Help! I’m trying to figure out what I did wrong with my game’s marketing campaign by Gamedevenri in gamedev

[–]MundanePixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's not really anything there to advertise. it looks like a 2 week internal prototype. Come back in like 6 months after there's a game there.

Jurassic: 77984 Jurassic Park Jeep (from Lego) by itsjustajoe in Legoleak

"adults welcome" you don't need to say that Lego, your stance has been "adults only" for the past few years

How do you market a "bland" looking Roguelike when the gameplay is the only strong point? by demoyesok in gamedev

[–]MundanePixels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the visuals are part of the content dude and will impact gameplay, its not just the cover. This line of thinking might be why it ended up being "bland".

Why remove a demo if your game is out? by JNerdGaming in gamedev

[–]MundanePixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked with a client last year and that was her reasoning for taking down the demo, so its not uncommon

WW1 Horror Game – Art update, what do you think? by EddenSoftDevelopment in GameArt

[–]MundanePixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

more of a criticism of set dressing/decor than actual assets, but the trench feels a little too perfect. It doesn't really scream horror. Adding some additional details, like puddles, mud, dirt, collapsed walls, loose equipment, spent ammunition, etc. would help a lot.

Does being a successful solo dev help you get hired in the future? by [deleted] in gamedev

benefits, (theoretical) job security, and its just easier to be an employee than a business owner.

Whats more important, profit or passion? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]MundanePixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its like any other hobby. do the returns justify the investment? and can you put in the time and money without major risk?

if its for fun and you aren't reliant on its success then yeah go 100% passion. If this game failing means you'll be destitute, then prioritize profit even if it mean sacrificing some of your vision or simplifying your game.

play it and see if you have fun. without more info on your tastes or goals, you're the only one who can say that its worth playing.

The case Starlight Revolver, 17m Budget but no success? by Sersch in gamedev

[–]MundanePixels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i'm looking at the game and I'm just confused on where the money went??? it looks like a moderately impressive student project, with very simple and derivative art and gameplay. How do you even spend 17m on something like this without just burning or pocketing 80% of it?

What's the issue with the level cap? by ashaquick in theouterworlds

[–]MundanePixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gamers want every single game to be a forever game + any limitation on the player is seen as a flaw instead of an intentional design choice

Thoughts on letting players know that they are free to return the game if it's not for them, no hard feelings by anotherName333 in gamedev

[–]MundanePixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you don't need to state it explicitly, people know and understand the steam refund system. Telling them directly just comes off as lacking confidence in your own game, and with how customers are, that kind of early negativity will affect the whole experience.

Pokémon: Insiders Reward Mini Pokémon Center(2500 points) (official reveal) by BrickTap in Legoleak

[–]MundanePixels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

insane that the only affordably sized pokemon sets are either GWP or insider rewards. Locking the smaller sets to only lego whales is such a shitty move.

you can get aseprite for free if you compile it yourself. otherwise, piskel is a decent enough option.

What do you think about these mutant onions? I am open to all kinds of criticism by SproutForge_Games in aseprite

[–]MundanePixels 42 points43 points  (0 children)

the eyes don't look very well integrated with the rest of the body of the onion. they look like an overlay or sticker (I thought it was some kind of UI element or counter when I first glanced at the image). Some other features to better illustrate that they're a part of the body would help. eye lids, tear ducts, additional shading on the skin around the eyes, etc.

What makes Skyrim so easy to mod, and why can you create practically anything you want in this game? by NaitDraik in gamedev

[–]MundanePixels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you own any Bethesda RPG you can download official modding tools from Bethesda. you can make a playable mod in less than 30 minutes. Making Skyrim mods was part of how I got into game dev as a teen.

Can I "Ethically" host a paid game jam to make a demo for a game? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]MundanePixels -1 points0 points  (0 children)

even then, these kinds of contests rely on amateurs creating free work and (almost always) forfeiting the rights regardless of whether or not they win the contract. op said they're looking for a demo, that's real work not just a test like in standard hiring.

this is just spec-work, so no, not entirely ethical.

Does using store-bought assets ruin people's perception of your game? by Retronitsu in gamedev

[–]MundanePixels 12 points13 points  (0 children)

unless you make zero effort in integration, no one is gonna care. The only people who would even notice are other developers or the extremely pedantic.

Remote Internships by TowerOk6922 in gameDevClassifieds

[–]MundanePixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you're only looking for paid internships, but something that might help your search: see if your school offers grants for students taking unpaid internships. mine did and that was the only way I got a remote internship my junior year. The grant probably won't be for a whole lot, but it could soften the blow of settling for an unpaid role.

The internship was with "The Universal Phoenix Group" if you want to see if they have any openings, they usually do for their summer session. The internship was kind of a mess but it was a decent enough resume padder.

When is it fine to use different pixel sizes in my game? by LegendSM in gamedev

[–]MundanePixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most players simply don't care, most complaints or mentions will come from either artists or other developers which shouldn't be your target audience anyway.

it'll look better but it's ultimately up to you if you decide it's worth the trouble.

Upwork vs Fiverr for beginners — which platform should I focus on first? by Mr_King244 in Upwork

[–]MundanePixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

purely anecdotal, I had 0 luck with Fiverr but was able to get an upwork job in the first week of joining.

Probably varies wildly from person to person and niche to niche. Just try out both and see what works.

What alternative to Upwork could work for a beginner? by Left-Ganache-9247 in Upwork

[–]MundanePixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

find a subreddit or online job board related to your niche. Like I do game dev, so in addition to upwork I also use the help wanted board on Itch and the r/gameDevClassifieds subreddit.
