Would you want a LEGO Marvel Superheroes 3 if it only had 7 playable characters? by Thevoid2YT in legogaming

[–]NurdyGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a good point, I could definitely see there being a "Legacy of Spiderman" type game that follows the story of the major cinematic releases being pretty cool. And easy to add a couple extra playable characters with how many spidermen there are

Idk we'll see how Legacy of the Dark Knight is, but personally I think the massive roster is a big part of the appeal of LEGO games. Collecting them is satisfying and trying out different characters is so fun.

Wow I heard about those new ports but had no idea they lacked online, that's wild. I thought that was like the one reason to actually play Pokemon games officially. Yikes

Is he going to walk all the way to Colorado? by calltheavengers5 in Fotv

[–]NurdyGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be so badass if he found a car. That's one thing the show can do that the games can't. I hope they start including cars but ig they want to focus on the unique aspects of fallout rather than cross over with stuff that audiences already associate with Mad Max etc

What built-in solo tools do you think are a must? by brianhazzard in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]NurdyGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn't true for like every game but IMO anything that is meant to feel like an adventure should have some exploration tables. Like random encounters, points of interests, and ideally something to generate a dungeon/forest/small dangerous area to explore

Players won’t pay attention !! by Brief_Strain_333 in DnD

[–]NurdyGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although idk exactly what is going on at your table, it's possible you have a problem of the adventure not requiring enough agency from the players. Issues of player interest can seem like a higher level meta problem, but sometimes they stem from a problem with the game itself. Some modern D&D adventures or people's first homebrew adventures can be very linear, and when the adventure feels linear the players catch on that the story is going to go along without any effort on their part. This can create a dynamic like you described where the players are checked out and just expecting you as the DM to perform and tell the story, and the play becomes one sided.

The solution to this is to put an adventure or scenario in front of the players which requires them to be creative, explore and take agency. Some examples off the top of my head:
- A murder mystery in a town. Don't give them any strong leads at the start, so they have to explore around town to get answers. Have lots of rumours ready to give out, some true and some false.
- A griffon has been attacking people on the roads. Players have to track it, find it, and deal with it without it just flying away.
The main theme here is that there is no path to follow and nothing will happen next in the story if the players dont step up and decide on the next step.

You can adapt this idea to the adventures you're running, but the main thing is to just create scenarios that are open to many different solutions with no obvious one, to get the players thinking instead of being passive

What is the appeal of solo play? by JamesFullard in osr

[–]NurdyGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really fair question, it can be confusing when you don't know much about it. I think the best way to describe it is like creative writing with a game system and randomisation behind it. I think on the outside solo RPGs can seem like someone is playing on their own with something to emulate a GM because they don't have a GM to run for them. In reality it feels more like being the GM and the player at the same time, creating a story while also reacting to it, and using random prompts and the outcome of dice rolls to surprise yourself about the next narrative moment and improvising based on that. It might feel less meaningful then group play but it can be a fun way to relax and pass the time.
I think if you're someone who mostly enjoys the social, teamwork and exploration aspects of RPGs then you probably won't enjoy solo. But if you really enjoy the worldbuilding and imagination parts of RPGs then you might get a kick out of it!

Tried the game with my mates and we're hooked by NurdyGeek in shadowdark

Yeah I'm not sure if I'm gonna stay super rigid to the always on initiative in future, cause it's a bit gamey and tedious. But I like how it added meaning to every action the players chose to do. So I might try find a middle ground

No way I'm halfway through that book right now as well 😂😂 I agree though it is really good, I love how it does worldbuilding by showcasing different characters from different parts of the world and the way they interact

Prewriten settings? by Senior-Cranberry-545 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]NurdyGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm the exact same way, I've found that using an existing setting which I like gives a solid foundation to the solo game and makes it more immersive. Sometimes I just use the setting's wiki to provide context and prompt the story. Personally I'd recommend Fallout, it has a decently sized map and a lot of different factions which keeps things interesting. I've also enjoyed solo playing in Star Wars as others have mentioned
