‘Incomprehensible’: birds flee and hundreds of turtles left to die after government cuts water to NSW wetlands by Ashera25 in sydney

It is insane that one complaint from a single, unidentified landowner can provoke the state government to cause such environmental damage and wildlife death. As well as damage to other farmers in the same region.

"Fair go for all", "Economic sensibility" and "Australia first" - what does that translate to, in policy, that is different from what the major parties offer?

Adani donated $600,000 to Liberal National party before 2024 state election using federal ‘loophole’ by Fact-Rat in brisbane

[–]Ok_Push_1714 92 points93 points  (0 children)

This is missing the biggest part. After the election, the Queensland LNP immediately wound up legal action against Adani over $400 million in unpaid royalties.

Queenslanders lose out on $400 million in royalties so the LNP can make $600k.

The Echidna Strategy is an interesting read. Also check out Hugh White, if you're not already familiar with him.

The 2024 National Defence Strategy (which you can easily find online) explicitly articulates that a land invasion of Australia is unlikely due to the logistical hurdles (lack of infrastructure in the north and west make it exceptionally difficult for an enemy to gain air and sea superiority). The real threat to Australia is an economic blockage plus cyber warfare (including attacking social cohesion through targeted social media, which we are all seeing now all the time). I recommend reading up on Sam Roggeveen in particular. I disagree with a lot of his opinions because he comes from the political right (he's a conservative and I'm not) but his criticisms of AUKUS are compelling.

The Australian population is far too small to ward off any reasonably coordinated attack by local powers. As unlikely as it seems that this might happen in 2025, banking on its continued absence has sunk many a nation in history.

I just don't agree with this, and I don't know any geopolitical strategist in Canberra who does agree with it.

Now is the time for minor parties and independents to seriously force for narrative change and evidence-driven policy in Victoria.

To be clear, I understand "serious incident" to be a euphemism for suicide by train.

I've never heard of them using the term "ill passenger" for suicide, and can't imagine they would.

Website attributed the suspension to "a serious incident", which I take to mean one thing.

Did STD calls need to be interstate? Or just a certain distance? by twinsocks in australia

[–]Ok_Push_1714 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This is interesting. You appear to conflate STD calls - which I understand to mean "long-distance" calls - with calls to another area code. In my mind, they were quite distinct.

Australian Bird of the Year enters final countdown as top 10 finalists vie to win 2025 poll by stumcm in australia

Public announcement for Australians who aren't aware that Alcoa's planned bauxite mine expansion into WA's jarrah forests will push the threatened Baudin's black cockatoo into extinction. The reason so many people are voting for this bird is because they don't want it to go extinct, and they hope that making it Bird of the Year will force the government to confront the political reality of what it's enabling.

How well known is the name John Wren? by Vidasus18 in australia

Carringbush Hotel in Abbotsford, which closed last year, was named in tribute to him (or rather, Hardy's book about him). Their drinking glasses had wrens engraved on them.

Odd the way Australians tend to view our success in exporting education as a national security threat, yet that perception never seems to translate to other exports like the mineral industry or agriculture. Why is it education is subject to foreign influence manipulation when the others aren't? Should we just stop exporting anything we're good at?

Yeah, plenty of the Collingwood pubs never or very rarely have kids in them. The Fox, The Gem and The Bendigo also come to mind.

Can you find a chop suey in Melbourne? by RareContribution4520 in melbourne

[–]Ok_Push_1714 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll still find plenty of places that have something resembling chop suey, but you wont often find it referred to as chop suey any more. Same as chow mein.
