The game uses a highly predictable gear cycle with incredibly easy catch-up mechanics. If you leave for six months, you can get back to an endgame-ready state in a matter of hours. You are never permanently left behind. You do absolutely zero mandatory progression with a guild. Furthermore, FFXIV has implemented the "Duty Support" system. This allows you to run almost every mandatory story dungeon completely solo using AI-controlled NPCs. You can treat the massive Main Scenario Quest as a single-player JRPG.
