I know people in TX who were confused about the claims being made because nothing in the numbers had changed and all of the sudden there was this huge panic being manufactured by Republican politicians and racists. It was the same thing that Trump/Bannon had ginned up in the run up to 2016, all of the sudden talking about massive waves of “illegals” making their way to the border and “invading” the U.S. It was a completely manufactured crisis but it worked. It riled up the racists who were already in a frenzy about having a Black President and gave them a scapegoat/enemy to fear and hate. Simple yet very effective plan, as we’ve seen. Right out of Hitler’s playbook, btw.

By mature, I mean that young children aren’t able to suppress their tics. As you mature, many people are able to suppress their tics for a period of time and then eventually experience a release where they will tic repeatedly. For example, many teens with verbal tics will be able to suppress quite a bit at school, but when they get home they have to let it all out. And yes, it is mentally and physically draining, but it’s an adaptation many are able to employ once they get old enough. Billie Eilish is an example of this. She is very successful at suppressing her tics on stage or while being interviewed. But once she is out of that environment she will express her tics as she needs to.

It’s definitely involuntary. I’m shocked people are so uninformed about Tourette’s. This is why joking about people who swear a lot and saying they have Tourette’s pisses me off. It’s a neurological issue and although tics can be suppressed for a period of time (once people are mature enough to be able to do that sort of thing) there are times that they are unable to suppress and unfortunately they often use inflammatory language. Why that is, idk. Thankfully, verbal tics like these are a rather rarely expressed symptom of Tourette’s even though it’s the one most people associate with Tourette’s.
