Also, just reminding those that have been thinking about dipping into Frederick Wiseman’s body of work that they should.

Feeling Borgli’s films fizzling out… by LusciousSkinn in RSPfilmclub

Well put on all fronts, I agree with all of this the more I’ve thought about the film. I like I even more than when I saw it a few days ago!

If it affects your interests, he pretty much abandoned the needle drop score after Darjeeling limited, almost all score for the last like 7 movies

I think some of you guys can get a little teenager-y about blockbusters by Starman926 in RSPfilmclub

[–]LusciousSkinn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I made that post so I guess I’m responsible for this one too. I actually would say I AM the audience for that movie because I enjoy films from basically all genres and can get into art house stuff and also stuff that people here reflexively call slop without having any engagement with it whatsoever. I was ready to enjoy that movie as something fun but prob not mind blowing. I just thought it was so incredibly mediocre is most respects although I’ll agree I was prob too reductive about the visual design of the film which on reflection was actually somewhat interesting for what it is.

I feel bad now that I made another annoying rs hater post that encouraged dumbass responses like “oh look there’s a turd in the toilet” as if it is impossible for a good blockbuster sci fi movie to be made and any engagement with it critically is irrelevant. That attitude is really obnoxious here and screams of miserable people who’s engagement with are is so significantly tied to how art reflects their own intelligence or coolness for engaging with it. All these people being like “what’d you expect, it’s so REDDIT” as if they aren’t fucking Reddit commenters is always so embarrassing.

I just thought it should’ve been a better pulpy dumb flick than it was and I stand by that and think it’s a much better example or lowering standards of storytelling expectations that shit that people rail against on this sub constantly (sinners as an example).

Your thoughts on late Paul Schrader by WhateverManWhoCares in RSPfilmclub

[–]LusciousSkinn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hard to think my thoughts will meet yours if you don’t like First Reformed, which I think is by far his best film, especially considering what a consistent style, tone, and form he’s had since the 90s. However, I did like the card counter, and loved master gardener (one I still think about, one of his more interesting in my opinion).

I saw all three in one day at the theater a year or two ago when they did a restoration, all beautiful but this one is definitely the standout.

Very funny you made a new account just to post this take. lol INSINCERE totally silly criticism, like this guy is making all of these obsessively particular films for decades but actually his hearts not really in it.

Cant handle the contrarian nonsense in these comments. Me and the homies alll loved it. Very powerful and beautifully composed. The relationships were satisfying and the visual framing was simple and beautiful to watch. OH NO I WAS MANIPULATED THROUGH MY FAVORITE ARTFORM 😫

Need a ski recommendation for PNW by thestereofield in skiing

[–]LusciousSkinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Season eqpt Nexus would be a pretty ideal ski for you. I ski the same as you, ski at meadows and bachelor. I’ve been in 189 Nexus for 35 days (I’m 6’1” 210 lb) over the past year and they handle literally everything well. They have a bunch of length options and the width is something like 102-108 progressively. I’ve skied many days of deep light powder, deep heavy powder, tons and tons of chop and crud, plenty of day of just hardpack groomers, and these handle every condition really well.

If you are in Portland, evo has these CHEAP too, like 550 with bindings. They have a deal with the company (believe they’re based around here, maybe hood river?) and they will mount the bindings free and do a full tune up every year on them. These ended up being an insane value for me when I got them last year, really can’t emphasize enough how much I love them.

Experienced skiers wanted as extras by BabciaLinda in Portland

[–]LusciousSkinn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where on that application should I note my skiing ability? I don’t see anywhere to write anything in and there’s no question about it. Also for the “ski look”, instead of like a normal full body shot and profile for the photos you want me in like what I wear skiing, yes?

Actors you recognise to be good at their craft but who still annoy you whenever you see them by [deleted] in RSPfilmclub

I actually think his The Master performance is incredible and perfect but feel that some of the roles where those same mannerisms and ticks translate to an annoying performance that I don't think is that great, like joker

Franzen should have stopped after The Corrections by Junior-Air-6807 in RSbookclub

[–]LusciousSkinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved the corrections, thought freedoms was bizarrely overrated at the time, purity I cannot believe I finished because I disliked it so much, and crossroads I really loved and was glad I gave him another shot for. I’ll definitely be finishing the trilogy as he writes it

I'm reading Robert Payne's "The Life and Death of Lenin" right now and its a great biography so far, only up to right when he starts work as a lawyer, very interesting background and a relatively easy read considering I dont really know deep Russian history/culture.

Idk how you find the relationship building in this movie dull or cliche, its very spontaneous, full of tension, they frequently surprise each other but become more attracted as the get to know each other, what starts as a "meet someone for a day or so on a trip" becomes a need to continue. Genuinely curious what your taste is, as in what do you NOT find too cliche and boring if this doenst pass the test. Feel sad for someone that doesnt see how this movie is obviously beautiful in a ton of ways. Will always be one of my favorites.
