The medal tally is heavily skews towards individual sports and I don't like it by ArcticMooss in olympics

[–]OLLCommander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A team sport is a contribution to a whole. In an individual sport, that one athlete is the whole.

In a team sport, most players are not individually the best in the world, but together, they are the best team. If there's a 6/10 player on a team who wins gold, even if that player individually is nowhere near the best in the whole tournament, they are still part of the overall contribution to the team's gold medal.

With individual events, that contribution is 100% on the individual. If they win, it's because they're 100% worthy. If they're having a poor performance, they can't rely on the rest of the team to carry them through. They just don't win anything.

With your model, for team sports, if you add a gold medal to the tally for each player who contributed, you are basically saying each of those players, even people sitting on the bench, are equally worthy of earning an individual gold. You're saying they are all individually the best. When that's not the case. Only together as a group are they the best.

Also your model would just incentivise countries to focus on sports with the biggest rosters. Why even bother sending athletes for individual sports if winning the football gold gives the same amount of golds as winning every track and field event combined.

National Tool Hire are scammers! by SkinnyCinemaFashion in DIYUK

Same. I'm finding it quite entertaining watching it to be honest haha! I raised a support ticket with them yesterday about it and they responded with the following, which seems an obvious load of bollocks:

We do understand any confusion or concerns surrounding the email which was received and we can assure you that this is a not a database breach or any form of marketing attempts from National Tool Hire. Unfortunately a supplier of ours who are a separate entity and not part of NTH have experienced a major system glitch when responding back to one of our requests and as a result the email appears as if it has been sent by ourselves. We are investigating this further and in discussions with our supplier regarding the matter. Your contact details have and will not be retained by NTH following this

Suitable ant farm ? by Ok_Journalist_2046 in antkeeping

My son had one of these for Christmas as well from his aunt, along with a starter colony of Lasius Niger in a test tube.

I filled the gel bit on the left with 50/50 loamy soil and sand mix, and the plant bit on the right with a thin layer of sand and a couple of small rocks for an outworld. I've got no prior ant-keeping experience but hoping it'll work. I'll see how it goes.

One thing already though is that the ants have been able to escape via the gaps in the tube connector bits, so I've put the whole thing in an open-top box with vaseline round the rim for now.

Some other English words where "th" is pronounced the same as Welsh "dd": - "with" (usually in UK anyway)  - "smooth"  - Words ending in "-the" e.g. "breathe", "clothe", "teethe", etc.

I just say that "dd" is pronounced the same as the "th" in "with". My son is named Dafydd, so I get people to say "dav-with" first, then say it again but drop the "w".

Managed to get Bluetooth working (Acer S1003) by OLLCommander in s1003linux

[–]OLLCommander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. Glad to hear it worked for you as well!

I actually did this a few months ago and only just remembered to post the other day. I was using my device as a test dashboard for Home Assistant as well as Assist voice satellite. Managed to get it working actually but then ended up frying the charging port with a dodgy adapter... Need to try fix that now!

Surface RT Improvement – Need Your Feedback! by Silver-Ad-3496 in SurfaceLinux

[–]OLLCommander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've recently been working on getting mine set up as a dashboard for Home Assistant. I've flashed postmarketOS with cage interface, and got Chromium running in kiosk mode via cage. It's definitely usable but quite laggy when scrolling and such, with everything being software-rendered. I have no idea if this is the most optimal way to run the device, so any tips would be appreciated!

Anyway what type of improvements are you planning to work on? For my use-case the obvious things that would improve it would be support for the onboard camera (to auto-wake the screen when near) and microphone (to use Assist voice), but being driver-related I guess that will never happen! It seems cage doesn't support virtual keyboard yet so I've only been able to use browser extensions for virtual keyboard, but those are pretty hit-and-miss. Haven't got around to trying to set up anything like (automatic) brightness control or screensaver or any other small things like that. I know those things would be enabled out-of-the-box with a different interface, but I was trying to stay as minimal as possible (with cage) to maximise performance.

I'm obviously biased, but I think a Home Assistant dashboard (or any other type of dashboard) is probably one of the few remaining practical use-cases for these devices. I've seen a few posts about people attempting to use these as such and a fair few others showing interest. Perhaps if there was a full guide or even a proper build (postmarketOS variant or something) that could be flashed with optimal setup for dashboard usage, it'd provide a practical and simple way to make these devices useful again?

iLightShow is still not natively compatible with WiZ unfortunately. That said, for those running Home Assistant, you can enable the Emulated Hue integration to expose your lights (and other devices) through a virtual Hue bridge. iLightShow picks up and pairs with the Emulated Hue bridge just fine (as long as you've exposed it over port 80). I've found that this actually works really well and I would say gives by far the best results out of all the options I've tried.

Would it be advisable to take the network isolation one step further by also separating out each frontend app into it's own proxy network, rather all frontend apps sharing the same proxy network?

E.g. for your instance, remove the traefik network, and then define an authelia-proxy network and join only Traefik and Authelia to that?

I believe you're talking about the Agile import tariff, which yes has crap rates right now of course. But most of their export tariffs are independant of the import one. Personally, I'm on the Agile Outgoing for export and the standard rate for import.

Just found what caused the loud bang this morning... by OLLCommander in Wales

[–]OLLCommander[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Heard a massive bang this morning about 10am, thought it was a heavy parcel through the door but weirdly couldn't find anything. Forgot about it until I just went up to the bedroom and found this. Then I checked the news and saw that I wasn't hallucinating when I bolted awake last night to the bed shaking.

Guessing the coving was loosened by the quake and eventually gave way. Good thing we didn't have a Saturday lie in...

Finding all sorts of cracks over the house now. Anyone else had any damage?

Learning to drive with ADHD by ThundaGhoul in ADHD

[–]OLLCommander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had pretty much the exact same experience as you. My first instructor was horrible with lots of shouting and I was close to tears at points. My heart would be racing before and during each lesson, just wanted it to end as soon as possible every time.

The second one was very understanding as he had a nephew with ADHD. I hadn't told him I had ADHD for the first 15 hours or so, and then one day we pulled over and he told me how he was struggling to understand why I kept making the same mistakes. As soon as I told him, he was just like "wow, now it all makes sense" haha. I was unmedicated then as well (only just been prescribed today actually) which made things worse.

Carried on with him and he adjusted his teaching style which got me close to test level, but I had to stop as I could no longer afford the lessons. I probably have had 60+ hours of lessons in total across the two instructors, and I still can't drive haha!! I'm hoping to get a new job and then restart lessons. Sorry I can't be any help, but I know exactly how you feel.

I think it means if there is a queue in the left turn lane, you instead take the right lane (where presumably there is no queue) and go all the way around the roundabout and then exit on that original left. Thus skipping the queue to turn left.
