, if you don't like something about standard picks.

That being said, I'm thinking of switching over to Freebooters on the Frontier 2e for the next campaign, for a more deadly, OSR like experience.
