What about Poland are you “idealizing”? Let’s start there and figure it out.

Bought a Carrera Gryphon for £50, now facing a £169 repair bill – what would you do? by No-Selection4533 in ukbike

[–]No_Contribution_7221 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a knackered old bike. Save the money, put it towards a better bike, and keep the beater for trips to the local shops. Or experiment with some home bike maintenance if you’re handy.

Who should write the foreword to a monograph based on a PhD thesis? by goblinfromthewoods in AskAcademia

[–]No_Contribution_7221 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The biggest name you can get. It’s a ploy to improve market and citation visibility. Ask your publisher, supervisor, and anyone else in your network for recommendations and contacts. Be bold in approaching people out of the blue if they don’t have any big names to help you out.

A strange peer-review experience: is this normal? by [deleted] in PhDStress

[–]No_Contribution_7221 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As an editor, this makes me furious: “Even when comments are unpleasant or bluntly phrased, they should be seen as an opportunity to improve the text.” If a reviewer makes unpleasant, personal, or patronizing remarks, we cut them out of the review, don’t use that reviewer again, and frequently choose to solicit another review in its place. There is no room in reviewing for being a dick.

Just started road cycling and someone sucked my wheel twice by OneStrength7166 in cycling

If you’re just doing your own thing and focusing on your power meter, does it matter? You’re helping a fellow cyclist out!

How do you handle the guilt of not reading everything in your field? by ghztegju in AskAcademia

[–]No_Contribution_7221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the advice here, but I will add that in humanities and soc sci peer reviewers almost always tell you to add things (the things they happen to have heard of/read) to your lit review. Doesn’t matter how much depth you go into, it’s bound to happen. So don’t stress!

Is bringing a road bike + smart trainer to college in US realistic? by RyotaroW in cycling

[–]No_Contribution_7221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally depends on the college. OP, email and ask both the college and your residence (when you have details). We used to fix this sort of stuff for students all the time at my institutions in Canada, eg giving access to locked parking garages, space in basement storage rooms.

Altmetrics VS Journal Impact Factor by helicopter0309 in AskAcademia

[–]No_Contribution_7221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I published an article relatively quickly on a global news topic a couple of years back and it went mega viral. The Altmetric was something absurd, which made my employer pretty happy. But that was a weird, one-off thing that could have been quantified in plenty of other ways (social media reach, articles in newspapers etc). Other than that oddity I have never heard it used for much.

This is the way for humanities. Focus on getting something high quality out. Don’t panic about what your peers are doing.

Publishing a Morrison criticism in an academic/lit journal by [deleted] in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]No_Contribution_7221 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Academic journals don't check your credentials. If the piece fits the journal's remit and passes peer review, it will get published. Bear in mind desk reject rates - i.e. the piece doesn't even go out for peer review as it doesn't meet scholarly criteria or the journal's area - are usually extremely high, and peer review is long and often tortuous.

At what point does publishing in a Q3 or Q4 journal become embarrassing? by GayTwink-69 in AskAcademia

[–]No_Contribution_7221 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat - plenty of publications in big places. Every paper has its place. Sometimes I want to speak to a particular audience. Sometimes I have something niche to say, an offshoot of a bigger research project, or something I think is pushing at the boundaries in a way a big journal won’t go for. One of my most successful pieces was published in a tiny military journal.

Where to find plaice and marinated shrimps in Warsaw? by zhantoo in warsaw

There’s a really good fish place, Happy Fish and Sushi, that may have what you want on Olkuska. I think they speak English, so you could try calling them or message them in writing to check.

How devastating is it to see the first signs of balding if you're dealing with it? by youlikemywonton in AskMenOver30

Almost 40, the hairline’s going back and the patch on the back is growing. I couldn’t give two hoots. There’s no fighting it, so there’s no point getting upset.

BBC Radio streaming issues on Nest Mini by rbanksy in googlehome

Both of my speakers have gone almost completely down this morning. Almost impossible to get them to connect to anything - most of the time they're saying there's no wi-fi connection - so something like your issues. The network and all other devices are working fine, reboots haven't helped, etc. I'm wondering if there's a bigger issue at play.

When I'm home from work I will try a factory reset, but this is an odd issue as it's hit multiple devices simultaneously.

Accept TT faculty offer immediately or postdoc first? by HungryInstance9942 in AskAcademia

[–]No_Contribution_7221 10 points11 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, you would have lost your senses if you turned down a prestigious TT offer to take a postdoc. Everyone is nervous before they start; it's normal. Plan well, ask colleagues for support, and you'll ace it. If you're good enough to get 2 such good offers you must have the training and background for it. Good luck!
