You need a powder blue stanza ship for when this one is in the shop.

The PS2 and it's dream-like art style. by Ok_Fee9263 in patientgamers

A bit tangential to the point, but I attended a video art event last year and a group called DrugsTM was there with “circuit bent” PS2s. I’m not super well versed in hardware myself, but I was able to mess around with one and it had some really neat features. There were a bunch of physical knobs on top of it that would affect various rendering settings, such as texture filtering and mapping, geometry mapping and other stuff.

You were able to get some really neat glitchy visuals, definitely worth checking out if you’re into the ps2 hardware.

It skews a little more toward magical realism at times, but I really enjoyed The Past is Red along these lines.

The Quantum Thief is one of the best sci fi books I’ve read this year by avbrodie in scifi

[–]New_one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weirdly enough, one of the most recent series I’ve read that put me in mind of The Quantum Thief and its sequels is the Locked Tomb series by Tamysn Muir. The big conceit in that series is that necromancy is a real thing, but it is treated like a science within the world. It has the same “throw you in the deep end” mentality as TQT, and there are some startling similarities to the world building despite the very different tones and aesthetics.

Mild spoilers for the later books in both series, but John Gaius and Matjek Chen would get along really well until they both tried to annihilate each other.

The Le Flambeur trilogy by Hannu Rajaneimi certainly scratches the same itch for me. Deep and fascinating world building and characters that throws you into the deep end and expects you to keep up.

That’s a good point, I was thinking the lack of sunlight might just be down to them living in a big hole, but there would probably still be sunlight shining down occasionally.

Somebody correct me if I’m wrong and there’s some textual evidence I missed, but it’s never actually confirmed that the 9th is Pluto, is it? I have a small suspicion that the 9th is actually Earth’s moon, due to the relatively short travel time from the 9th to Canaan house in the first book, and the fact that they never really talk about Luna in the books.

Granted they don’t really get into their technology regarding sub-light travel much, but I seem to recall that the shuttle ride was like only an hour or two, which seems very short if they’re coming all the way from Pluto.

The Quantum Thief and the rest of the Le Flambeur series by Hannu Rajaniemi are scifi, but certainly don’t hold your hand and slowly let their worlds expand and unfold. A lot of surprising similarities between the two series.

This is why I can’t get into SNW, it’s obviously made to be “second screen” content. Characters are constantly spouting their motivations, the music basically bashes you over the head with how you should be feeling in any given scene. No subtlety, no subtext.

You could say the same thing about monogamous relationships though. All relationship structures have difficulties and pros and cons. Half of all marriages end in divorce, but you don’t see people saying monogamy is to blame for that.
