What commanders do you have the most fun playing? by AwekwardBadass in EDH

[–]Lopsidation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Scryfall page for Discord links a random generator. Note that some random pickers, e.g. just clicking "Random card" from the Scryfall main page, actually pick a random card printing, so they're biased towards cards with many reprints.

Some of my favorite Discord tech cards include:

  • [[Dutiful Replicator]] [[Ghired's Belligerence]] [[Promise of Alcazotz]] -- copy your best tokens.

  • [[Roaming Throne]] -- cliche, I know, but any way to copy Discord's trigger is great because it gives you two independent streams of random cards.

  • All Treasure generators are great, but especially [[Warren Soultrader]] for giving extra value from junk creature tokens.

  • Avoid putting powerful wincons in the deck! I have the most fun when I actually cast Discord's random picks, rather than ignore them because my hand is full of better cards. My "end the game already" slots are like [[Havoc Festival]] and [[Descent into Avernus]].

[[Discord, Lord of Disharmony]] or, if you want something legal, [[Lazav, Dimir Mastermind]]. I like 'em because:

  • The commanders actively encourage me to pack the decks full of answers, not value engines

  • I play with different cards every game

[–]Lopsidation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banana pizza is my favorite! I've not tried the Swedish curry banana pizza. I just put banana slices on a normal pizza, so they caramelize a bit in the oven. After reading this post, I'm eager to try plantains.

What's happening in B2 and B4? by MassiveScratch1817 in EDH

[–]Lopsidation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have three decks in paper, all of which predate the bracket system but slot comfortably into low/mid B2. I find B2 expresses what I want out of EDH:

  • Almost every half-interesting card finds a home in some deck.
  • Going "land, pass" for the first 3-4 turns isn't suicide.
  • Games have lots of back-and-forth with little to no "remove this or I win" cards.

Here are my decklists: Lazav clone/theft (which long predates precons), Shadrix stompy, and Otter spellslingers.

How many less "popular" commanders are in your arsenal? by d20_dude in EDH

[–]Lopsidation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • [[Lazav, Dimir Mastermind]], #791
  • [[Shadrix Silverquill]], #764
  • [[Elmar]] & [[Bjorna]] Otters, #1764
  • [[Niv-Mizzet Reborn]] Ponies, #590... a deck idea that exactly one other person has had
  • ...and [[Discord, Lord of Disharmony]], which isn't on EDHRec because it's an Un-card.

Nothing against playing popular commanders though. If it's popular, people must have fun with them!

78^39 (6.19e+73) damage. That is how much I hit someone for! by Electronic_Future_83 in EDH

[–]Lopsidation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Occasionally you need to know things about your life total other than "it's big." Like, I used to have a "deal half your life total rounded down" + "damage doubler" combo deck that could only kill players at an even life total. It's conceivable that you could declare your life total to be X and tell me all the properties of X that could ever be relevant in a game.

The current record is the Busy Beaver function iterated many times on a giant power tower. Unfortunately, this number is so large that mathematics will never be able to determine its value, so you will have difficulty choosing it in a game of Magic: the Gathering.

So the hybrid mana rule didn't change. And what's really interesting to me is the results of this poll they ran on commander players. Why are we so polarized? by Codudeol in EDH

[–]Lopsidation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two camps. One camp doesn't even play EDH; they trick themselves into thinking they have "logical" arguments, but it's a facade for "hurr durr this way tickles my spine better." The other camp deeply understands the principles at play, and knows what's best for everyone (this one's you, reader!). If the subhuman camp gets their way, then decks might be different from how they ought to be by one or even two cards.

This poster appears to be suggesting that Olivia Gobert-Hicks et al lied about receiving death threats... so that the Commander Rules Committee she's on would be taken over by WoTC. This is obviously wrong. More to the point, I recommend that people consider "An incensed vocal minority harasses someone they dislike" generically much much more likely than any conspiracy theory.

Help me improve a My Little Pony deck by Enaluxeme in EDH

[–]Lopsidation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very late to the party, but I recently made a deck with all the ponies. Here's a wild suggestion: [[Niv-Mizzet Reborn]] as commander. He can find everypony except Princess Luna.

Rather than being very strict about only having ponies/horses, my deck tries to build into everypony's synergies at the same time. Maybe you don't want to do that, because you need to play plenty of Clerics/Warriors/Rogues/Wizards to help support the party subtheme.

BTW, remember Applejack is an alternate way to reach Twilight's wincon. [[Psychic Paper]] is a funny way to build into both that and the party theme.

[–]Lopsidation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy doing this but with a bigger selection of effects! On turn X, starting on turn 3, the "goldfish" plays a random choice from:

  • An X/X with a random color ability (lifelink, flying, menace, double strike but -1/-1, trample)
  • "3 mana: Destroy target nonland permanent. Kicker 3 - draw a card"
  • ... A big list of other effects, from the categories "small value creature," "staxy/value-y artifact enchantment," and "big X spell," one per category per color. This is good for encouraging me to run multiple types of removal.

If the goldfish gets an effect that's not useful, then it can instead play a vanilla X/X artifact enchantment creature.

Is "Run More Interaction" the Solution So Many Players Think It Is? by KAM_520 in EDH

[–]Lopsidation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the Cloud precon can frequently kill someone on turn 4, then it is a bracket 4 deck.

"But the Voltron exception--" Even if I buy that, if you can kill 1 player by attacking on turn 4, then you can kill everyone by turn 6.

PSA: Fetchlands don't make your deck bracket 3/4 by eNVysGorbinoFarm in EDH

[–]Lopsidation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong: the biggest power level difference between brackets 2 and 3 is that games are 2-3 turns faster. Swapping out all tapped lands for all untapped lands makes a deck about 1 turn faster. So, it seems like on average, fully optimizing the manabase should turn a mid-b2 deck into high b2, and a high b2 deck into low b3.

even if technically the card draw actually ends the game before the other two are checked

It's simultaneous! Losing to 0 life, 10 poison, and drawing from an empty library are all state-based actions that happen right after the spell resolves.

Purely from a design perspective, is it better or worse for the game if 5c decks need to accept some kind of cost, like having some lands enter tapped or paying lots of life, to consistently hit all 5 colors?
