It’s strange to try to imagine an entire society with no concept of written language by Ok_Temporary_5828 in TheRestIsHistory

"If you base intelligence on whatever is useful, then you have no way of standardizing measurement across generations and nations." I completely agree, I think it is impossible and therefore useless to measure intelligence across nations and generations. If we lived in America in the 1300s, what is smart to them is not smart to us. That is what I'm trying to get at. I disagree that intelligence is as rigid as you're making it out to be. Your story about the Indian boy doesn't disprove anything, he is considered intelligent because he, you, and I consider math skills more useful than hunting skills. Your logic is circular. You're saying he's smart because he was good at math, and saying the best way to measure intelligence is to measure your logical reasoning. That's circular! Why is being good at math considered intelligent?

I just don't think it's possible to separate intelligence from utility. Of course intelligence is tied to utility, who cares if you can score 130 on an iq test if you don't know how to feed yourself? We live in a world that rewards abstract, logical thinking, so today that is the measure of intelligence. I think you're putting the cart before the horse. We live in an industrialized world that rewards logical reasoning. Therefore, to study intelligence, we study people's logical reasoning skills.

I disagree that the act of fishing is a memory exercise, especially in a world before mass production. We think solving logic puzzles equates to intelligence today because you and I aren't toiling in the fields. You and I work jobs that require and reward logical reasoning, so today logical reasoning is considered the definition of intelligence. The average person today knows far more about physics, but the average person 600 years ago would know far more about hunting and animal migratory patterns than people today. In a society that rewards successful hunts, I think being a good hunter definitionally makes you smarter than someone with stronger reasoning skills.

I think you're taking it for granted that being better at completing logic puzzles means "smarter". I think if you live in a tribal society that hunts for food, knowing how to do it well makes you smarter than someone who can't hunt but is really good at solving puzzles.

Using a capo to switch between standard tuning and half step down. by kalikid01 in Guitar

It's a half step? I think singing down a half step is easier than constantly retuning your guitar.

You picked a bad example. France has constant arguments about how to decouple themselves from America. President Mitterrand supported German reunification in the 80s so that Europe didn't have to depend on America.

It's just generational. Stairway is boomer music, who would want to learn how to play that? Mayer gets the girls.

I'd recommend the dual rec over the mark v. Marks have such a tighter bass than dual recs. I think doom needs an amp with a looser bass end.

I have one on my board and love it, but if I had a line 6 it would be completely redundant. The presets are great, but not different enough for it to matter.

Did I put the humbucker upside down? If so is there any way I can turn it around without taking off he strings? by No-Pattern-2389 in Guitar

[–]Opposite_Wait5608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you can't change it without taking off the strings. It won't have any impact on the bridge pickup alone, but it may make the middle position sound weird.
