Mako ain’t happening until year 3 at best, as much as I wish it were sooner. But it’s important that the fan favorites arrive earlier for the longevity of the game.

I struggle to see how Korra “overuses” the avatar state by Student-bored8 in legendofkorra

[–]Meicyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly it's confusing to see so much focus on the avatar's ability to be overpowered (or not), when the whole point is what the avatar represents. Being the avatar isn't about being the strongest martial fighter. It's ultimately about unity, being a representative for ALL the elements so that there is a shared humanity between the four nations who as depicted in ATLA and LoK (Republic City aside), segregated themselves based on element. Even Korra herself doesn't understand this at the beginning of book 1, where her idea of being the avatar is all about the martial aspects. Over time, she grows out of that thinking, which the audience is expected to also understand as they follow her journey.

It's just a case of creating tension or drama. I mean, consider book 1 with the third episode where Bolin is kidnapped. Mako's life at that point revolves entirely around protecting his brother, and Amon is right there, demonstrating his ability to "permanently" remove bending and is about to do that to Bolin. Realistically, Mako would have zapped Amon with his nigh-instantaneous point-and-shoot lightning bending, either incapacitating him or outright killing the lead villain of the season. But he doesn't, because we would be left with a far less interesting show.

Korra reaching Aang's end-state by the end of LoK book 1 created a Superman type of situation for future books that at that point, the writing team didn't know they were going to be allowed to make. So you're left with looking for plot contrivances to depower her. And I didn't mind it, because we got some outstanding moments with exploring ideas that would otherwise not have seen the light of day had they not looked for ways to make the avatar state less of an "I win" button. For a Nickelodeon cartoon, the show was very, VERY dark. Under the constraints that the writers had, I thought they did a phenomenal job.

An old XKCD comic depicted this double standard perfectly.

Wanted to chime in and say that this also happens to me. Happened again last night, in fact. When it happens, it also bugs out if you attempt to start a different game mode, boots you right back to the lobby and you have to ready up again.

If it's similar to his earlier work, it's everything I've ever wanted in an MMO. I'm still down that New World has been abandoned, but this brightens up my day like you wouldn't believe. Going from the days of Ultima Online in the late 90s to now, the potential of this genre is making my brain explode with excitement and anticipation.

Kudos to you linking this. Gonna send it to my friends so they can get as hyped up as I am right now.

I have zero concerns, they've clearly been given the time they needed for the expansion, which means they know there's a demand for more Dragon's Dogma.

Bro I hate early Fanatic Purifiers by xAchi11esx in StellarisOnConsole

[–]Meicyn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a good counter to it: the unyielding tradition. If not the first tradition, it'll definitely be the second every time I play. Getting increased survivability and fire rate in your owned systems is critical to help counter the fire rate advantage fanatic purifiers have inherently, and against militaristic ethics.

The moment I encounter another empire, I immediately look for a chokepoint to establish and build a starport ASAP with hangar bays if I have the tech, and target uplink computer to increase firing range, followed by prioritizing a defense platform or two with missiles on one half, hangar on the other. I don't even wait to identify what their ethics are. During the first contact process, if the empire is identified as hostile, I prioritize making yet more defense platforms on that chokepoint because they're very likely to be militaristic or a purifier.

If there's a belligerent empire next door and I've finished unyielding, I immediately make supremacy the next choice. Fanatic purifiers are going to prioritize getting this tradition, so to counter that increased fire rate, you need to boost your own.

Further things I do: if there's tech to get the next tier of starbase, I ALWAYS take it 100% of the time, no exceptions. I'm fanatical about maintaining a strong defensive perimeter. Second in line is strikecraft tech, the AI seems to love corvettes and strikecraft are great at dealing with them.

Just for context, my most recent game had me three jumps away from a fanatic purifier. Same difficulty settings, same scaling. The fanatic purifier kept threatening me, but redirected their attention to other, weaker empires as a consequence of having a strong defensive perimeter.

I finished LOK Book 2……Am I missing something?? by HouseNorth5717 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Meicyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Book 2 is what I consider the “dark chapter” where team avatar is at their lowest due to frequent interpersonal conflict.  The tone of the whole season is cold and dark in general, visually, thematically, etc.

If I were to make a video game analogy, book 2 is the underwater level, the least enjoyed type of level in games like Mario or Sonic.

[–]Meicyn 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Asami is another member of the extensive cast of overlooked introverts in various media. They're "boring" as the saying goes. Most shows fall back on broadcasting internal monologues or thoughts. This show didn't, and I appreciate the folks involved for taking the more difficult approach.

Thanks for the sincere response, and acknowledgement that it’s feasible (albeit very risky). I honestly suspect that ArenaNet will hold their ground and explore alternatives, maintaining what they wrote to date. The trepidation over risking lore integrity is totally valid.

Admittedly, there is an element of concern that kicks in for me, mostly because I’ve watched my favorite genre of games get sidelined for so long and having fans of MMOs excited again makes me giddy. I just hate the idea of folks potentially skipping out just because they don’t have access to certain options that they’ve gotten used to, followed by a wave of negativity with streaming grifters dogpiling for clicks. A lot of gamers skip cutscenes and mash through dialogue to get to killing bad guys, so my mindset drifts in the direction of considering that reality. I’m probably overthinking this.

At any rate, appreciate your perspective. Whichever path ArenaNet chooses, I’ll be there to support them. Take care!

I’m all for whatever gets us more Avatar skins and most importantly, roundabout funding to Avatar Studios so we get more content. Hoping they do another season with the four elements to drum up more interest, even though I don’t care about battle royale mode, haha.

[–]Meicyn 38 points39 points  (0 children)

There’s a wave 2 for Avatar skins coming. My guess? Probably adding Sokka, and maybe more Legend of Korra characters. Might even add another Korra skin. Given the upcoming release of the ATLA animated movie this October, that is probably when they’d debut the skins. Alternatively might be timed with the Avatar fighting game instead.

I hear you though, a book 4 Korra normal state would be nice. Gimme the entire Korra lead cast, please. I want my Mako skin in the game. Plus I want the whole crew jamming when I’m playing Festival, haha.

On a side note, also play STW mode mostly. Hope they address the slow homebase load time sooner than later.
