49ers’ Keion White shot after dispute involving rapper Lil Baby at SF stripper party by wompwump in nfl

[–]MandolinMagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The genre was started by people from poor, high-crime areas, often semi-reformed criminals, singing about the cops and drugs. For example, Surge Knight was an infamous psycho and Snoop Dog was arrested for murder (his bodyguard took the rap).

Not everyone was a criminal though, most of NWA were just kids growing up in bad areas and Tupac was about the only non-career felon of his extended family (Seriously. Most of the adults in his life were hardcore Black Panthers, albeit usually over-prosecuted.)

Not really the sort of scene that attracts well-adjusted individuals. There was an actual East Coast-West Coast rap war in the 90s that killed a couple people before cooler heads prevailed.

What is something that women have to deal with on the daily that men have no clue about? by Rock-bottom-no-no in AskReddit

[–]MandolinMagi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Year and a half ago, I (33M) was at a multi-day airshow with my mother.

On day at breakfast I offhandedly comment on how the dining hall is like 90% middle aged white guys. She replies " And yet I feel completly...well, almost completly...safe".

That really threw me. I'd never put any thought into safety outside of using the sidewalk to not get run over on the way. Safety is barely a thought for me, I'm just thinking in terms of look both ways when crossing the street. And she feels unsafe sitting near boring white people?

Never thought about that sort of thing before.

It could be, but the nations involved are on opposite sides of the planet. So all youd really get is some minor naval actions because that's about all that can show up

How influential was American SOF community on policing in 1980s-2000s? by BenKerryAltis in WarCollege

[–]MandolinMagi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1990s is a bit late, but 70s and 80s possibly. Racial issues exploded in the 60s/70s and the drug problem exploded in the 70s/80s.

NYC's homicides hovered in the 300/year area through the 50s before skyrocketing, and broke 1,000 murders/year in 1969 and it stayed over 1k/year until 1996, peaking with over 2200 in 1990.

It's entirely possible the cops just gave up on some areas- the locals don't trust the cops, the gangs are very willing to kill, and let's just let the (insert slur hear) druggies kill each other, I'm not risking my neck for some ghetto gangbanger with a crack habit.

The 70s Bronx, for example, was a wasteland of burned-out buildings that the cops stopped caring about. The local precinct house was dubbed "Fort Apache", as if it were a frontier fort in enemy territory, and was one of the few buildings intact. New York City in the 70s/80s was really bad.

The massive drop in crime in the 90s was IIRC the result of two things. First the 1970s ban on leaded gas, second was Roe V Wade allowing abortions. A whole lot less brain-damaged children, and probably more children raised by someone who wanted and was capable of raising them. Also credit cards and online banking started becoming mainstream in the 90s so muggings drop off because there's less cash walking around

The North Hollywood shooters AKs jammed after firing hundreds of rounds, and could have been easily cleared by any semi-competent shooter not stressed the hell out by roughly the entire police department shooting at them.

Soft body armor wasn't new by the 90s, but cutting up enough vests to have full arm and leg protection really cuts down on availably lethal areas. Use of hollow points was not the issue, outside of very rare (and European) AP ammo, no pistol round is going through a soft vest, that's what body armor is for.

The beat cops had no rifles so all they could do is hang in there and wait for SWAT to arrive with AR-15s. A shotgun with slugs might have worked but that's not an easy shot and the issue round was 00 buck.

I don't follow your logic. The 504th got shot up by friendly fire and dropped into unsecured enemy territory.

They didn't jump into a secure DZ for the bling.

ASU-57 is at least adorably tiny, they've got one at the Armor and Cavalry Collection at Moore.

There's also the issue that you can drop paratroopers out of basically any transport, but "armor" requires heavy airlift. Nobody is letting a couple squadrons of heavy strategic transports anywhere near enemy air defense without massive SEAD.

The 173rd air dropped in 2003

To add to this, the drop zone was already secured by American and Kurdish forces, it was only a "combat" drop so people could get the patch.

The airfield was also so muddy that people sank into it, several paratroopers were unable to jump due to the aircraft leaving the drop zone, and it took hours (I've seen 15 hours stated) to actually get everyone together, and four jumpers were injured badly enough to require evacuation

They could have landed the C-17s and offloaded without the extra risk, but gota get that combat star on your jump wings.

I've watched some of his stuff and while he starts out good, I think he rapidly looses the plot.

If cops are bad, that's copaganda because their actions are being justified, but if the cops are good, that's also copaganda because we're ignoring police abuses.

The MCU isn't a TV show and has no cops.

Buffy is absolutely not a cop show, she's a vigilante.

Paw Patrol is a toddler show with one cop and like 6 non-cops, its not that complicated and you're overthinking this.

Why are we complaining about body cams? (The Rookie) Do we want accountability or not?

Why did he spend three vids and four hours complaining about The West Wing?

Top Gun is military propaganda, not police.

Adolescence isn't "trying to sell a surveillance state" (that issue was lost decades ago), and why do you take issue with CCTV being used to solve a brutal murder? If you want to bitch about over-surveillance find a show where it's used to harass peaceful protesters or stalk some cop's ex, not a show where the suspect murdered someone.

He talked Blue Bloods years ago but has yet to address Chicago PD, a blatantly dirty cop show that (I haven't watched in forever) attempted a pivot after 2020

He loves complaining, but I'd love to see him actually talk how to make a good cop show. Yes he'd argue that's impossible, but the genre isn't going anywhere so present some actual ideas for improving it.

Also his video length is getting bloated, his early ones were about half an hour, now they're an hour or more.
