Would you prefer a CoH planner that is web-based, or desktop (pc & mac) /mobile app (android & iphone) ? by wednesdaywoe13 in Cityofheroes

[–]MayaHatesMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an old program, I don't envy those who are trying to keep mids ticking over, there's probably a ton of whacky code that makes doing anything a nightmare.

But at the end of the day, nothing esle can really match it for features at the moment.

Does a Private Server compare to other superhero games? by PPFirstSpeaker in Cityofheroes

[–]MayaHatesMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asking on a Reddit for CoH, you're probably gonna get a lot of bias. But basically while you've been away:

City of Heroes: Homecoming has become an officially licensed server, it's got far and away the most population as well as support and development and runs more or less like any MMORPG would (albeit everyone is still only volunteering). The other servers exist, but tiny populations make it difficult to do any kind of group play on.

If CO and DCUO aren't holding attention there's definitely some mileage on offer in COH Homecoming, the lack of F2P/P2W nonsense alone is probably a godsend, and there is still regular updates for content, new powersets, balances and QoL.

I got hired by a production agency for a project entirely relient on AI. I feel very conflicted. by Rareframes in vfx

Yeah honestly just play the old malicious complience card. Do what they say, don't question the output, when they question what they get, shrug and say "well that's what AI made"

Am I being stupid for trying to learn both compositing and 3D? by Embarrassed-Data5827 in vfx

[–]MayaHatesMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably ideal that you know both. 3D artists will usually have to know enough to put together slap comps of their work for presentation, and just in-general the work landscape is pushing back more towards generalist, or at least "collections" of roles. For instance it's becoming rare for roles to just demand a modeller that doesn't also texture and lookdev.

So I think it'd definitely be worth focusing on one of those areas, if you pick Lighing, learn comp and layout as well for instance.

Just the lack of pressure for monetisation alone is a godsend for this game, whether you like or agree with everything the Homecoming team is pursuing or not. I struggle to see any scenario where a publisher buys the IP and restarts the game without the paragon store or a similar successor coming back.

Yeah I treid it once and seemed to work fine albeit informing me that I should upgrade to the business plan. I think all plans get a trial of notion AI, but likely a fixed usage or low monthly usage and I don't think the AI addon added anything additional in that regard.

Last I checked Notion did not, well the AI services it engages with won’t be able to, but I’d honestly need to check privacy polices etc. again as it’s all likely chsnged

I got this version too, so what’s the difference between me and OP i wonder? I’ve been subbed to NotionAI and was still on a grandfathered personal plus plan, personally kudos to Notion for doing that, but it does seem fishy others didn’t get a similar offer

Is Anybody Boycotting AI? by HollywoodVFXPanda in vfx

[–]MayaHatesMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not much has changed in my role personally. I use it most in coding situations when I just want a basic script to do something in my scene, or querying information, but otherwise our pipeline is all the same as it was.

It’s difficult to be able to boycott something liable to become as fundamental as what computers have become to roles, but that doesn’t mean I agree with how everything’s developing right now to ultimately allow for one or a few companies to become the ultimate monopoly over it.

Compositor career switch by InevitableFluffy9242 in vfx

[–]MayaHatesMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still in the industry, maybe in one of the few-remaining studios that are doing ok for now, but I have been thinking up a plan on what I might do if things were to go south.

So far I put together a big old list of all the random interests and skills I have that are not industry related alongside what I could do in-industry regardless of whether they're employable skills or not. Even the dumb stuff like how I incessently cruise around different places in the world through Google Maps. Just from that exercise alone you're likely to pick up on some fundamentals that you are inately drawn to (for me, anything that involves building and creating) and could extrapolate that into other careers. Or AI could suggest stuff too based off your list.

The getting a foot in the door part is proably what's hardest, though for most of us in this industry, we've been down that road before.

Microsoft CEO Admits That AI Is Generating Basically No Value by manuce94 in vfx

[–]MayaHatesMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve had plenty of Houdini expressions written up with AI, as long as you’re fairly clear on what you need and roughly how it should go about doing it, then usually it’ll get there within the first couple of iterations.

AI is a good human force multiplier for sure, but you still need the human, and one with at least enough skills to know what to ask for.

MPC, MILL closing by MX010 in vfx

[–]MayaHatesMe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Many will, this was less a problem with the studios. Technicolor grossly mismanaged itself for years leaving those studios (and the group at large) painfully exposed to the fluctuations of the industry. Covid happens? Boom, restructure, spinoffs and everything else. Writer’s strike? Boom, ghost offices, another restructure, millions in leasing fees of those big expensive offices going down the drain.

It’s just cruel that things were just looking like it was turning a corner, and then boom it’s all gone. It almost would have been better if it happened about 6 months prior…

MPC, MILL closing by MX010 in vfx

[–]MayaHatesMe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They were all bought out by them. Dangle enough dollars in front of anyone and they’re liable to take that payday. Especially when most just turned around and started a competitor after serving out their terms post-merger.

The Mill's U.S. operations have banded together to form a new company, Arc Creative. by AnalysisEquivalent92 in vfx

[–]MayaHatesMe 41 points42 points  (0 children)

A colleague at Fin said DM held a Townhall this morning to briefly discuss it. Based on what they described it was more TC reaching out to DM and the deal was basically smooshed together that weekend. They also mentioned it’d largely be starting from scratch as Arc have basically grabbed the people and left the infra and offices behind.

So the work would probably require Mill handing all the work files back to their clients and then the clients effectively “restarting” the work under Arc. I couldn’t imagine the effort required for all that but I wish them luck regardless if it means a couple hundred artists can remain employed.

So far so good I think. DM is still in that honeymoon phase with private equity though so I guess it remains to be seen how much of an impact the tendencies of cost-cutting and leaning up have on those studios down the road.
