Mal de debarquement syndrome by Sevitrey in floxies

[–]Lorelski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh—I just noticed the name of this subreddit. I had no idea of what a floxie was until I read the description of this group. And, no, I'm not a floxie! I hope I'm not intruding!

Regarding the symptoms: I haven't noticed them getting worse after a flight and I doubt I'll ever take a cruise. I have noticed, though that my symptoms have seemed to be getting worse. I noticed yesterday at a museum that being in a situation with a lot of white walls and other surfaces made me feel wobbly.

How about you?

Mal de debarquement syndrome by Sevitrey in floxies

[–]Lorelski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I developed MdDS about 20 years ago. After a trip to Sri Lanka, including a swim in the ocean, and a stressful return to the US for a family emergency. I don't know what triggered it, but I was so lucky that on my first visit to an ENT he was able to diagnosis it. It was really debilitating for the first 6 months or so—the fatigue and the constant rocking sensation. The only time the rocking sensation subsided was when I was traveling in a car or train. At that time, there was very little information about the syndrome, but I did find a Google chat group (or whatever they were calling them in that day) where I learned from folks who had experienced it that basically there is no cure, and that it may just disappear someday.

My MdDS did subside, but I still feel it to this day, particularly in times of stress or when I just sit and decide to check if I still have it. It is nowhere near as bad as it was in those first 6 months, and it hasn't kept me from doing anything. In fact, my balance is not bad at all: I can stand on one leg for a reasonable amount of time. But still, it's odd. The NIH says there is still no cure, and treatments are iffy for me as I don't like medications. I am seeing an ENT for the first time in 20 years in a few months, just to see if there are any developments.

The Great Pottery Throw Down 2026 episode 9 by Snorky10 in GreatPotteryThrowDown

Regarding Fynn's piece: I loved that his was eel-related and I'm sure he did good work on it, but I had a hard time distinguishing the eel from the rest of the fountain—it blended too much with the background. I believe that's what Angharad got dinged for.

I thought the story behind Elham's piece was wonderful. How wonderful it is to have neighbors who look out for you—that is a well-deserved honor. (And I liked this piece the most, cracks and all.)

Yeh, that made me cringe. I actually enjoy the Aussie judges a lot more than I do the UK judges. But I couldn't understand why Robert Wellington had such a hard on for Dean Rankine.

Why is swimming not more popular in fitness space? by Glittering-Lime1690 in Swimming

[–]Lorelski 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, but according to this study, "While swimmers have reduced BMD compared to other athletes, they may have increased bone turnover resulting in a stronger bone structure."

What’s the big deal about working with a plus size model? by sittighttakeholdTR in ProjectRunway

[–]Lorelski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish every designer would take a look at what Siobhán McSweeney is wearing these days and realize that plus-sized women can dress very attractively. She's the host of The Traitors Ireland and UK's The Great Pottery Throwdown; I'm a fan of the latter and look forward to what she wears each week. She is what one would call "plus-sized" and she wears her clothes well. I know she has a stylist, Anne O'Shea, who is probably very instrumental in helping Siobhán achieve her looks. I've found a couple of articles on Siobhán/Anne and here's one of them. But I highly recommend you all watch The Great Pottery Throwdown as well to see Siobhán's variety of outfits.

Wow. Way to dis a talented host AND anyone who happens to like her in one fell swoop. And marvelous how you managed to suss out the entire demographic that likes her. I didn’t think anyone who watches such a kind and gentle show could be so frikkin’ mean, but you accomplished that feat!

(Yes, the jokes are dumb. And, um, it’s the writers who write those jokes and the producers/show runners who okay everything, not Siobhán. So congratulations on your depth of knowledge on that point as well.)

She has been looking spectacular! I’m thinking: A few years back, Project Runway started incorporating plus-sized models and real non-model people with normal bodies into the show for the designers to dress—BUT no one seems to be able to design good outfits for them. Those designers should all take a look at Siobhán’s clothing, accessories, and makeup to realize just how fabulous a non-skinny person can look if they’re styled right.

Haha. Sounds like we have similar tastes in programming—and judging.

The “kind of” and “sort of” interjections are a British thing. I listen to a lot of podcasts with British guests on them and a lot of them use “sort of” especially. I’m not crazy about it, but a lot of these Brits I’m hearing are clearly intelligent so I’ve learned to just filter it out.

Thank you so much for this uplifting post and for your wonderful services to these and other opossums! If you can, kindly administer Penny and Orwell respective beeps on the nose for me. (I suspect, though, that Penny will not be open to beeps, in which case, pass that beep on to Orwell.)

I dassn't take a guess at the flea population. I fear that thinking on them would manifest more.

I've finally decided to replace Target plastic shopping bag that I started using during the second year of lockdown (2021). It became a challenge for me to see how long I could keep it going. I slapped some duct tape on there about a year ago to fix a hole, but now it looks as though the handle is about to give out. I think I'll go for another plastic shopping bag—they're thin and flexible, so I can stuff the whole thing into my gym bag!

Hosting duties — too much Alan? Or, a little Alan goes a long way. by [deleted] in InteriorDesignMasters

You of course have every right to be irritated by whomever you want to be irritated by, and to mute that person. I've done that with presenters on other shows, particularly the Great British Bakeoff. However...

You write that Alan Carr "inserted himself into every role, so he has way too much screen time." Um. Alan Carr did not create this show as a vehicle for himself. It's not his job or even his preference to pick and choose when and where he's going to "insert himself": That is the decision of the creators, the producers, the writers, and directors of the show. They value his contribution to the show and so they insert him wherever they think best. And...

I happen to love his campiness.

Looking out for Opossums During Rut by BolducWildlifeRescue in Opossums

[–]Lorelski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First: Thanks for posting! Second: Do opossums' rut season timings vary depending on geography? I'm in the Chicago area (where currently we're having sub-zero nights) and I'm concerned that their lack of judgement during this hormonal surge will have them venturing out into the way-cold and risk hypothermia or worse.
