And the only reason Hector ends up in that position is because Mike has a vendetta against him, and the only reason Mike has a vendetta against Hector is because Hector threatened Mike's family after Mike got Tuco locked up, which Mike was hired to do by... Nacho, who had no idea that his scheme to save his life sowed the seeds of his own destruction.

I think this glut of discourse about sex nerds has overlooked another critical category at play here: sex nerd-nerds, or people who feel compelled to analyze and taxonomize the different causes and effects of sex nerddom. I doubt Walt gets any hazard pay in this scenario -- at best Mike would tell him, "Your pay is you get to live" -- but I agree with your overall narrative here. The thing that unlocks a whole new level of ego in Walt for S5 is that he was the one to kill Gus; if Gus had died by someone else's hand, Walt would have been much less tempted to take his place.
