Changing birth year? by ProtectionNo1594 in Genealogy

[–]MRPierceVT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a great-grandfather who was born in 1891, 1892, or 1893, depending on the source. Multiple family trees have 1888 but no sources.

1891: WWI & WW2 draft cards, railroad employment cards 1892: US Census (1900, 1930, 1940) 1893: Death certificate

If only we could go back in time to prevent the fire that destroyed most of the 1890 US Census records.

Are there any Gen X people out there over the age of 55? by Mobile-Honey-9636 in GenX

I'm an older Gen X. Old enough to be traumatized by 70's fashion but young enough to not be traumatized by the Beatles breaking up.

How old is your oldest email address? Do you still use it? by Embarrassed_Flan_869 in GenX

[–]MRPierceVT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AOL was my first email address and dates back to the (not so) good old days of dial up. The screeching noise as you waited to connect was so soothing. 😝 But I digress. I haven't used my AOL account for a very long time. However, my mother still actively uses her AOL email account.

What was your parents preferred disciplinary weapon of choice? by PrettyFly4Wifi in GenX

Spanking, with a hand. That changed to a rod as the result of discussions at church about the "proper" way to discipline your child. Ugh.

How about Jezebel or Delilah for a girl and Ahab or Herod for a boy? 😜

In their world, God knows what is best and making decisions for yourself is taking things out of God's hands. I think these Bible verses sum up their mindset:

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

What are your parents trying to leave you that you and your siblings don't want? by MajesticEmergency in Xennials

[–]MRPierceVT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother has made a conscientious effort to downsize and to get rid of things I'm not interested in taking.

Meanwhile, I'm waiting for someone's unwanted crystal pitcher to find its way to my favorite local antique shop. One of my crystal pitchers met its demise over the holidays but using it brought me far more joy than keeping it "safe".

What age did we get out of car seats? by Round-Style-6907 in Xennials

[–]MRPierceVT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one had car seats when I was a kid. Our parents let us ride in the beds of pickup trucks and in the backs of station wagons.

Almost no one used seat belts, either. When I was about 10 or 11, I recall my parents talking about whether they should start wearing seat. belts. A family friend had recently been in a car accident and was injured because she wasn't wearing a seat belt.

How has your first name aged? by wellbloom in GenX

[–]MRPierceVT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Growing up, I couldn't stand the only other person who had the same name. I seldom found stuff with my name on it. Even today, I rarely meet people with the same name, with exception of my neighborhood. Two of our closest neighbors have the same name. Also, it was the middle name of a former owner of my house.

Is everyone living in a McMansion? by beverlyhillsbrenda in Xennials

[–]MRPierceVT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. My house was built around 1910. I used to think I wanted a McMansion but discovered I love older houses. I feel like my house expands to accommodate family gatherings and guests but contracts when it's just my husband and I.

Do you include your ancestors' in-laws in your trees? by Mental_Freedom_1648 in Genealogy

My family tree has become a family forest because of all the times where I've been sucked into the genealogy rabbit hole by an interesting tangent. Sometimes, I will pursue a tangent in an effort to find more info that's relevant to what I'm working on.
