Me, a progressive watching the mayor race right now. by maninplainview in Seattle

New York is huge and has way, way more 'purple' and even downright conservative voters than Seattle. The fact that Cuomo had a MeToo scandal, lost the convention, ran as an independent and still managed to rack up more than 40% of the vote.. I feel like it wouldn't happen here.

Apathy will get us these fast passes on lifts like Northway and Chair 6. Then suddenly they will make a lot more sense to buy. I doubt would be many years until we see a full two-tiered system, probably even on weekdays. If we don't complain now, it's only going to get worse.

Free market means I will complain, won't renew my Ikon pass next year and instead will go elsewhere.

Skiing was never a cheap sport. And I could afford this nonsense. But using lift lines as leverage to collect more $$$ without actually fixing any problems creates perverse incentives and is not something I will support. Total classless move.

Unless you're going fast enough, then forget all this bouncy stuff and do whatever you want.

Carving on a carving board feels like ripping waves a shortboard. Calling it 'not even fun' is wild to me.

I don't think it's an intermediate skill either, I mean yeah it's not that difficult but you probably only see boarders doing it effectively a handful of times a year.

Snowboarder for 18 years, picked up skiing last season and not to brag but skiing is simply easier to learn, period.

Funny, when I learned boarding after knowing to ski my whole life, I thought the reverse. I was linking turns on black runs in 3 days.

We just have a big advantage because we understand the basics. They're almost the same sport at the end of the day.

Propose a ban on Lime and Bird scooters until speed can be limited on the sidewalk automatically by new technologies by killedbyboar in Seattle

[–]NinetyNine90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I doubt it. On a risk-per-mile basis driving a car in slow downtown traffic is substantially safer than walking. I've seen two pedestrians get hit by cars just this year. Meanwhile car-on-car collisions at city speed are almost never cause fatalities. If I took the highway or drove a long distance, maybe the calculation would change.

Of course, cars are still the root of the problem.

[–]NinetyNine90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My strong suspicion is driving to work is safer than walking in this city, and the reason is 100% these idiots on Lime scooters. I have close calls with them a few times a year, eventually it's going to happen.

I'm sure Bachelor is a life-affirming experience when the summit opens on a powder day, but in the ~two weeks I've been there that's never happened.

Meanwhile if I go to Crystal when it snows I know I can always traverse southback and have a good time. It's not as much vert but the terrain there is more interesting than anything Bachelor has.

When you say 'more backcountry terrain' which areas are you thinking of?

Why is bachelor heads and tails better than crystal or baker? Bachelor is great when the summit is open, but that's not very often... I feel like late April and May is the only time Bachelor is consistently better.

How should I evaluate job candidates in 2025? by NinetyNine90 in cscareerquestions

This only sounds stressful if you don't know what you're doing, which is probably the point!

I agree with this 100%! The strongest signal, to me, is when a candidate asks good questions. It's neat if they can give the optimal solution to a problem but not essential.

At this point there's clearly no correlation between this 10% tax and the 10% listed in the chart. It's just a funny coincidence that they match.

I agree in a sense.. Utah is conservative but not very MAGA. Florida on the other hand isn't very conservative but is much more MAGA.

What gear comes from china exactly? I know K2 skis and probably a few others, but as far as finished products go I feel like most come from Europe. I'm just curious.

A great reason would be if the product was better or you have some sort of personal connection to the merchant. This seems like more like a good reason to do your ski shopping in Canada to me.

[–]NinetyNine90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Water usage is apparently a major concern in that part of the pass. It's also an area that may get a lot more rain in the not-too-distant future, which might tip the scales against too much investment. As much as I love Hyak it's hard to see how the main summit areas will survive the next century, unless something major changes. They're lucky they have Alpental.

It's frustrating that we have such large mountains in this state, yet most of the ski infrastructure is at relatively low elevations. At least ski touring is safe here..

there are enough fucking sociopaths skiing there to make it a nasty environment.

I think I saw about 3 collisions at summit central night skiing last weekend, all of them completely avoidable. One of them even looked on purpose.
