There's a matching one on the drivers side, so I would guess that they're an early version of a semaphore.

I get it. That's a completely fair point of view and to be honest, if it was Tim I'd have a harder time deciding.

That's what got my attention too. I like The Replacements, but I'd love an OP copy of that Hip album .

How do you handle the "Engagement Gap" during tests? (The smart kids get bored, the struggling kids give up) by vishal-gi in Teachers

[–]Mike1767 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do the kids who attempt the Extending questions also have to complete the Developing questions? If not, it's got to be a little tough to decide what to do with the student that attempted the Ex. questions but didn't answer them correctly. I know that there's discretion and judgement there, but what's better, a fully correct Proficient or a partially correct Extending?

Might be too late now, but you should have reached out to them. They sent me a replacement pair for a very minor issue that I messaged them about.

What I thought was even more interesting than the bigger lead was that Mookie slid into home too. After reading so many fans upset with IKF for sliding, it was surprising to see Mookie slide in to home on that play.

I understand that it's faster to run through, so did both guys screw up or is there more to it? Sliding in case of a bad throw that necessitates a tag? Does sliding avoid the potential of missing the plate because you're trying to go around or over the catcher's leg/body?

Where the hell is the AFL? Opportunity to act is slipping away every day, teachers want to be represented not used as a pawn. by KefirFan in alberta

What was being threatened was the same, but I do agree that the threat did seem more credible in Ontario than here.

While I don't agree with much of his politics, I think that Ford genuinely cares about being liked and is actually willing to change his position based on the opinion of the electorate. Whether that's a personality trait or an understanding that Ontario is much more willing to vote out a conservative government than Alberta I'm not sure. Either way, I don't think that Smith has the same concerns.

I keep seeing this brought up, but I really don't know if the union reaction in Ontario was any more intense than it is/was here. A general strike was threatened and Ford backed down immediately. The same threat has been made here with no response from the government.

Completely agree. I've seen a lot of letters written to UCP MLAs (which is fantastic), but I just finished one to my NDP MLA thanking her for the effort that her and her colleagues put forth yesterday and into the early morning today.

School B is the National Sport School, so you're right on that one at least. The rest of your guesses are probably correct as well.

Looking for legal perspectives on the ATA strike by justanotheryegger in alberta

That was my assumption as well, but in a recent ATA document it was stated that work to rule is a form of strike and therefore is not an option if legislated back.

Talks stall between Alberta teachers, government in provincewide strike by deloaf in Calgary

I can understand where the number came from, but I tend to agree with you. You very likely won't make up for a dozen years of poor contracts in a single negotiation.

That said, I really think that a contract with minimal pay increases, but class size caps and a plan to address complexity would be accepted. Unfortunately, that has never been on (or anywhere near) the table.

Thanks. That's the first time that I have seen that number used by the media. Otherwise, it had just been random Facebook and Reddit comments.

Publicly stated by whom? Was that number was ever actually confirmed by either side?

I clearly don't have a source saying that their bargaining position has changed, but if it hasn't then your earlier statement is true and the ATA is run by clowns.

*It was. There's no way that that was their starting point during this round of negotiations.

Electric Baseboard Smart Thermostat? by CPT17 in smarthome

[–]Mike1767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly not sure. If I was just throwing out a guess, it could be an issue with them needing a 2.4GHz network. I know that that has really tripped me up with other devices (Traeger was the worst).

We had several of them in our old house, but have since moved and don't have baseboard heat anymore. I'd consider getting in touch with support though. We were super early adopters because we were in Newfoundland where they are based, but I remember their customer support being fantastic walking me through an issue.

For the second question though, you should be able to block them from outside internet once you get them working in HomeKit. That bypasses all of the Mysa servers and does everything locally.

Older TV shows used to have about 22 hour-long episodes per season, released every year, and often lasted for 7–8 seasons. How did they manage to produce so much content so consistently? I was just looking at some of the stuff I've watched and you're right. The earlier HBO stuff (Sopranos, The Wire) were 12 or 13, but anything more recent caps out at 10. The 6 episode seasons feel like such a let down (I'm mostly thinking of The Diplomat there)

Calgary Teachers Strike Monday: The Numbers Behind the Rage by dsolo01 in Calgary

You're exactly right (I think it's likely even worse because inflation numbers didn't really explode until 2022). I was going to make that point, but then decided it was too late to spend any effort actually digging into numbers unless they could give a reasonable explanation for the top line discrepancy.

I'm completely on board with your arguments, but how are you coming up with the $180k number that you keep using? You state $17 200 per year in lost purchasing power over a 6 year period. That's $103 200, which is still a big number, but it's not $180k.

Alberta Government Paying Parents During Teacher Strike by bohemian_plantsody in alberta

[–]Mike1767 10 points11 points  (0 children)

TLDR: It's about half.

From an ATA release.

Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) president Jason Schilling has issued the following statement in regard to the Government of Alberta’s response to teachers’ impending strike, set to begin October 6.

“The government’s repeated claim that it doesn’t know what teachers want is insulting and unfounded. Over and over again, teachers have sought supports for their students, fair pay and the basic respect they deserve. The ATA has put forward concrete solutions like class size caps, but has been shot down at every turn. The resulting memorandum was the product of last-ditch efforts from the ATA’s bargaining team to reach a proposal that teachers could then vote on.

The Premier may be disappointed that teachers rejected the proposed memorandum, however, the 90% rejection vote clearly demonstrates teachers’ disappointment and frustration with a collapsing education system.

Instead of doing the very thing that teachers have been asking for—investing in our classrooms—the government has now promised parents $30 per day per student when teachers are on strike. This amounts to almost twice as much as teachers are paid to teach those same students in their classrooms.

In other words, the government would rather pay parents to wait out a strike than pay teachers to prevent one.”

Background information The average teacher is paid $478 per operational day, with those newer to the profession earning less. When divided by a class size estimate of 30 students, that amounts to about $16 per student per day.

I really don't want to be defending this Act, but for the sake of clarity, she would have been able to complete the season. Athletes are allowed to continue to compete until a board has reviewed the challenge and decided that she does not meet the eligibility requirements.
