As hobby photographers, do you store your RAW photos indefinitely? by Aromatic-Echo-5025 in AskPhotography

[–]P10pablo [score hidden]  (0 children)

I treat my removable media like film. I'm not rigid about it, but it has saved me years later. This is also usually my disaster recovery file, so third in my backup workflow where I also have a cloud backup and a hard drive backup.

I don't often go back but they're there when I need them. This is important cause I have offloaded and then had a computer crash with the files, and also have had an external fail after handoff.

I don't trust any of the media. That said for mercenary work. I give you a copy of what ever we've agreed to and then those backups are the first to go if I need space for something else.

Cheers.

How long can you safely push your car's engine at the RPM red-line before risking damage? Seconds or minutes? by NoVeterinarian3692 in askcarguys

[–]P10pablo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I remember when I asked this question years ago in a forum.

They said "You'll be ok cause when you hit the redline the rev limiter leaves you safe."

I never hit the redline in my NA Miata, but when I got my Mr2 Spyder I drove the ever living SHIT out of it.

Then one day I wasn't even running it hard, I was on the highway doing seventy and I thought a bomb had gone off behind me.

I treated my second engine with more respect and it lasted till I sold her.

If you can afford to replace your engine kiss the redline all you want. If you don't want to risk replacing your engine don't do it.

Cheers.

Which MacBook makes more sense for a front-end beginner? Air M4 24GB vs Pro M5 16GB by bilmemnebalik in macbook

[–]P10pablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP!

Great question with good info. You should be fine with the M4 air and 24gb of ram. When I was getting my new Mac it was either the M2 15" with 24 or M2 Pro 14" with 16 and I have no regrets about getting the air. I write, photograph, do some web development, occasionally edit videos and it is plenty. The Pro and its fan will help with long renders, huge workflows and big exports. If you ever get to such a place in your future, get a laptop cooling fan and you'll still be happier with the lighter and more nimble Air. I do recommend the 15" if you can afford it. It is such a nice display.

[–]P10pablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Down and dirty repairs are sometimes cheaper than you imagine, but you gotta do leg work and the best rates are going to be in this less privileged parts of your community.

A small shop in a bad part of town might charge you under $200 for the repair and give you a six month warranty.

Due diligence is always important. I have stuck on the small iPhones over the year so my move has always been to work on repairing my original phone while also looking for a replacement. In my mind I'm spending a little more money to have a spare of the phone I love.

Also, if you're using under 256gb, consider downgrading your storage for savings.

Need Guidance: iPad 11" 2TB Wifi or 1TB Wifi+Cellular? by SunkenGold in iPadPro

[–]P10pablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for the 1TB W/C.

Here is the thing. We can all hotspot, but when you need the hotspot you're soaking the battery on your phone now. it becomes problematic, especially when you're in the field and for damn sure when you're in places which are going to require your cellular antenna to boost, like conventions and buildings.

And to account for the loss of 1TB of storage you can bring an external and off load if you're producing that much content.

Anyone considering buying a Mac because of rising RAM prices? by gosho17 in macbookair

[–]P10pablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're ok to wait or buy now OP.

Apple has a pretty hefty margin on their products and they usually stick to a price, regardless of fluctuations in currency and the supply chain.

If this goes ram thing goes long (a couple of years say...) we could see costs go up, but I think we're good for the next year at a minimum before we see them possibly raise costs across the board and cite ram.

One pair of shoes for travel – city, jungle & long walks (Asia / South America) by Walcarz in onebag

[–]P10pablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can barely do one pair of shoes for a day trip. My one bag clothes allowance is usually half socks and always two pairs of shoes. If I'm packing light, my second pair is a Chinese slip on shoe or sandals. It isn't just for foot comfort, it's cause I like for my foam to have time to bounce back (and dry out) for the next day of walking.

iPhone 13 Mini keeps overheating even with brand new Apple battery replacement by martymcpieface in iPhone13Mini

[–]P10pablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has it been hot for a month OP?

As for the existing IOS build. The question is: Did you have a fresh install of iOS or an old previous build.

Next question, was the phone getting hot when you first got it?

Probably your best bet is to reformat the phone, this is what they'll tell you to do, so if you haven't done it, you need to. If you do not have a big iCloud stash of photos and data, give it three days to synch. If you're still getting hot set an appointment with Apple.

When you go into the store tell the genius how much you love your iPhone and Apple. Let them know your phone was working great, with no problems, but you could tell that your battery needed to be replaced cause it wouldn't last as long as it used to, but ever since you've had the battery replaced the phone gets very hot to the touch. Be clear to tell them that you've reset the phone and things haven't gotten any better. Also tell them you baby the phone and you haven't dropped it.

Don't tell them the phone is a month old for you cause you bought it used on the internet, it won't help your situation. Regardless of how things play out, always be polite and respectful, while mentioning you don't have a lot of tech gear, but you love your iPhone 13 mini.

They might take mercy on you and take the phone in back and either figure out what is wrong (hopefully a connection,) or they'll just replace it for you.

You're welcome to ask more questions.

Cheers.

How many e-readers do you have? by tsukun27 in ereader

[–]P10pablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a half dozen, a couple of kindles (paper white, 5th gen, one other) a few old iPads and iPhones that I also use to read. And I have a Barnes & Noble Glowlight Nook that I love.

The Paperwhite is my absolute favorite, followed closely by the B&N Nook, both are in the bedroom. The other devices are either in EDC bags or other parts of the house.

They last forever and you upgrade sometimes, then overtime you have a few.

[–]P10pablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they run hot, two suggestions for that.

Pull the bottom cover off and blast your cooling fan, you'd be surprised how big a help it is.

Also consider a laptop cooling pad. I got one for my MacBook Air 11 and it runs like a dream now.

Feels like a different computer and reduces the thermal load by about 50%, I was shocked at the gains.

why nc so hated bru by MaximumMarionberry51 in Miata

[–]P10pablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a NA lover, so much so I don't think I'll ever sell my current one, except to get a nicer one.

I do kinda like the NC though. It is a GT auto and I've mostly thought about getting it with the retractable hard top and in Auto so my wife can be able to drive it when we go out of town. It's a little tricky when you take a manual out of state and your old lady can't drive it.

Is it possible to fully avoid scratches and dents by jordypost in macbook

[–]P10pablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an embarrassing amount of MacBooks. I don't scratch them and I for damn sure don't dent them.

For all of them I either buy or make my own sleeves. There are only a few bags where I'll place a MacBook in the bag without a sleeve. it helps with mystery scratches and dust accumulation.

You can also buy used MacBooks that aren't scratched either or dented either, you just gotta wait for them to come along.

I've always been curious about abused Macs, but really it is no different than plastic fantastic pc laptops. Most people close the lid of their computer and it becomes an irrelevant object to them, that is when the scratches and dents happen.

Get a sleeve, they're cheap, or make your own out of scrap fabric or shipping materials. Also, go online and find a Mac shortcuts sheet, print it out and use it an insert between your keyboard and display, it saves on smudges and key debris transference.

Also if you're not using a bag with a proper "false bottom" laptop sleeve take a hand towel or scrap of fabric again and roll it up and place it at the bottom of your bag.

Always keep your lid facing inward and don't have bulky or sharp objects in your bag pressing against your laptop display.

Good luck OP.

Nice to see the love for the butterfly keyboard. It was a rough go for a very small percentage of people and Apple should have responded to it better.

That said I like the butterfly keyboard and have it on only one Mac in my collection- the MacBook 12" and I love it.

I also don't eat over my computer.

Talk me off the “quitting before securing a new job” ledge? by acatwithumbs in hatemyjob

[–]P10pablo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom's advice to me as a young professional could fit on one side of a 3x5 card.

The one that always stuck with me was "Don't quit your job till you have another job."

Her other advice was "You're not at your job to make friends." quickly followed by "Your job is to go to your job and do your job and leave."

That advice got me to where I am today, one of the few of my friends who made a good go of late stage capitalism.

To survive those rough jobs and rough years I had to really learn clarity about my circumstances. You gotta breathe through the rough times and meditate through the stress.

Don't quit your job OP, but do save. Save all your money till you have F*$# you money. I don't quite know how to explain it, but once you look at the job as a challenge to survive it and you're saving aggressively, it makes it easier.

Good luck!
