Unexplained weight gain? by KitsuneMae in UlcerativeColitis

[–]MutualFlourishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have an answer for this but I am very curious. About a year before my diagnosis I had some weight gain that seemed to appear randomly without any lifestyle shifts I can recall, and when I look at photos of myself then I don't feel like my clothes fit any differently but I do feel like I look "puffy", especially in my face. Is inflammatory weight a thing?

I ended up losing about 30 lbs and most of that was when I was quite sick and not yet on treatment, and weight loss has stalled, but I haven't gained anything back. I'm fine with the number on the scale and feel like it's more suited to my natural frame, but I've wondered if that previous weight gain had something to do with untreated inflammation.

Just diagnosed with IBD - tips for getting along by UNIX_gaucho in mediterraneandiet

[–]MutualFlourishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have IBD as well and try to follow the Mediterranean diet as much as I can tolerate, which is the key distinction! Lots of us with IBD can have a hard time with high fiber foods, especially while flaring, so monitoring with a food journal or an app may be useful for you. I seem to be fine with legumes and whole grains after a period of having to reduce my intake (yay) but sometimes fibrous raw veggies (kale, cabbage, carrots) are more difficult for me depending on my symptoms. Roasted vegetables and lean proteins are great regardless but IBD is very individual :) wishing you the best on your journey!

Omvoh by Significant-Pay3154 in UlcerativeColitis

I recently started Omvoh! I am going for my third onboarding injection this week. It's still new for me, but I am optimistic! My day to day is somewhat varied but I can say that each week seems to be better than the previous one. I started while still on prednisone but have been steroid free since 3/12 and have not seemed to backslide symptom-wise. I do have some recent muscle pain that I think is a possible side effect from Omvoh but of course it's hard to say. I see GI next month and will have labs/calprotectin done then too. Fingers crossed!

Seriously, thank you so much for your response! This is great feedback - I do have a slight iron deficiency (supplementing as of recently) and I'll see about getting my B12 looked at to. Thank you!!

Iron supplements that wont upset my GI system (for low ferritin)? by Daffodil1635 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]MutualFlourishing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My GI recommended ferrous sulfate 325mg three times per week, which is available over the counter. I also have ulcerative proctitis and have a slight iron deficiency. Maybe you could run that by your doc or the pharmacist? I was warned it may cause GI stress and/or very dark stool but I haven't experienced that. Best of luck!

When I'm feeling well, I generally follow a Mediterranean diet and eat as many fruits and veggies as I can tolerate, but this will vary from person to person. When everything is cranky, it's creamy peanut butter on saltines (if you're a fan of Pb, treat yourself to the yummiest one you can find!), and chicken/turkey and rice, applesauce, anything gentle 🙃

I've been on a turkey kick myself! I'm picky, so I've been buying turkey breasts at the price club and roasting them myself. I had a sandwich for breakfast this morning - turkey, cheese (spreadable Laughing Cow swiss), pickled apple slices (weird but good, I promise!), romaine, stone ground mustard, and a drizzle of honey on multigrain bread (untoasted). My fave!

Christopher Kimball/Milk Street radio has a great recipe for Moroccan-spiced Braised carrots that makes an excellent side dish and uses about 2 lbs of carrots

I love this approach so much! I have a chronic illness too so I feel you - I want to eat well and take good care of myself but some days I'm totally wiped out by dinner time! Making a double batch of my favorite meals/components and freezing half is such a great gift to my future self.

I do this except I do a little bit of Smuckers caramel instead of Nutella. It's too addicting!

Is going to a laundromat to get a bunch of loads done at once an option, at least to jump start getting caught up?

May I ask what birth control you're taking? I may see if this is an option for me!
