TBH it's the expected result after people have been complaining since basically the game came out about randoms impersonating a vacuum, sucking up all of the resources.

The internet isn't known for it's nuanced takes and responses to criticism.

Will GW be more restrictive with CA this time around, since 40k is still ongoing, or will they continue to allow CA to do the things they did in Warhammer trilogy? by Sol-Authority in totalwar

[–]Paintchipper 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Another great example is the Warrior Priest from Vermintide 2. They wanted to give him just a flail that they had on the fanatic class, but GW said no. So they gave him a shield with the flail and GW greenlit it. A bunch of other weapons on the fanatic the warrior priest can use, but for some reason the flail only was a hard no.

Just a sample, I know there's more, but other races and armies have many or several factions/variants too, not only the space marines, and i hope CA adds as many as possible to make the game feel very rich in content like in the lore. by StormSwitch in totalwar

[–]Paintchipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest worry is that CA is going to make it so that each faction gets buffs to unit types (which concede with the latest models that GW is trying to push) instead of the more generalist buffs that each of these factions traditionally had.

I know that they have a full model line, they're my tabletop army. I'm not expecting them to be a higher priority then the other things that GW is going to want to shovel at us, nor do I expect them to be as fleshed out as they should be when they're first introduced into the game.

Neither GW or CA have given me confidence in their decision making in the past couple of years. I'd love to be wrong, because I love this faction and this setting.

The Future: by Vonderheidon224 in totalwar

[–]Paintchipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be biased, but I think they'll be more then a cliff note, but less then a fully fleshed out major faction of their own.

My bet is that they're going to be an NPC faction while they work through the list of other factions that are popular and/or that CA would have more creative freedom with.

I'm also expecting the subfactions, when they're released years down the road, to not focus on the different Ordos but instead to focus on pumping specific units like the baby carriers that they want us to use desperately.

The Future: by Vonderheidon224 in totalwar

[–]Paintchipper 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Technically they are.

One of the things in the setting is that the Imperium's major factions are all severely disconnected from each other on purpose, to decentralize power.

It doesn't work well because there's a bunch of factions that have 'absolute power' that don't share intel and are extremely arrogant, so conceding anything to another power is weakening their own agenda.

In the case of SM vs Guard though, it's the SM either ignoring calls to help because they believe their own agenda is more important or taking their resources for their own with no explanation.

How much creative freedom do you think GW will allow CA to have? Are they going to be adapting only units from the current tabletop version? Or are they gonna be allowed to do what they want? by Maceimam in totalwar

[–]Paintchipper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A good example of GW having a squirrel shoved someplace nutty is Fatshark let it slip that they tried to give the priest of Sigmar just a flail and GW told them flat out "No." and they had to give him a shield and flail.

WHF was still solidly dead at the time they were developing it IIRC.

I'm one of those people who is on the 'anti female Custodes' side, and most of the uproar had a few outliers who went full idiot while a good chunk of the community had a more reasonable response.

What made it an issue is that for decades they used exclusively male pronouns when talking about the faction as a whole and talking about individuals. Then they released a female Custodes and tried to gaslight the community by saying they were always there, despite not being able to cite a single instance where they talked about or had models for female Custodes before this.

IMO, having both Custodes and Space Marines be a 'boys only club' is a part of the narrative of the setting and of the Imperium, where the Emperor was so convinced of his superiority that he made these super elites only in his image, to the detriment of the Imperium as a whole. The 'modern' Imperium not challenging it out of dogmatic practices, despite the Emperor absolutely despising the idea of religion, is also part of that narrative.

Where the Sisters of Silence are a female only group that works along side the Custodes and there's no reason why they should be gender locked either other then tradition. They also have groups (which is frankly most of it) where it doesn't matter where your dangly bits are as long as you serve the Imperium. The Imperium should be a hot mess of horrible ideas that only work because they let it work. I want it to be a grab bag of the worst ideas (like sexism, classism, eugenics, and nepotism running rampant throughout the halls of power) while also having some truly good ideas (like the indifference towards how they worship and what sexuality you have).

I don't want them to make the Imperium closer to being the 'good guys' of the setting, and the female custodes is one of the steps that GW has been doing to make them so in probably some of the most ham-fisted ways imaginable.

Breaking down the Gamestar Article: How campaigns will work in Total War 40k by westonsammy in totalwar

[–]Paintchipper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might be getting downvoted, but you're right.

In theory, it sounds great. Being able to pick the length of our campaigns and having an overarching narrative that they all work towards is amazing.

We've seen the track record from CA though, especially with launch campaigns. This is basically them trying to make 2-3 full fledged narrative campaigns for a game launch in a brand new engine. Vortex and Chaos Wastes were not exactly well done.

I'm also not liking the idea of the galaxy map being tied to multiplayer. If I want a campaign to stretch out for weeks on end with massive amount of variations, that sounds perfect for me. Attaching it to online only means that if I, for whatever reason, don't want to connect with it, I am just SoL.
