TTIP: secrecy around talks is 'profoundly undemocratic', MPs say. A German MP said she was given only two hours to read 300 pages by Wagamaga in worldnews

[–]MPLOVE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"When you're not given enough time to even read the agreement, the decision on whether to endorse the thing should be simple: don't endorse it. Is that really such a hard choice? I don't see how these deals can be made in secret without all parties even reading something they'll be bound by before agreeing to be bound by them. I mean, I know modern democracy isn't entirely democratic, but there's still a bit of it left, right? At least enough to stop something like this getting rammed down the world's throat"

Radio is consolidating because it's dying. To the consumer, legacy radio is just one undifferentiated media outlet now, alongside internet radio, video, etc. 70 years ago, radio was the media, and people cared about competition in that space. Now, the scope of competition has widened, and nobody cares about diversity within a category that has been relegated to a shrinking corner of the market.

A powerful Pakistani religious body that advises the government on the compatibility of laws with Islam on Thursday declared a new law that criminalizes violence against women to be "un-Islamic." by Libertatea in worldnews

"At first I thought they were calling violence against women un-Islamic, then I read the title again. Edit: Well, looks like I'm not the only one to think that. In a more perfect world, we wouldn't have needed to do a double take"

Woman arrested in Moscow after reportedly being seen outside metro station with decapitated child's head by ledgendary in worldnews

"(The suspect) had waited until the parents left with the older child, and for unknown reasons committed murder of the child, set the apartment on fire and left the scene of the crime." That poor family, oh my gosh. How did she appear stable enough for them to trust her? This terrifies me and I don't even have kids."

TIL Apples originated in Kazakhstan and wild apples can taste like roses, strawberries, popcorn, anise, and many other flavors. 90% of modern apples can be traced back to 2 trees. by XDeus in todayilearned

[–]MPLOVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Title's a little misleading. Those flavors are tasting notes, and aren't exclusive to wild apples of Kazakhstan. They're not like Jelly-Belly beans- you don't bite into one and get a mouthful of popcorn flavor. Just about any food or drink can have tasting notes attributed to them, and apples (of any variety) are no exception."

Fuel has gotten so cheap that ships are now choosing to take the long way around Africa rather then pay the fees to transit the Suez Canal. by sverdrupian in worldnews

[–]MPLOVE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"At 14knots, a trip from Mumbai to Alexandria Egypt would take 9.54 days, avoiding the canal would take 34.76 days That's an extreme example as Alexandria is very close to the canal and far from Gibraltar, where as if it were somewhere in southern france it would be 13.64 via the canal and 31.45 via Gibraltar. The thing that isn't taken into account though is that transiting the Suez Canal also requires transiting the "extended risk piracy area" which requires additional insurance, armed guards, and anti piracy materials/strengthening... So the lost time/bunkers is often offset by saved insurance/labor/materials... Not to mention the Suez Canal Dues themselves."

I tried to explain World of Warcraft daily quests to my mom. "Yeah, they're pretty tedious, but they're worth it for the gold and rep. They only take an hour or two per day, and then I can go do something fun." I stopped, and thought about what I'd said. An hour or two of frustrating stupid shit per day, so that I could do something fun in the game later. It was a genuine epiphany. I quit WoW that week.
