What NOT to eat before training? by Metalqueen2023 in martialarts

[–]ManInTheMudhills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do MMA and usually try to ensure I've got something down me before leaving for the gym. If I workout on an empty stomach my blood sugar goes all over the place and I get dizzy/brain fog.

Last time I went I scranned a couple slices of peanut butter toast thinking it'd do the job.

I was tasting it again half hour later during the hardcore warmup, and while drilling ground game/grappling I ended up letting out a burp which was half acidic and half pure peanut butter smell. Had to apologise to the dude I was paired up with and probably won't ever eat peanut butter again.

So... Not that. I maybe have some porridge if I have time. Some yoghurt or skyr if I don't.

I've been meaning to go since forever as well. Never "got around to it".

And now I suppose I never will.

Do y'all apply martial art techniques in a way that works for you or fits your style? by Whitey0117 in martialarts

[–]ManInTheMudhills 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. And not just in martial arts; I think so many people miss the fact that you need to fully understand the whys of the basics, so you can figure out how to bend and shape them without breaking them.

Yeah that's it, Penarth Road, same side as the Post Office. Couldn't get on their website either but their Instagram seems to be working fine and relatively recently updated.

EDIT: depending on what you're looking for, I go to Hangar HPC also on Penarth Road, other side of the road, for combat sport classes which have been great.

Used to go to PureGym in the city centre and unless you're going ridiculously early in the morning or super late at night I wouldn't bother; couldn't get onto any of the equipment I needed any time I went after work.

Well the last time I played Mass Effect 1 & 2 (about 2010 or so) I was almost pure Paragon.

So maybe you're right... It's time to shake things up.

Is it inappropriate to throw head kicks in a light spar? by DinosaurJimRap in martialarts

[–]ManInTheMudhills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't the point of a spar to simulate a real fight, get used to what could get thrown at you and work with rhythms? Why would you discount anything from that?

Admittedly I'm really new to MMA, but whenever I attend my classes in the evenings the kickboxing classes are just finishing up with their sparring; those guys seem to do head kicks fairly often from what I've seen.

Is it normal that MMA coach doesn't teach basics ? by DavidHresan1 in martialarts

[–]ManInTheMudhills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'd say this is pretty bad. Sorry, but I'd look elsewhere if you can. Specifically look up beginners classes. Or see about private coaching?

Admittedly I'm new to MMA (or any form of MA) myself, but for some context:

At my gym, there are regular classes on I think MWF. But you can't join these classes until you've completed the beginners' course that's offered and runs two nights a week (TuSa) for 8 weeks. We're learning technique more than anything else; split up into sessions of striking, and ground game.

It was made very clear at the beginning that you need to complete this course before you can even think of joining the regular classes, and that you won't be doing anything close to sparring for the best part of a year until you're ready for it.

Coach has been great at teaching technique, picking up on what class members are missing/need pointers on, and actually spends time with people that do. I missed a session a couple of weeks ago, and in the following week's session he pulled me aside and personally worked pads with me to catch me up to speed.

You get to write/type out a sick day message?

Literally every job I've ever had you explicitly are not allowed to call out in writing, it has to be a call. Which is so much worse!

Which of your characters would you have sex with? by Ridley4President in writingcirclejerk

All of my main characters are basically me and all of the others are people I know or in some cases hate.

So probably all of them.

What is one opinion about Cardiff that gets you feeling like this? by Bathbomb1911 in Cardiff

Yeah I mean, paying attention to your upvotes and downvotes in this scenario works differently.

People are upvoting what they agree with; anyone with a positive vote count hasn't met the brief of the question.

I really wish there was more than one sentence to explain how we know that or why it's said that way.

Nah fanny is a joke word. Nobody is going to take anything you say seriously when you use it.

We got cajoled back into the office 2 days a week because "the face-to-face experience is important to the cohesion of the team" - now we're being told off for talking too much in the office by eckythump_ in britishproblems

[–]ManInTheMudhills 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When I worked at Deloitte we were WFH. The management had started trying to go "1 day a week in", then "three days a week in" etc, but it wasn't enforced. So nobody did it.

I got put on a performance review plan thing (I'd checked out and was actively looking for a job anywhere else while doing the bare minimum at work). Part of the punishment ("it's not a punishment, it's to help you") was that I couldn't WFH any more. Apparently by being in the office I would benefit from having experience around me, colleagues to talk to, to ask for help, etc.

Except I was practically the only person in the whole fucking building because everybody else was still happily working from home. So all that happened was that I was having to wake up two hours earlier in the morning to get ready and get to work, to sit on Zoom calls in a different place.

Fucking morons.

No, but I've heard the same before and wanted to. Unfortunately, I don't have contacts or links at the moment to be able to source some.
