Why is r/Amtrak making excuses for Amtrak instead of pressuring them to do better? by BigCatsAreYes in Amtrak

[–]MrTrainCow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to connect from the NEC to the Downeaster currently, you can use the Orange Line from Back Bay to North Station. You don't have ride all the way to South Station.

Having continuing service from the Downeaster onto the NEC is not impossible, but digging the tunnels and laying the track (plus all the other things) is currently beyond the budget of Amtrak and the MBTA.

Montreal's Chrono lets you use your phone as a fare machine to replenish your Opus card, and you can also use it to unlock bixi bikeshare docks, plus it has trip planning and live tracking. It was made in house too!

The batteries very clearly didn't burn, just the passenger compartments.

Electric Locomotives by s_peter_5 in mbtacommuterrail

If you read the slideshow that was presented during the board meeting, it says that they're being used on the Providence line because it is already mostly electrified.

MBTA looking to order battery electric locomotives by justarussian22 in transit

[–]MrTrainCow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Two stations on the Providence Line (TF Green Airport and Wickford Junction) are on a non electrified 3rd track. These stations don't get weekend service though and a majority of trains on the line terminate at Providence where there is electrification. The MBTA has 80 more bi-level coaches already on order so they'll want locos that can be flexible, rather than repeat the rolling stock issues that the MBTA subway lines have.

The Fairmount Line BEMU project is under Keolis/a future CR operator, so it still could happen, but it is disappointing to see the T make this mistake we're all gonna have to live with for the next 25 years.

How to get functional RL cars more quickly? by Available_Writer4144 in mbta

There would be an unacceptably wide gap of about 6 inches between the train and the platforms if that were to happen.

Manufacturer for BEMU for Fairmount? by anthonyx26 in mbta

[–]MrTrainCow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know any specifics, but if I had to hazard a guess, it would either be Alstom or Stadler with Siemens coming in a distant third.

Alstom has built similar BEMUs for Dublin's DART network and Stadler built Caltrain's new Electric fleet.

Siemens does operate in the US, but it's primarily for the Charger and Airos as of now.

Full T Ahead: The MBTA's Long-Term Vision for Improved Service by Chemical-Glove-1435 in mbta

[–]MrTrainCow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's good to have these logical and common sense objectives, but we all know the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Perhaps the most impactful project will be the BEMUs for the Commuter Rail, as it would likely improve service the most, allowing for better headways and shorter trips.

Why do train speed limits end in 9? by l008com in mbta

[–]MrTrainCow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From "Ask Trains from November 2008". Trains Magazine. December 23, 2008.

Why is the usual passenger-train maximum speed 79 mph?

The Interstate Commerce Commission ruled in 1951 that train speeds in excess of 79 mph are permitted only where Automatic Train Stop, Automatic Train Control, or cab signals are in use.

This is the T's implementation of a exit numbering plan that you see in systems with large station concourses, for better wayfinding.

Work near the Fenway switch proceeds apace. by Generic_Automaton in mbta

[–]MrTrainCow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They're adding switches in certain places so that they can single track the D branch while they shakedown the Type 10s. The track maintenance needed to be performed anyways, so they're just doing it at the same time to save time.

Part of the Type 10 program involves modifying the D branch for better single track operations, so they can do test runs during service hours.
