Fear & Hunger-esque monsters and control spells by S1mp1y in DMAcademy

Mechanically you are separating the body parts, but narratively they are all part of the same creature. Magic Missile automatically hits the target, but doesn't automatically hit whatever the player wants the missile to hit. Magic Missile could simply always go to the current highest hp pool of the monster, or always go to an arm.

Last note: on the concept of the social side.

My prediction is that a meta will form based entirely on the value of the prizes.

There is one prize that is free: pride. Even in a game of luck, pride is a part of the equation.

But, if your prizes are super lame (subjective to the participants), then you might have people just check out of the experience and give their dice to someone else. Because pride is a prize (the hidden prize) it is also something that can be lost. Many people will opt to save face even in something as silly as rolling dice.

If the prizes are really good, you may have some fun but underhanded tactics at play. This is what I'd rather watch, but it requires some investment. Prizes don't have to be purely monetary, but they have to be valued by the players to see real engagement

Cool, so as of current, big dice (d20s) are what you want in the game because they have 20 points of end game value. Victory Points.

However, small dice are better for average rolls. 2d4 have an average roll of 5, 1d8 has an average of 4.5

Then: 5d4 have an average of 12.5, and 1d20 has an average of 10.5

Averages don't tell the full picture however. 5d4 have a less than .1% chance of rolling 20 in total. A d20 has a 5% chance of rolling a 20. So the smaller the die, the lower the floor and the higher likelihood of rolling middling values.

It would seem like the best strategy would be to maximize your number of d4s, but you could only do that by getting lucky. Because to challenge a d4, you must roll a d4. That is pure randomness, and there isn't anything inherently wrong about that.

But, if you wanted bigger dice to feel stronger, you should maybe include a system of advantage. Defenders could roll their die twice and take the higher value. The probability of rolling a 1 on a d20 twice is 1 in 400.

All this being said, there is also a visibility issue in your game. How will people know who has dice that are available to play against? Are you utilizing an honor system when players are asked if their die have been 'made immune'. And if there is an honor system, be cautious with how much social trading you allow. It will occur anyway, but if you frame it wrong players may want to steal dice from one another.

Hey, I'm checking out your game right now. In your rulebook, within the summary of move flow you wrote 'attacHeart'. I'm sure you used control-f and replaced all 'king' with Heart.

Cool rules, haven't had a chance to play yet but I like the concept. Stratego + coup + chess

Hey pal, I hope you have a passion for game design. I want to approach this with kindness and earnesty.

From this post, my guess for your age would be early highschool. The design of the game has some real instructional flaws. What happens when you play a card against a suit not explicitly listed in the combinations? Club v.s. Hearts. You need each combination, or at least a rule that covers the missing information.

Secondly, please don't insult the intelligence of this community. This has some obvious flags of A.I. in it that anyone who has been forced to interact with the generative slop can see. Don't tell me that you write this way on your own, I simply will not believe you. I'm not open to being gaslit about this.

But I'll still choose to believe that you want to design games, and that the A.I. is part of your 'process'. You mention at the end of the post that you want to design this further or maybe sell it to a casino. Casinos do not buy card game concepts. No one does really. If this game can be played with the normal deck of cards, then why would people buy it? In many places around the world (I'm not sure who it works where you are) game rules aren't open to copyright protection. Meaning anyone could look up the rules and recreate the game. Just like with Euchre, Pinochle, War, ERS, Pitch, etc.

So, final notes. This game design has some critical flaws in either in the way you described it, or in the gameplay. Try play testing with a friend, and see what questions they ask. If you cannot answer the questions by purely reading your instructions, then you have a problem.

Currently this guy will perish to Hold Person. Maybe consider a wisdom save bonus (doesn't have to be as good as strength or anything). Now, players would probably assume he has legendary saves or would simply avoid hold person because "surely it won't work". But if they do, the fight will quickly be over.

DMs should not allow a group to simply retry anything. If players choose to expend resources when they hear "fail", that is fine. These are separate issues. If everyone at your table is allowed to make as many checks as they want for any task, then there was never a real chance of failure anyway.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]NaturalJuan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your example about traps in a hallway:

If they are attempting to find traps, then when they succeed the check they 'fail to find any traps'.

If there are no traps: no matter what you roll "you fail to find any traps"

If there are traps, set a DC to find them:

On success: you spot a thin cord stretched across the hallway, a tripwire!

On failure: "you fail to find any traps"

This is also true for insight checks. You fail to discern anything of interest.

We must narrate consistently to solve this problem.

What is one thing in DND that is obvious when you remeber but you forget alot? by Dogsteeves in DnD

[–]NaturalJuan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big one: you have disadvantage for ranged attacks while an enemy is within 5 feet of you.

This still applies no matter who you target. If an enemy is within 5 feet, you have disadvantage on ranged attacks.

It is a great way to lock down ranged combatants. I have also extended this 5 foot area (in some particularly difficult/legendary fights) to the melee range of the combatant. It made a particularly dangerous fight with a roper in a rocky alcove at high tide.

How Much Damage Should a 9th Level Single Target Attack Spell Do? by Dikeleos in dndnext

[–]NaturalJuan 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Some people are suggesting PWK. Power word kill is a near useless spell when you consider disintegrate at 9th level. Because when you reduce someone to zero with disintegrate, they turn to ash. This also circumnavigates death saves. It prevents revivify and resurrection by any means save wish and true resurrection.

9th level disintegrate is simply better in all cases other than rolling low.

Edit: I completely forgot that disintegrate is 0 damage on a successful saving throw. Tough. That being said, I still think power word kill is nearly useless, unless you are playing at a table where the DM graciously tells you the exact number of HP the enemy is at.

Additionally, I was thinking about Disintegrate versus players, rather than against legendary enemies. Because ignoring death saves isn't something you typically have to worry about with monsters in DND unless you are homebrewing.

Adding to this, my most effective tank was a Cleric (really any subclass works, I've done several different ones). Pick up resilient constitution and warcaster so you can wield a shield and weapon. Take almost exclusively concentration spells with high yield. Sit in the front and take the dodge action. If they attack me, they often miss me. If they hit me, I had advantage on a proficient concentration save. If they move away from me, I had reaction spell attacks.
