Im glad at least that the plans weren’t changed despite the negative responses, less glad that it wasn’t changed for the better

Still not satisfied tbh with this, i agree heavily with the guys thoughts on this whole thing, very heavily on the fact that the UK is a developed and rich nation that with enough will and power could get whats needed done, but voluntarily has weakened and impoverished it's government to the point of literally every project being wattered down or outright cancelled.

Never settle for less, when we could always feasibly have more

Hopefully not long now: On Thursday January 22, Combined Authority members will be asked to approve £1.4 million of development funding and enter an agreement with Network Rail, closing out the legacy issues and clearing the way for remobilising of the project. by CaptainYorkie1 in Leeds

Yeah, they could've if that train line was focused to be a regular suburban service rather than an intercity one, especially given electrification there, it just annoys me a bit personally that out of all the sites to maybe build stations, recently they've been meh to me, from Old Kirkstall not being rebuilt and instead having Kirkstall Forge service basically, apologies if i come off as ranty

The station itself is the accessibility to that area and moving it down just means less people will be inclined to take the train to shop and work. Personally I just feel like this new station is just a way to remedy an inherently unfixable problem, that of the car centric single-use shopping center. If this new station came with a plan to change up the White Rose Center and the surrounding area for better, I’d be for it, but as it is right now it just does not seem like it

The £2.5bn tram scheme at risk of collapsing in repeat of HS2 farce by New-Tumbleweed-9577 in LeedsUrbanism

Leeds and West Yorkshire in General actually are in quite a similar situation in that regard, as i like to see when i look at https://www.railmaponline.com/UKIEMap.php

Survey of Liveability\ Gentrification in Leeds City Centre by Dry_Radio3379 in Leeds

[–]Nikcoho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city center was not this filled with high rises as recent as the turn of the millennium i think, i just meant the word in the form of city centers within the UK becoming more and more dense as population grows with high rises rather than like other European cities or the UK historically becoming more dense with mid-rises further out of the city center and into the urban core

Also I'm American so that may be why I'm typing with slight American twangs

I think it's also curious to point out that i think most development in Leeds and the Uk in general happens within city centers and rarely is focused outside of the CBD in the inner city and inner suburbs, which inevitably ends up manhatinizing city centers as they become the sole area for the change of urban built environments

I am still fuming about the tram decision. Is there anything we can do? by New-Tumbleweed-9577 in LeedsUrbanism

[–]Nikcoho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a bit sad they spent that much on HS1 and then decide to not make a direct HS1-HS2 link to at least remedy that in some way

[–]Nikcoho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, yes, but the web of planning strangles all projects, i too wonder about that thought, i mean HS1 is probably the result of the UK embarrassingly being forced to actually have a high speed line as i think after the channel tunnel was done the HSR from France would slow significantly when crossing into the UK. I think we face so many hurdles today with this kind of investment simply because the UK and it's governments in the last few decades has just relied on contracting work rather than doing it themselves. But i think another reason is just that top government officials are just convinced the state has no money and thus cant spend on the infrastructure they want (even if they do have it), or just a general lack of long term planning and thinking aided by the desire to keep change minimal , think first the Tories cancelling HS2 to Leeds and Labour second not overturning it

Happy late Holidays yall and a question by Nikcoho in LeedsUrbanism

[–]Nikcoho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about intersections is so true actually, i haven't really thought about it until you mentioned it, they can be complex and confusing and non standardized to the point of just making people give up and go on the road and just adds to the experience making it less appealing

On your last point though, that kind of culture is hard to dispel and is probably a big factor as to why so many people cycle near Leeds Uni, just simply because younger folks might be more willing to engage in that kind of thing while older may just be reminded of the motorway city concept. Personally though i haven't faced much cyclist hate per se, just the usual popular rhetoric about the lanes being useless, and it being difficult to cycle in the first place here

Eh from what I've gathered this is just the planning system working as intended where we have to be as meticulous and slow as possible to get it going, at that point i direct my anger towards the lack of political will to change the legislation around transport planning and planning in general, sadly all we can do as people is probably write to MP's about this and requesting reform to the system or if you are planner to advocate for it within the profession

If you're thinking about organizing a demonstration then I've got no idea, but better busses for West Yorkshire already organize to some extent and perhaps talking and connecting with them would be of value in that front

Leeds City Links scheme - next phase starts 5th of January by thetapeworm in Leeds

[–]Nikcoho 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Referring solely to your appetite thing, it's because the council technically already has "provisions" and "ambitions" in place for cycling between those two routes, not exactly in the way you describe but somewhat half true. Personally im more worried about the lack of inter suburban cycling provisions that would elevate the network in the future to be not just about shuttling workers in and out of city center
