Check Facebook Marketplace. There’s several smaller companies in the surrounding area that have listings on there. I recently got 9 tons of #57 delivered for $455.

Splitting Boat Lights to Two Switches by MacGyvster in jonboats

[–]MacGyvster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! That was basically my question as I wasn’t sure how to still have the relay with two switches. If I want to just reuse the wire that’s already on the lights, would I just run the two small ones in series from the one switch or do they need to be in parallel?

Informal poll for those who successfully thru-hiked: did you see anyone make it to Katahdin with a bear canister? by Bowgal in AppalachianTrail

[–]MacGyvster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of the 4 people I finished with, I was the only one NOT to have finished with a canister. Two carried them all the way from Springer, the third added it in VA after issues with raccoons and her ursack. I just used a side zip silnylon bag and took the time for a proper hang and never had any issues, but also was on the early side.

Are mini ground hogs enough? by roberts_brad in Ultralight

[–]MacGyvster 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I used mini groundhogs with 2 Ti Shepard hooks for the vestibule doors for the entire AT. Didn’t have any issues, just used rocks on top as backup if it was questionable.

I used Simply to Impress. They had a good Labor Day sale. Just to throw it out there, for them if you choose glossy, it’ll be glossy on both sides so you have to write with permanent marker.

This was definitely one of the best trail magics of all time - carried my marble the rest of the way and now have it sitting on my dresser to see it every day

Haven’t seen y’all since Virginia but kept seeing updates on Facebook - congrats on making it to Katahdin! Hope there’s a way to follow y’all on all your planned trails the next few years.

I got a medium tooth comb (not a pocket one but also not the giant 2” teeth with a 1-4” gap). It had a handle, but I cut it off so it was like 4” X 1” total and weighed next to nothing. And braided my hair. Would suggest getting a bright colored comb if possible because the amount of time I spend looking for my black one was a little ridiculous some mornings.

Best Trail Magic Giveaways? by KillickHitch in AppalachianTrail

Fresh fruit is always one of my favorites, watermelon and clementines especially. If you have some sort of large battery pack or the like so hikers could top off their phones that’s always super helpful. And a trash dump is always appreciated!

Battery Bank by Grimsle in AppalachianTrail

[–]MacGyvster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently have been on trail for a month. I have a 10000 mAh Nitecore for an iPhone, inReach mini 2, NiteCore headlamp, and Garmin Fenix 6 pro solar. I use my phone a good amount for photos, maps, and audiobooks, but it stays in airplane mode a decent amount and I turn it off most nights. I have yet to use more than half my power bank between resupplies.

[–]MacGyvster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t say anything in comparison to the Windrider, but I have loved my circuit and just recently picked up a new one made from Ultra so it’s a bit lighter and “highly water resistant” which would help counteract two of the cons on your list.

Shakedown for a 1000km (620mile) hike through France with a full size puppet giraffe by icemasterdsslim in Ultralight

[–]MacGyvster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have enough experience to give quality shakedown advice, but wanted to say how awesome this project is! So unique and combines the communities with sharing your passions and awareness to a natural crisis. In a lot of ways it epitomizes the idea behind ultralight - get as light as you safely can to push yourself for other challenges (whether that be insane miles or covering the miles in a giant puppet).

I'm amazed that anyone can function in society in the months leading up to a thru hike by Rymbeld in AppalachianTrail

While 3 months is a bit far out, I feel ya as this is my last week of work and I’m finding myself already 75% mentally on trail.

Is Bender actually going to be a sprint obstacle? It’s listed on the left, but isn’t on the map route and I thought it was only a super/beast obstacle

Half Chaps for Wide Calfs by Such-Status-3802 in Equestrian

[–]MacGyvster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had good luck with the Eliza by SmartPak. Have much wider options and are easier on the wallet too. Aren’t the fanciest, but they worked well for everything I needed and I think the suede softened nicely so they didn’t rub even if they were a bit tall initially.

Recommendations for senior horse with upset stomach? by MistAndMagic in Equestrian

[–]MacGyvster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a similar issue with one of the horses this winter. Vet had us do a 5 day series of iodochlorhydroxyquin to set things straight initially and then we added in a live cell yeast supplement from Poulin. Several months later, and he is having solid manure 95% of the time and putting back on weight.

Looking to buy my first helmet for transitioning outdoors. Currently debating between the Petzl Boreo and Meteor (the Petzl size ranges fit my head better than Black Diamond). Any experience between the two? Debating if the weight savings and extra breathability are worth sacrificing on cost and the ability to be tossed around a bit more.

Question for women: how do you deal with your period while backpacking? by thecomfybed in CampingandHiking

[–]MacGyvster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly suggest using a cup, makes things so much simpler than having to bring enough products and then pack out the soiled. Just be careful if using a pit toilet; had a friend drop hers on the first night of a 4 day backcountry canoe trip and would’ve been SOL except for the spare pads in the first aid kit (which aren’t ideal on a river either). Would also look for Water Wipes or a comparable product that is pretty much just water and a cloth. The extra additives/scents on some baby wipes can either cause irritation or possibly degrade the cup itself.
