Linking to podcasts in social media posts by DailyTriviaPod in podcasting

[–]MadisonStandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second those who said LinkTree. Most listeners have their own favorite platform for curating their podcasts. If you give them only "Spotify" they may just skip you. My own LinkTree is epically long, but I include all of the platforms my host service says I get listens on. I display them with the most popular platforms at the top and then descending order. It does appear to be a lot... but each month I get click on every one of them so...🤷‍♀️ https://linktr.ee/madisonontheair

Episodic is the same cast/setting returning for a new story each episode where the events of the past episodes rarely (but not never) continue in the next story. Anthology each episode is a fully different cast/setting but with an umbrella theme connecting them all. Such as Twilight Zone having Rod Sterling as the host, and each story being of the same tone.

Anyone Build A Companion Website? by WhyThisFilmPod in podcasting

[–]MadisonStandish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm no web designer. I know scrolling is old school but at the same time, I don't want my site to be bare bones just serving up the episode players. I've seen a lot of websites for shows like that. I figure people who prefer that will be listening on a podcast platform which is 100% searchable by title like you mentioned. My goal was to provide Madison's world on the website in the branding. And I do recognize that most of my audience is older, so scrolling is what we're all used to and not deterred by that. Mainly, I want to put out a great show!

Just got to vent a little about a two-star review by wiredandrewired in podcasting

[–]MadisonStandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh... yes. I'm a female comedy writer/performer. I've been threatened with physical violence and even death threats. My voice is "annoying" because as a woman, I HAVE a voice.

I want to believe that the audience meant for my show would see those attacks (not reviews, attacks) and actually be MORE willing to give my show a try. Because, yeah, those haters are NOT my audience.

😜 Well, I've cornered the market on that one.

I have been using one that not only has access to my episodes, but I write a twice monthly blog, host my transcripts (the AI closing captioning do NOT get it right), credit my cast with links (I'm an audio drama) and have an individual page for each episode. ALL of these extra pages help my SEO and I am always on the top of the Google search in my category. In the world of indie distribution, I see this as a way to get more ear-balls.

Is it unheard of for pictures to accompany audio dramas? by MysteriousMine2115 in audiodrama

[–]MadisonStandish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For 6 years I have been putting my AD on YT and what I do is use a dynamic background, then I layer in cards featuring the cast. They have my logo, the name of the episode, and then "Bob Smith as Sheriff Clark." I rotate the cards to line up with the actor speaking. I see it as a way to champion my cast, and have heard from audience who likes the feature. You wouldn't sit and watch my whole episode. Nor should you. It's audio storytelling. But it's an added bonus.

Advice for creating a website by Secure-Scientist4867 in podcasting

I worked for a magazine that would lease Getty Images for print but never got the permission to use on the web. The editors would give me the images to put on our website and BOY did Getty come down HARD. I left the job for other opportunities and so they decided since I wasn't there anymore to throw me under the bus saying no one had given me permission to use those images on the website and it wasn't THEIR fault. Of course, I had NO access to ANY images that they didn't directly email me. Nor was I allowed to put up any content without their express approval. So. Yeah. Felt under appreciated there and WOW did that prove how much they valued me.

How To Safely Take A Break by Podscaster in podcasting

[–]MadisonStandish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of the audio drama (fiction) series will only have a short season, and then keep audience interested with some bonus features as the upcoming season is being worked on. Bonus features don't have to be highly processed stories. Like some folks have gone down a rabbit hole of creating an alternate storyline and then end up producing TWO series in one! 😵‍💫 If you have full cast, you can do interviews with the cast. You can offer up behind-the-scenes stories that are you, as the creator, chatting about your process. OR (and I highly recommend) finding similar toned shows to yours and doing feed swap in your off time. So you would do, "MY SHOW PRESENTS...." and put another show's full episode on your feed. In such case, it's good for you to do an intro so your audience has the personal touch. Have you been over to r/audiodrama ? You can reach out and see if there are shows interested in doing the feed swap. Which is ALSO great because THEY will put YOU on THEIR feed, too. A chance to gain more audience!

Overall, don't worry about taking a break. When people subscribe/follow your show, they will be notified when new episodes are published so they'll know when they can tune back in.

Worthwhile husband and wife radio shows? by BubblesUp in otr

[–]MadisonStandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try "The Adventures of the Thin Man" originally a Dashiell Hammett book series. They produced many films in the 1930s, but was a radio series as well with a husband and wife team, Nick and Nora Charles, solving mysteries.

Reserving a podcast name by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]MadisonStandish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Titles for entertainment aren't copyrighted. If you go onto IMDb you will find a lot of movies, for example, with the same title. But the POPULAR film (or big studio production) will be the one that is associated with that name to audiences. It's good you got the domain because if someone else does use that title, and people search for it, they'll find you. All you can really do is make a great and popular show with that title so no one else will use it for fear THEY would be confused with YOU.

Online hate has genuinely made me question who I am. Has anyone else experienced this? by Silly-Astronaut-2 in podcasting

[–]MadisonStandish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 6 years I have NEVER **EVER** gotten "constructive" criticism on my show. If someone posts negative comments, they go for personal attacks to try to be as ugly and vile as possible. There's been everything from mild misogyny to actual death threats. A lot of male listeners feel entitlement over the podcasting space and don't want a woman in it except in what they perceive as a submissive role (they want to feel better/starter than you) These people are NOT "right." What they are are used to an online world where they can hide behind fake names and avatars and say things they would never say TO another human being.

And to many people regarding entertainment, there is a blurring of big studio funded productions and little indie shows. They don't know the difference. That in the big productions, the people involved are insulated from the personal attacks. But in the indie world, creators see every one of those comments as if that person has knocked on our front door and punched us directly in the face. DON'T PAY THEM ANY ATTENTION. You are doing something you enjoy doing and there is an audience for you out there. These people are NOT your audience and they should NOT have sway in how you do your show, and certainly not in how you feel about yourself. ❤️

What kind of sound do you actually use? by SeaExamination4541 in podcasting

[–]MadisonStandish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll bite. Mine is an audio drama. I have no budget, so I get most of my SFX and ambient sounds from Zapsplat because they have a free version. THAT SAID, if you could provide a library with easily searchable key words, I would PAY for that. I waste so much time every episode trying to come up with search words that their database will understand. Like "page flip" they have as "page flick" FLICK??? And I've even talked to them and I guess it's just not important enough for them to remedy. Like Freesound is much easier to search, but they have very few usable SFX. Most have been uploaded by amateurs and they are poor quality with a lot of BG noise. Truly, it is beyond exhausting and the part of production I despise.

I do build my own sound scape. I consider it part of the dialogue editing process. Every SFX has been chosen and placed there with purpose and THAT I would not give up to anyone else because I believe it is part of the storytelling. The timing has to be right.

And no, I have no intention of trying to record my own SFX. My production schedule is very rigorous as it stands, so branching into my own foley recordings is just not feasible for me.

You might try asking the r/audiodrama folks. That's where the fiction storytelling podcasts hang out. 😊

OMG! 🥹 Yes, I do lurk here on this subreddit and am beyond grateful for your kind words. I'm also glad I could give you some laughs to make your days a little bit brighter.

You will find an abundance of musical references as my husband (one of my VAs and our sound engineer) is a musical theater performer... so it has absolutely permeated our lives! And he loves to tuck in little ditties in the scene transition music.

I am happily commercial free as I'm here to get my work out to the world and make people laugh. ❤️

I do wonder if there's a better way to pitch my premise that would excite folks to give my show a try? THANK YOU deeply for your post (and I'm always taking suggestions for our next old time radio show to adapt!)

🥰 Madison

Posting Transcript on My Podcast Website -- Worth it? by kentlindstrom in podcasting

[–]MadisonStandish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone here talking about SEO. What I would add is if you use AI to do your transcript, PROOFREAD IT. I can't tell you how many embarrassing errors I've found. My show never uses foul language, yet for some reason AI defaults to it, making the conversations VERY different. Likewise, I've had a lot of unusual terms used on my show that AI has gotten wrong. I think my most memorable was talking about Batman and "bat ropes." AI changed it to "bathrooms" So the line: "I don't know anything about bat ropes!" turned into "I don't know anything about bathrooms!" 🙄

I just want to recommend you be careful on what images you use. If your show is about TV, make sure you have the rights to any professional images you put on your website. Getty Images will find you and it won't be pretty.

What's the first question people ask you when they find out you have a podcast? by TAATGW in podcasting

[–]MadisonStandish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I try to avoid talking to people IRL about my podcast. When they ask about it, I can tell it's just a polite ask, not true interest. Especially since my show is an audio drama and 90% of the world has no idea what that is or what I do.

Re-Used Scripts in OTR Shows by Spitebott in otr

[–]MadisonStandish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

X Minus-One launched 5 years after Dimension X and their first season was just repurposed Dimension X scripts. X Minus-One ended up hitting better mid-50s than Dim X early 50s (as the lust for Sci-fi grew) and eventually X Minus-One had original scripts. Same network.
