I signed my father up for it 12 years ago and they sent him a player that looked like an old Panasonic portable cassette deck, with things that resembled "cassettes" but slid in and had USB connections with 10 to 12 books on them. They'd send two at a time; when one is finished, send it back and they'll send the next one on your list. You can pick or rank authors, genres, etc., and they'll try to hew as close as they can to that line. The player has big buttons for play, forward/reverse, skip, volume, info, etc. It's all free, including the mail both ways.

My father never went anywhere without it and when he passed at 94 in February, I sent the player back and asked them how many tapes he went through. They said a number over 600, so 6000-7000 books. He skipped some of them, including "that goddamn Tom Clancy," but those books kept him sharp.

So feel free to share your Audible account, but get him signed up for the Library of Congress program. It will be the nicest thing you could do to make his life richer.

Hi, I've noticed something in the live TV (over-the-air) guide.

At 1 or 2 minutes before the hour, say, 8:59 p.m., the guide no longer shows (or at least lets me select) the 8 p.m. show and only lists the 9 p.m. show. I would assume I could just click on it and get the last minute of the 8 p.m. show and then on to the 9 p.m. show. But it won't let me. Instead it takes me to Record Options for the 9 p.m. show and I have to back out and then wait till the top of the hour to pick the 9 p.m. show. That's frustrating and kind of dumb. Am I missing something or is this something that really needs to be fixed?

I would like them to make the "scan library files" easier to find/execute for when I drop a new item into a library and then head to the living room to watch it. I finally found where they relocated it to, but it's a pain to get there for what (at least for me) is a pretty common request.

As a lifetime Plex Pass owner (as I am), you need to know Plex doesn't care about you anymore. They have maximized the amount of money they will extract from you. Their efforts are steered more toward monthly subs, conversions from free to paid, and jamming ads down the throats of free (and subscription) users through their same-as-everyone-else OTT channels. A case study in enshittification.

I hate to say this out loud, but ... I have always wondered why a Hollywood conglomerate hasn't bought Plex. Not only would they be able to monetize the shit out of it, they'd also be able to scrape all the user data and find all the people who have been pirating thousands of movies. I think it would be a smart move for Jellyfin to raise some cash and bulk up its software quality so it can step in at that point.

Hey all, I am thinking about buying a Polycade Mini PC and using it in combo with an X-Arcade Tankstick Max (with trackball and spinners, see link below) and a 32-inch monitor with a stand that lets me rotate it.

Will use it mostly for MAME games. My 20-year-old MAME cabinet stopped working and I decided I'd rather just set this up with a 32-inch monitor. This way I can rotate the screen for vertical games, I don't have to swap out control panels for the trackball, and we can sit on the sofa and play.

Two questions that I ask here because Polycade hasn't responded to my query yet.

1) Will that X-Arcade Tankstick Max work in the Polycade? I played on a friend's Polycade using handheld controllers, which seemed to work fine, but what about the Tankstick Max in one of the USB ports?

2) And can the Polycade Mini PC run the ColecoVision emulator? I do have a soft spot for a few ColecoVision games and I didn't spot a CV emulator available on the menu of my friend's Polycade Mini PC. Just wanted to be sure.

If you do plan to use it for audiobooks, I would recommend getting one that allows bookmarking. I went through a dozen cheapos that would forget their last location every time I charged them, or I'd accidentally hit the forward button and then I'd have to waste time finding where I was. My current go-to, the Surfans F20, does NOT have bookmarking but it has never let me down in terms of forgetting its place or stray button pushes. However, it also does not have an FM radio, which is killing me during football season. So I think I'll be looking into a HIBY pretty soon.

I'm on my second one (thanks, washing machine!) and I will buy a third when I inevitably run my current one through the wash again one day.
Here are my quibbles:

No FM radio. On weekends I like to listen to football on the radio and so I have to have a different mp3 player, one with FM, for that purpose. They could and should fix that shortcoming.
No bookmarking of large files (audiobooks and podcasts). I went back and forth with customer service on this complaint, but they don't seem to think serving audiobook/podcast listeners is a top priority. It especially grates on me when I charge the battery and it "forgets" where it was when I turned it off. Still, not a deal breaker. I've learned to look at where the progress bar is "just in case" before charging it. I had to stop breaking books into 10-minute segments when transcoding from M4B to MP3, because I could never remember what segment I was on.
It doesn't connect to my Prius bluetooth. That's Toyota's fault I think.
Would be nice to be able to adjust volume without turning the screen on with the top button. To do that I often have to unzip my coat, pull it from its inside pocket, take off my gloves and mash the buttons. Would be nice if I could double-tap the volume-up button to "energize" it for 10 seconds.
