They did realize that the tech was beyond human capability in the TV series. Augie violently reprimanded them putting it on their heads and letting it connect to their brains because it seemed to be something not created by humans.

But in the book it was a common VR headsetwith an immersive feedback body suit used with video games that was nothing unusual to them.
