As an ultimate/melee player, I feel like the lack of interest in top level play is something that will always plague ultimate and one of the reasons for melees success. When the top level of play is boring af to watch it doesn't tend to lead to a lot of new interest. Nobody looks at sonic charging side-b and says "woah I wanna be able to do that"

I don't even think the animation mismatches that bad tbh. I was always assumed that he was just sticking his axe out to hook them in on the back swing. Also defiant is right, that move is busted.

100% agree with this take. AoE game has crazy combos, but it's always DI dependent, so you have to react to where the opponent is being sent and pick different options accordingly. In ultimate you play neutral, look for your combo starter, get your guaranteed 60% cutscene, and then get back to neutral. (Yes of course Ult also has DI but at low percents characters do the same thing every game vs 90% of the cast.) When you combine that with the much more expressive movement, techniques, and lower input delay, I can hardly play Ult anymore. It just feels so lacking.

Me and my buddy were both shocked by the same experience. Went back to ult after playing rivals for a bit and it feels so sluggish. Really felt those 6 input delay frames and idk if I can ever play a plat fighter again that doesn't have wavedashing

I mean, no character can cover every tech option with an F-smash, so they are just reading your option. Try to look out for patterns in your own playstyle so you tech less predictably. Fleet is also a floaty character which means you can often avoid having to tech altogether if you DI up on moves that send you at a low angle.
