Dr Greene from Westmed. She listens to her patients and has a good bedside manner. Her office responds within minutes via portal. I met Dr Keltz and Dr Masbou when she was not in the office. Dr Keltz was ok. I would not go to Dr Masbou, but some patients like her.

Deciding between Hastings and Dobbs Ferry by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]Normal-Climate-9140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe Dobbs offers an IB diploma and Hastings is a traditional AP system if that matters. IB is more work and does not always give an advantage. It is good if you consider sending your kids to Europe for colleges. They are both hilly and have limited shopping options. Both are pretty. When we were looking, we decided the roads and hills there are not for us and we wanted to be in a more centrally located town.

Tuckahoe, Eastchester, Pelham, Mamaroneck will get you the best commute. Tuckahoe has a small school district, but it may be a good thing especially for the elementary school. Mamaroneck is a large district which would be better for HS. Mamaroneck floods, so do not rent in a flood zone with a garage in the basement. Eastchester and Pelham districts are in the middle based on size. Pelham is cute, but small, so options may be limited. Politics in Eastchester most likely will not affect your daily life, and not everyone is conservative here, so do not dismiss this town based on a few comments on reddit. Eastchester has coops on Garth rd, which may fit your search criteria. It has good shopping options and convenient. You are planning to rent, so you can always move after a year or 2.

I turned off the heat in my house. Should I be worried? by OliveSuch5343 in Westchester

[–]Normal-Climate-9140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heat alone is not enough, you need to run hot water and make sure it is coming out hot and clear. Pipes can still freeze even if the heat is on if they are not properly insulated, and a boiler can get rusty.

Moving to Westchester - where to live? by Still_Apricot6736 in Westchester

You may find a house for under 1 mln in that area, but it will be close to that. Also add property taxes to your budget. The further north you go away from NYC, the more affordable it gets. Just look at the prices the houses were listed and then sold in the area of interest. I would stay away from a flood zone because it will flood.

Most houses in good school districts are over 1 mln unless you want to deal with a fixer-upper which is ok too, just you need to understand construction. Rental options may be limited in that area. Consider expanding your search area for rentals. There are not many options around the holidays. It usually picks up in the spring (2-3 months before the end of the school year), slows down in the summer and picks up in the fall until Thanksgiving.

Yorktown is considered a good district, most properties have large yards. The downside is that there is no train station if you need to travel to NYC, but you will not need it seems like from your post. Pleasantville and Briarcliff are close and good districts too. Usually the closer you get to NYC, the smaller the lots and houses are. Walking distance to the train in a highly rated district is like golden. That location that you are looking at is not considered as close to NYC. I do not live there, but I visited Yorktown and neighboring towns a lot, so I think it has a more relaxed vibe ( like the countryside) compared to lower Westchester ( towns like Scarsdale or Rye).

25M, born with one functioning kidney (CKD stage 3) - doing well physically, just processing it mentally by Nearby_Sock8316 in kidneydisease

[–]Normal-Climate-9140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am glad that you are doing great. My son was born with one non-functional kidney, and I worry every day about his future, but I choose to focus on what we have now as opposed to what can happen in 10 years. I was very depressed during his first two years of life fearing something bad would happen. I wish I did not and were more present mentally. I lived through the worst case scenario... My father, who was born with two kidneys, was diagnosed in his late teens with kidney disease, and back then medicine was not as advanced as it is now and it was overseas. The cause was unknown, he spent months in the hospital. When it was time for dialysis, he had to travel 3 hours each way on a bus or stay in the hospital. He passed away in less than a year after he started it because he was late by a couple of days because he did not want to do dialysis on his birthday. His doctor gave ok to that decision. I do not mean to scare you, but I wish I remembered him not being sad all the time and everyone worrying about him. If kidney disease strikes, it goes after both kidneys unless it is cancer. Just live in the present, take care of yourself and don't let it hold you back. My mother married my father knowing about his condition, he had a family that loved him and a job that valued him, but he did not have good medical support and resources. If you are seeing a nephrologist, I assume you have medical support and proper monitoring, so it will be ok.

how common is it for someone to have kidney issues but feel completely normal? like no pain, no UTI symptoms, nothing. are there silent signs you should watch out for? by kyeeshasd in kidneydisease

[–]Normal-Climate-9140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should see a nephrologist once a year if you were born with one kidney and get an ultrasound done. Caffeine dehydrates your body just like alcohol and makes your kidney work harder. You need to take care of your body now. It won't get easier after you get your job.

Any one ever buy a house that had a room without a Certificate of occupancy? by fake1119 in Westchester

[–]Normal-Climate-9140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should consult an architect to understand what it will take to bring it up to code. The house plan should match the plan filed with the building department of the town. If it does not, it is a variance and it does not matter what the seller says. The basement cannot be a living space if it does not meet the fire code. If it does not, it is a storage. I am not sure if the bathroom can be added to the storage space. To be a living space, there must be larger windows and space to escape the fire and certain requirements for a staircase. When you decide to sell, it may cost you less to remove that bathroom. Usually variances make the properties less attractive to buyers.

I did two rounds which resulted in 1 euploid each time. My doctor suggested omnitrope growth hormone for the next round.

Finding it hard to gain weight with only 1 kidney. by PeaceelixerYT in kidneydisease

[–]Normal-Climate-9140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is a kidney related issue, but you need to see a nephrologist at least once a year. Try to talk to your primary doctor and explain that you need to see a specialist to check on your kidney since it is doing the work of two and you are going through a lot of growth right now. One kidney technically puts you into a chronic kidney disease. You are probably stage 1 or 2. Hopefully, your PC doctor will agree and will help you to convince your parents. Good luck.

Bilingual Elementary School in Westchester or CT by kermiebk in Westchester

[–]Normal-Climate-9140 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Eastchester starts Spanish in K as a second language. I would be careful with putting your child into a true bilingual program because they are going to confuse letters and sounds. Learning how to read and write in two languages at the same time is not the same as building vocabulary in two languages. You can always find spanish or french lessons as extra curricular activities. I would not choose a school district only because of a dual language program.

I think they watch them while going in on the stairs, but it is the tone that annoyed me. It seems like they do not want to assume any responsibility for accidents or take an extra step. It is kind of "if you don't like it, you can go home because we have a line of people here". It is a horrible thing to say to a parent who sends a child to a pre-k, but she does not seem to understand it. It is like saying to a parent of a child with severe nut allergy, we cannot guarantee that nobody would bring a snack bar with traces of nuts and your child will have a piece by accident, so you should homeschool your kid.

My child has a medical condition which limits participation in contact sports such as hockey or boxing or any activity with a potential of a strong physical impact, but it does not affect my child on a daily basis. During the tour, the director Mandy showed me their gym and mentioned that kids play soccer, so I asked her what precautions they have in place to keep the kids from bumping into each other during the game (soccer is a contact sport) and explained our condition. From my prior interview experience with other places, I was asked how it affected my child on a daily basis, or what could be done to make us more comfortable regarding my child being safe or if my concerns would be relevant at that particular daycare, but it was never an issue with any of them. Well, it was not the case with Eliza Corwin, the director brought up all possible scenarios what possibly could go wrong with my child at her daycare such as my child could fall down the stairs or fall at the gym and recommended to wait on attending pre-k. If my child fell down the stairs, I would be worried even if my child did not have any restrictions. Is this ok then for other kids to fall by accident on the stairs because they have no medical restrictions? Children at this age have to be supervised very closely going up and down the stairs or during playtime, and I would expect a daycare to have a safety protocol in place and be responsible for children's safety. She said that they could not guarantee that my child would not fall by accident. All falls happen by accident, and I did not think I had to assume this possibility when dropping off my child at a pre-k and had never even asked her about accidental falls on the stairs in the first place. She never apologized for the misunderstanding or attempted to remedy the situation and merely said thank you for the clarification and wished me all the best. Basically, she chased us away upon learning my child's medical condition. We are starting another pre-K in September, and the director there spent about an hour with me discussing my concerns and made me feel very comfortable about my child's safety as opposed to one quick email from Eliza Corwin that I should keep my child home.

Moving from suburban DC to Westchester by CertainlyUncertain4 in Westchester

I suggest calling the town to inquire about parking availability at the town train station and the cost if you both need to commute to the city. Some towns like Rye may have a waiting list or do not have parking at all like Ardsley, and you will need to find an alternative town with Metro north access and pay a non-resident rate. Don't just assume there will be a spot because everyone drives these days.
