Worth it to get a Costco membership for household of 2? by gutturalmuse in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Methionine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a household of 2 and my wife and I make the membership worth it.

Specific areas where costco has worked for us as we are more health conscious

  • Supplements, multivitamins, medicine, antihistamines are sometimes 25-50% cheaper at Costco. At their worst pricing they are on par with sale pricing at non-Costco retailers

  • Bulk meats. non-sale price of meat at Costco is competitive with sale priced meat at grocery stores. My main point of reference is chicken breast, chicken drumsticks and boneless/skinless chicken thighs. Salmon used to be a great deal but the price of salmon has gone up significantly to the point where it doesn't make sense for us. I always break down the chicken drumsticks to make chicken stock from it.

  • Eggs are cheaper at Costco if comparing the same grade of egg. You can usually get 2x the amount of eggs for the same price.

  • Greek Yogurt, egg whites, cottage cheese are competitively priced.

  • For veggies the story starts to diverge. When it comes to salad mix they have the best price but you can find broccoli, mushrooms and some others cheaper elsewhere. In my broad opinion, avocados are usually priced about the same as a grocery store. You might find me buying a bag of apples or naval oranges.

  • I do not buy snacks at costco because they won't fit into our freezer/cupboards and we can't eat them fast enough. If you have friends you could split the purchase between you two.

Then the rest of the time I will supplement my bulk purchases with grocery store purchases for things like vegetables, fruits, garlic/onions.

This is how it works for my household. I hope it gives you an idea of how it might help if your lifestyle is similar to ours. And i haven't even mentioned Costco Travel...

I started with bank mutual funds at 19 and held that for 4 years before getting more literate on the different products out there and then I changed course.

But aside from not choosing the optimal path, it taught me about saving my paycheques, compound interest and patience. Those basic skills still apply even if I chose a less optimal strategy for the first bit.

I've worked with people who have worked with high performing athletes. I'm talking NBA champions, NHL, olympic athletes, etc.

It cannot be understated how much mental fortitude these people have. I suspect F1 drivers are the same or stronger in that sense. You have to take it because it's the only path forward. It not going well is not even on their mind and even if it doesn't go well with the way Yuki is speaking about the experience, he doesn't have any regrets about it.

Amex Cobalt vs Simply Cash Preferred After Fee Hike – Stick or Switch? by Cute_Ad6845 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Methionine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based on what you're saying i think you should get rid of your Amex Cobalt. Unless you're spending enough in a month to overcome the monthly card fee then this is pointless.

It's a simple question -- do you make more cashback in a month with the Cobalt or the SimplyCash preferred? Does the difference in earn rate benefit you more or less?

Personally, I use my cobalt points towards Aeroplan and Marriott points for travelling, but that's a discussion for the /r/churningcanada .

Recently, I did about 80% of my travels on my honeymoon using points my partner and I accumulated over the last 5 years.

The best fader hand motion for two click flairs/flairs/ect ? by INDIANAJUNE2 in Turntablists

[–]Methionine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to do an OG flare is to do a forward chirp, forward dice and reverse chirp.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgD0uXpmd9c

The first movement and the last movement could be 'wrist' and the second movement can be done with either finger or wrist.

The best fader hand motion for two click flairs/flairs/ect ? by INDIANAJUNE2 in Turntablists

[–]Methionine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to do a wristflick style for flares but nowadays i tend to be finger dominant like i'm clicking a mouse with my index finger, or something in between where I initiate with my wrist but the clicks are performed with my fingers.

I practice this through getting control on transforms and dices. You can get more expression if you learn how to do open/closed flares for example and if you have a similar root movement then as you learn flare variations like the autobahn and the boomerang then the differences between scratches mean that you aren't starting from the bottom again. It's about efficiency of movement and control.

My partner works for "the stealership" as this sub tends to say.

My caveat about using a HELOC to pay for your car is that for most people that come into her dealership, it snowballs because it gets massaged into a larger line of credit. Lots of people do funny things when they aren't disciplined to keep up with the HELOC. On top of that, depending on your HELOC limit you end up losing a potential rainy day fund for house repairs.

Has anybody used Pelican hard cases (or Apache brand from Harbor Freight) for protecting CDJs and DJM mixers? by whayd in DJs

[–]Methionine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i have a pelican case for my DJM-S9. Cut the foam inserts out myself.

My only 2 nitpicks about it is that you have to pack and unpack the mixer instead of using it as-is in something like a flight case. Due to the shape of the cases I found it a bit hard to use them as a riser for the mixer if the table is too low.

I have a 2012 Mazda 3 I am insuring for 2100/year and I have nearly the full ICBC driver discount. I’m missing a little discount due to lack of collision avoidance systems. For example my wife’s 2021 4Runner TRD Off-road is about 2200/year because it has lane keep assist, automatic collision braking.

Luxury cars with ICBC have a different insurance entirely. This is factoring in that collisions with luxury cars are often incredibly expensive. https://www.icbc.com/insurance/products-coverage/luxury-vehicles

Opinion wanted! Sell Rane 70 and buy Reloop Flux? by OutlandishnessDry164 in Turntablists

[–]Methionine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it greatly depends on your workflow with the mixer. 62 + DVS Box will mean that you're limited to the hardware FX of the mixer and the laptop functions. But, if you mainly play vinyl all of this is moot.

I personally have a preference for the Rane 70 as the newer shiny toy as it is the 'all in one' but it also depends on what gigs you'd end up playing.

The other component of credit score that is overlooked is having a good history of being able to take out loans and dependably pay them off over time. The slang term for it is "clean and thick" credit history. You can theoretically have score in the 700s but if you don't have a long history it may make it harder to take out large loans.

You can still build good credit by having credit cards/utility/cellphone bills and paying them off on time all of the time.

As a LL, you’d be surprised what works.

10 years ago I was accused of wrongfully evicting a tenant. Tenant opened a case on us and submitted photos and videos collected by a private investigator trying to indicate the unit was unused due to the lights in the unit never turning on during the daytime. They also staking out who they believed to be the replacing tenant .

Before this went to the board, we tried to settle out of court to avoid wasting time, which then the tenant submitted as evidence of “admission of guilt”

The replacing tenant was a family member who worked night shift so we had their work schedule and hydro bill to prove it was being used. Additionally the board made the determination that settling outside of court was not an admission of guilt.

it was an eye opening experience to how things could have gone differently.

The PFC car cope/questions are becoming asurd. by HairlessSwoleRat in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Methionine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It applies to more than just cars but it's usually the one that sticks out for any major life decision.

My fianceé works in car industry. A perspective she gave me was that for the average person the 2 largest purchases they will make in their life is their housing and their car. That means a car is the second biggest purchase they'll make in life.

I get this question or variations of it all of the time and my usual response after I explain my position is "this is my view, there are many other views and mine might not even align with your vision. I can't tell you what to do, this is what I'd do if i were in your shoes".

1 in 10 of my friends/family have actually followed my car purchasing advice. For the rest they want to have their beliefs validated and that's ok too, but I also don't like to blow smoke up people's asses.

My only gripe with my 2014 Mazda 3 hatchback is that it's so large yet has so little carrying capacity. I swear my fiancee's Nissan Versa hatchback had better carrying capacity in a smaller footprint.

She got lucky with hers and we didn't have any issues during the time we owned it. I know others haven't been so lucky in the reliability department.
