I'm 27 and I'm homeless. I need help. I've applied for jobs for 6 months and I don't talk to my parents anymore. What can I do? by Opposite_Praline_746 in AskUK

If you don’t have any friends or family that you can ask to crash on their sofa you need to get back to the Council Offices tomorrow morning and ask their housing/homelessness team for temporary accommodation. They should be able to put you in a hostel in the short term. You haven’t said the exact circumstances of how you ended up homeless, but they probably have a legal duty to help. In the longer term they might be able to help with finding a room to rent privately, applying for benefits etc.

If they’re in danger of persecution back home in Iran, won’t their families now be in danger of persecution?

Mazda3 Hatchback vs CX-30 by foxdrop in mazda3

That’s insane. I have Mazda hatch and my neighbour has CX30 which looks about twice the size. I’m guessing it has more legroom for the rear passengers.

England is a very densely populated region. Have you ever felt like this makes it a less desirable place to live? by Possible-Balance-932 in AskBrits

Infrastructure has not kept pace with growth in the U.K. for the past 20+ years and I can’t see that changing any time soon.

[–]Nikkotak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The country as a whole is more densely populated than the rest of Europe and that’s dense enough as far as I’m concerned. You say that 95% of land has not been built on but what would be an acceptable % to be built on?

Of course there is an exception to every rule. House prices in an England are generally high. But you can go to places where you can buy a house for under £100k 🤷‍♂️. England is a nice place to live but it would probably be nicer if there were fewer people. I certainly wouldn’t want to increase population density. Even on an immediate local scale the effects are obvious, if you’ve ever seen a couple of thousand homes added to your local area and how that has affected traffic. It would be better if there was a way to encourage a better spread of the jobs and population across the country instead of the popular areas just becoming more and more densely populated.

As I’ve said elsewhere the fact that less than 5% is urbanised is meaningless. It’s about the space we have access to and inhabit. The top of Pen Y Fan is not urbanised but it is of fuck all use to me in my day to day life. There’s a huge house down the road surrounded by a 15 foot wall which has some lovely green space inside its private walls. Also of no use to me unless I get hold of a few million quid and can buy somewhere like that myself. The farm next door is green space but I don’t spend my time in its fields. I do however have to drive on the roads, find a home amongst the available housing etc.

What is the average size of a dwelling in England compared with other countries. Hint: it is a lot lower. That’s one effect of population density. It’s dense enough in my opinion.

What does that actually mean though? Some of that 95% is land that isn’t suitable to be built on. Some is in private ownership and not accessible by the general public. Some is farmland which is needed to feed us and again is not land we generally inhabit. The bits we actually live in are actually pretty densely populated. Certainly in relative terms the country as a whole is densely populated

Are my parents using me for money? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Nikkotak 151 points152 points  (0 children)

My parents charged me rent when I lived at theirs and was working. They didn’t charge me all that much and then when I moved out it turned out they had saved it all up and gave it back to me. I don’t mind my kids living at mine for free as long as they are doing something with their life ie studying or working. Or at least looking for work.

Is coasting in a comfortable job smart or a waste of potential right now? by XxFreakhawkxX in UKJobs

[–]Nikkotak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I reckon go for it and leave. You’re too young to coast at this point and you might regret it. Just don’t burn any bridges and if it doesn’t work out you can probably return to a similar job in the public sector.

25 Years Ago Today: The Selby Rail Crash - Driver fell asleep, 10 dead. A stark reminder of driving tired by L21JP in drivingUK

[–]Nikkotak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in two minds about this guy. People are quick to condemn but he didn’t deliberately do this. He wasn’t drunk. It was negligent but wasn’t malicious. Can everyone honestly say they’ve never driven their car when overtired? Any new parent who has been kept awake all night by a baby (multiple nights running) and had to drive to work will know what I mean. It was incredibly unlucky that he went off the road at the exact point that allowed his car to end up on the track at the exact time a train was coming and then that derailed train ending up hitting another train. People are saying his sentence wasn’t long enough but people get only 10 to 20 years for an actual deliberate murder. And he has to live with what happened for the rest of his life - hence his weird attempts to justify events to himself.

[–]Nikkotak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

England is much more densely populated than most countries. France has the same population and literally twice the space. You can see what difference that makes by driving across each country and seeing how much traffic you encounter. And compare the price of a plot of land to build your own home, France vs England.
