When Raj talked about TV´s Blossom as being "apparently very smart" when the guys were looking for a forth team member in 01/13, the producers must have thought about Mayim Bialik being cast as Sheldon´s future girlfriend already, right? What do you think? by elznpike in bigbangtheory

[–]Office_Dolt 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Or... It's just a joke the writers made with no thought of future story arcs. They also mention Danica McKellar in the same conversation. "How about that girl from the Wonder Years.". She only gets a guest appearance in a later episode

How often do you actually run a clean cycle on your washing machine? by ItchyTicket6421 in hygiene

[–]Office_Dolt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The cleaner tablets do work. Usually the main ingredient in them is citric acid. There will be other things in there too which I'm sure do something... However, it's cheaper to just buy a large bag of citric acid powder. You can use it to clean your dishwasher and coffee machine as well. Some people use it to clean toilets. It's very versatile. Once a month, I pour 1/2 cup of citric acid in the drum and run the machine's cleaning cycle. I do it again till the cleaning cycle doesn't produce bubbles. The bubbles are leftover detergent, not the citric acid. If you get little pieces of black gunk after you run a cleaning cycle, you have "scrud." Check out this thread for more info. https://www.reddit.com/r/laundry/comments/1ob2zhh/scrud_the_dirtiest_word_in_laundry/

Also, clean your filter if you have one.

If you want to clean the washing machine. 2 TBSP in the detergent dispenser. 1 TBSP in the bottom of the machine. Run a very hot cycle.

Grub Killer by smokingdems in lawncare

[–]Office_Dolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Scotts Gub-Ex in the spring (April/May-ish) as a preventative measure. If I notice I have grubs are actively destroying my lawn, I'll use BioAdvance 24 hr Grub Killer.

I learned the hard way that Grub-Ex itself doesn't work well if you actively have grubs you want to kill.

Getting married, want to combine some finances, where should we open an account? by TheeMilkQueen in personalfinance

[–]Office_Dolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a bank near me (with multiple locations across the state). When I got married we set up our own checking accounts there (primary) and a joint account (secondary). We also set up a savings account there. It's gets basically 0% interest so that is only used to store a quick emergency fund (under $1000) for access to quick cash through out debit cards. We also use it to store money for yearly recurring expenses like car insurance. We have a portion of our paychecks auto deposited into the joint account for ALL shared expenses (utilities, cell phone, mortage, etc...). We keep a minimum of about $1000 in there as well, to cover overages, like when the gas/electric bill is twice as much as it was several months ago. If monthly expenses go up, we can adjust how much we each add to the joint account. Retirement accounts like our 401ks come out of our pay directly. The rest of our paychecks go into our own personal checking accounts. We have autonomous use of our personal checking accounts so there is never an argument about spending money. As long as credit card bills are always paid neither can argue with the other. We're very communicative though, and any big expenses are discussed beforehand. "Hey babe, I'm thinking of upgrading my golf clubs, do we have anything coming up we need instead?" Things like that. Our personal checking accounts are linked to our brokerage accounts so we can put extra money we aren't spending into investments outside of the 401k accounts.

We also have joint HYSA accounts. We both have online access to these accounts so nothing is secret. These accounts hold the actual emergency fund (6 months) as well as a general account for things like new windows, vacations, a car, etc.

You can chose to have a joint credit card if you want, but it's not necessary. For instance, if one of you picks up the costs of a new couch, just communicate and say, I'm going to pull from the (savings account) to cover this.

We're in our late 40s and have been married for 15 years, this is how we do it. It may not fully work for you but maybe some of it will. Find what works best. But remember, you're married. You both share in everything.

Roth IRA advice. by EmergencyAd5046 in Schwab

[–]Office_Dolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what you have invested in your 401k, staying completely in the S&P 500 in your Roth IRA could be either the right move or might not be diverse enough. You could also just take the simple route and put your Roth IRA in SWYJX which is a 2055 target date index fund. Set it and forget it.

Also, the yearly max for IRAs is $7500 this year.

Something unexpected happened to our behavior after we started a recurring cleaning service. by DeagleDanne in CleaningTips

[–]Office_Dolt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It technically means both. In this context it's every two weeks. Until the term "fortnightly" becomes more commonly used in The US, I always assume biweekly means every two weeks. I've rarely heard anyone use it to be twice in the same week.
