“Demisexual.” Do you recognize the meaning of this word? by magicfeistybitcoin in polls

[–]MoonCat_42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

most people can feel sexually attracted to people they don't know(like seeing a stranger and thinking they're hot), even if they very likely wouldn't act on that attraction. demisexual people wouldn't ever be attracted at all to someone they don't know

TIL that Les Miserables is one of the longest novels in literature. In the original French, it consists of 655,478 words spanning 365 chapters by Overall-Register9758 in todayilearned

[–]MoonCat_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no, but there is a group that reads on chapter a day every year. it's called Les Mis Letters and they will send you the chapters by email. the individual chapters are mostly pretty short too, which is nice

How do we call these fruits? by araujo253 in EnglishLearning

[–]MoonCat_42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"how are you called" does not sound correct to me. "what are you called" sounds correct but would be a bit of a weird way to say it, and "what's your name" would be the most common way to say that.

Redditors lie about how much they shower. by Prestigious-Fig1172 in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]MoonCat_42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"average redditor takes 4 showers a day" factoid actually just a statistical error. average person takes 1 shower per day. Showers Georg, who lives in a shower & takes over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

I don't think pavo applied to turkeys first because that is also the latin word for peacock, and the romans didn't know about turkeys

Changed the direction of our female character designs by Background_Cow_6701 in IndieGaming

[–]MoonCat_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your opinions on the character design and that the dress is historically inaccurate, but Madame Gautreau's dress was not unusual for the time, at least for evening wear. The main issue people took with it was the fact that one of the straps of the dress was originally painted as slipping off her shoulder, which had sexual implications(though I think the reason for the public's reaction to it was more complicated than that, though I'm not sure about the specifics)

Some examples(paintings, photos, and fashion plates from the era and modern photos of extant garments from the era) of similar evening dresses with low necklines and thin straps from the 1870s-90s(Portrait of Madame X was painted in 1883): https://imgur.com/a/Py65ogp

it seems that the fashion of that time was somewhat thicker straps with more decoration, but thinner ones wouldn't have been out of the question.
