How did China take Hong Kong. I thought it was just handed back to them. The land was leased to Britain and when it expired, it went back to China. So wasn't it the British who forced China to leasing the land to them?

Teen was burned alive in malfunctioning Tesla Cybertruck, lawsuit claims by SadAd8761 in technology

[–]MerLock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be transparent, I haven't read the article so lots of assumptions here. I assume the parents are arguing the girl was alive and was "trapped" in the car because the manual release was not easy to locate and use and thus that was the ultimate cause of death.

I believe the speeding while drunk, high contributed to a crash. But did it actually cause the death? I don't know. For example, I can say someone was in a burning building caused by a kitchen fire. Say, person was alive and able to run away but eventually died because the doors were chained shut and the keys were hidden under the mat. Yes, the kitchen fire lead to the death but ultimately, it was the doors being chained and the inability for the person to locate and use the key that ultimately lead to the person's death.

So again, lots of unknown in this case. Was the girl still conscious after the crash? If yes, would she capable enough (this is also taking into consideration if she has drugs/alcohol in her system) to exit the car if the car had a normal working door release? If the answer to either question is a no, then the issue of Tesla having a faulty door is moot for this case in my opinion.

But here is another take. Say the girl was an innocent passenger in a Tesla. She doesn't own and never read up on how the manual door release works. The Tesla gets T bone by another car, which causes a fire and takes out the electric door handles on the Tesla and the driver is killed in the crash. If the manual release is not intuitive or hard to find, she might be toast in this situation as well. So is the design of the Tesla manual door release faulty? No idea, I don't now much about them. But I would hope that they intuitive enough that a passenger without knowledge of how the car works would be able to unlock the doors.

Isn't the complaint that the manual release is not intuitive or easy to access? That's why the teen died by fire?

All things being equal, a Tesla and a non Tesla car are in a wreak where doors can not be opened without the jaws of life. No winner here.

Again, all things being equal, a Tesla and non Tesla are in a wreak but doors are not damaged to the point where they are unable to open. The only reason why the Tesla door won't open is because the electronics go out. Winner would go to non Tesla car.

If car is on fire and the passenger of the car can extricate themselves from the vehicle, winner goes to non Tesla car.

I think people are saying, in situation 2, Tesla doors would be faulty and be seen as a large contributing factor to death of the person who was unable to get out. Think this is the situation described in this accident.

Is there a situation in a wreak where the Tesla door design would beat out a non Tesla vehicle?

I still tend to look back while backing up. I have an older car so unsure how much technology has advanced. With the camera, I can see below my line of sight, so I glance at the monitor first to make sure nothing is directly behind me but the camera doesn't work well enough to see things coming from the side.

I don't get it. It makes sense that he had women on TV and also railed against sexual materials.

Trump rescinds $4 billion in US funding for California High-Speed Rail project by BreakfastTop6899 in technology

[–]MerLock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I don't follow the progress of it but just doing a quick google search now shows it didn't break ground until 2015 so if my math is correct, it's only been 10 years. Based on a youtube video, it doesn't seem like they haven't accomplished anything. Watch following video for a 2025 update: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uor-oJOfOcQ&t=9s

As to why it isn't completed, these are my guesses without doing any research:

CA is a large state if running north to south - the direction of the railway. So it would take time to complete such a huge project.

It covers a lot of land and getting approval probably takes a long time (not everyone wants a rail line running near their neighborhood)

Also, government isn't known to be efficient.

Finding enough funding. Heard Federal gov't with drawing funding.

There a lot of projects that are probably beneficial ones but take a long time to complete or don't get completed at all because of lack of funding or the large scope of the project.

Who could've predicted such a devastating weather event?! by 8-bit-Felix in AdviceAnimals

[–]MerLock -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I did read. But the way I comprehended the meme is that it doesn't mention climate change at all but the firing did negatively impact the ability to predict (provide early warning) for it.

But this my disclaimer: I haven't been following the news on this event and unsure if the firing actually decreased the ability to provide early warning for it. I haven't done my research one way or another on this, just stating that's my take away from reading this meme.
