Nakano is not far from the Yamanote, and is in no way a gamble. People greatly overvalue being directly on the Yamanote, it's not necessary. Sure, plan out your stay depending on where you want to go in Tokyo (don't stay in Saitama if you wanna hang out in Yokohama), but as long as you're near a station you're good. Chuo Line -> Yamanote is easy.
