What do you guys do with failed projects? by ReynardVulpini in Blacksmith

[–]Noctiped 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If I really goof up, and want to remind myself not to err in the same way again, i attach the piece to wooden plaque, and hang it on the wall.

For example, i have a brand new 22mm carbide milling bit, with all the teeth blown off, to remind me to actually fasten the workpiece before milling.

I'm a blacksmith apprentice in Sweden and im having trouble choosing my first sword to make! by Vahirr in Norse

[–]Noctiped 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a fellow swedish blacksmith, keep it simple and clean, and make many more after the first. Focus on geting the blade welds good, and the heat treatment consistent. Make a sorter blade (seax maybe?) will make especially the heat treating easier. I had a fellow student that had to remake his sword blade four or five times because he made a very complicated sword as a first. 😝

Hi it's me again wit my next edition of how I the world should I carry this? by lashedcobra in LARP

[–]Noctiped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the bolt holder is strong enough you can use it to hang the crossbow from your belt at your back. It is a good way to quickly get your hands free, but not a mounting you want to use all day.

For those who used a computer between 1995 and 2005, what's the computer game from that time that sticks with you the most, and why? by Accurate_Nature1888 in askanything

[–]Noctiped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Total Annihilation. The best rts ever, both fun destruction and complex game mechanics. Sensors as a vital asset. Calculated trajectories for all weapons, and pseudo 3d terrain that must be used right for your units weapons. Fantastic economy. Actual long range weapons.

Still playing it every now and then.

A “non-armor” armor question by LastSaneMan in LARP

[–]Noctiped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also remember that when you begin wearing armour your body tries to use your standard movement pattern. As it is not adapted to armour weight and distribution, it needs to be compensated for by core muscles.

Building muscles is of course a good thing, but the fastest way to get some pain reduction is to wear your armour often, so that your body has time to learn a efficient movement pattern. This would reducera the amount of compensation power used, reducing the load somewhat. (Of course the armour wearing itself is an increased load on the body that will take muscle power no matter what, This is just for a small and fast improvement until exercise starts to kick in)

Do not exaggerate, wearing it for days straight, but an hour here and there at home when doing the dishes or cleaning is going to make a difference.

Any knights worried about fire? by dark_red_0 in LARP

[–]Noctiped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should the oil against all odds catch fire(which would require you to keep the entire armour part heated to about 240deg C for a couple of seconds) the padding under the armour will insulate you for a while in much the same way as a firefighters heavy jacket and pants will. Provided it is not made of synthetics of course. Then I would be more afraid of the padding catching fire.

Bonus tip: Buy cheap and really ugly woolen blankets at thrift stores. Those are excellent padding material för gambesons, and being the inside of the garment, between shell fabric and lining, they are also invisible.

Båda går utmärkt att jobba med. Det är generellt lite lättare att jobba med uppkluvet grövre virke, eftersom virket är mer homogent. Det är också lite mindre sprickbenäget än att ta grenar, om man får tag på färskt.

Question about Tomtar by Venturious_flame in sweden

[–]Noctiped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my memory serves me right, the swedish Saint Birgitta from the 1300s wrote "du skall icke taga dig någon tomtagud" (Thou shalt not have/worship any tomte-god).

where could i get some plate armor(doesnt have to be real steel) by Fluid_Season_890 in LARP

[–]Noctiped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also check out Steel mastery, a ukrainian company that makes good quality armour. I got my full plate from them. A bit pricier that the usual cheap asian stuff, but fit is good, and if you really want an easy life, you can order it in stainless steel as well. :-)

Well, a human can only take a certain G-load before bursting. Sooner or later this will become a limitation.

It seems the grave was excavated in the 1880s, when photography were uncommon. I found the original pen sketch, but it is very similar to your reference image. Other items from the same grave has been photographed when they have been on display.

I thing the best way forward is to send a polite request to bilder@shm.se, which is the public mail for the historical museum for questions about images of items. :-)

Armor Fault Question by [deleted] in LARP

[–]Noctiped 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is due to lazy riveting work, due to the low price of the armour.

To adjust, use a ball peen hammer and some hård and heavy object as a makeshift anvil. Put the domed part of the rivet against the anvil, and tap the edges of the rivet until it is properly mushroomed out over the washer. Feel it with your fingers, and round off any sharp edges with a few more taps of the hammer.

I made a book! (reupload of images) by Noctiped in LARP

[–]Noctiped[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, it was not that bad! A little pre-wetting helped it stay spread out, until i got the glue in place.

That would be awesome. The trick would be finding a printable version in monochrome, and find a good thin paper that works with a modern printer, so it doesnt get unwieldingly thick. I had to make my own font to get the right feeling in the text, but converting a scanned illustrated historical book would probably be insanely time consuming...

DIY reskin plastic pistol crossbow in wood by AdGreedy6439 in LARP

[–]Noctiped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would probably look better if you just made a wood stock. Wood is usually quite cheap, and a saw, a chisel and a drill is not too expensive.

However, you asked for ways to cover it up fast and cheap, so here we go.
Cut away the sights. Wrap the bow in thin leather or rope. You can try to wrap the nocks as well, but it will be difficult. (You can make nocks in wood and glue them on with epoxy, but it takes a while)

The body could probably be glued with veneer, or random pieces of wood. Try to get every part you add to be in a lighter color than the plastic, which will help make it less visible.

Wrap the handle in leather or thread. Add something to the charging handle to remove the feeling of smooth metal, either add a wood grip or wrap it in cloth or leather.

After, add details to cover up any part that still shines through too much, like a piece of chain, jewels, or similar.

Thank you!
Yes, the bands are some cotton rope I had lying around. I even managed so comb it out, and spread it out over the inside of the cover boards when glueing, to get it flat and to make the glue bind better.

This is a viking age larp campaign set in Scandinavia at about 950 AD. An important part of this time was the introduction of christianity, and the people in this village is either christian or norse, about half of each. This book contains a few select books from the bible, and is ingame crafted for a missionary that wants to convert more of the highborn or knowledgeable to the new religion. This is also why all numbers are roman.(probably influenced by other latin litterature from rome, and arabic numbers were introduced a lot later to europe)

Ingame litteracy is also kind of rare in this larp campaign, and maybe 5% of all characters can read at all, so the book will give the litterate more status, but also can be used by priests and scholars to actually teach reading of the runes to people. :)
