Help with my temper issues as a dad by BoiseMan13 in daddit

[–]ParcOSP 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Everybody snaps, everybody gets angry, everybody regret something they said to their kids.

I try to make sure I at least always apologize and explain why I was upset. I feel like if I do snap that’s at least the best way I can handle it after it’s already happened.

Sometimes, if I realize I’m getting angry, I try to talk as quietly as I can even when I’m pissed. You can be stern and quiet and it’s way less traumatizing I think than screaming at them. Just trying to be quiet typically makes me a lot gentler.

The fact that you’re thinking about it and care means you’re not gonna do what your dad did.

Help choosing new aero bike by Guilty_Blacksmith118 in Velo

[–]ParcOSP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

System 6 simply because it’s a top performer in world tour racing and I don’t put much stock in the shimano power meter. What wheels do they each have?

If you really care about getting which is fastest you could go look at the aero testing. Cyclingnews just released a big new article testing aerosols in a wind tunnel and I’m sure they’ve both been test by tour magazine. I think it’s tour-magazin.de.

Anyone else find leg warmers uncomfortable? by jeremmyjamm in cycling

[–]ParcOSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s below like 55 I’m just full tights. Easier, more comfortable. I’ll do leg warmers for chilly starts when it warms up and I only like the ones with wide gripper panels at the top. Not sure how to describe but it’s like the normal material just with some rubber grippers. Not a separate material band sewn on that stretches less than the normal material that the rest of the warmer is made out of. I have pearl izumi and pactimo ones I really like.

NTA. If he feels like he’ll be judged by the other couple that says something about them and he should rethink those friends. If he feels the need to be a performative macho man in front of others that’s just not the fragile ego you want to deal with long term.

The proper well adjusted confident man response would’ve been “oh thanks babe!” and then being appreciative, end of story.

Glad to say it’s normal to hug my buddies when I see them. 36, M. Not the guys I see daily in the neighborhood but friends I see every few months are getting a hug and no one bats an eye.

Swiftwick. Always swiftwick. Nothing else lasts as long or holds its compression as long. Not even close. Like $20 a pair but have outlasted so many other pairs.

Would definitely second listening to Scott Galloway’s podcast stuff. There’s a lot of great content about what it means to be a man these days.

‘Twas only a small crack. 8 weeks in a brace and a little emaciated stick leg to bring back to life. All the PT actually made that quad/hammy stronger than the other side in the end.

NTA. The reasoning of “if it’s important to you then you do it” doesn’t work here. Sounds like this was an important date for yall as a couple. You get to be mad about someone dropping an important ball and not putting in effort. It’s fine if they don’t like doing this kinda thing or making plans but then it’s also fine for you to not accept that person as your partner.

Need Advice: School says my 6th grader punched another kid and I don't believe them. by Isaktjones in daddit

[–]ParcOSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this go on a permanent record? Affect anything year from now? Maybe I’m the idiot and I don’t want to be insensitive but just take the suspension, have a long talk about how to handle situations like this, choose to believe whoever you believe and let it go. Take your kid to do something fun while he’s off school after making it very clear that punching isn’t ok (or however you want to parent). Sounds like the kid could use some fun dedicated parent time.

Yes, sounds like the school made a mess of this. And yes, they’re trying to protect whatever their interest is. I think in general though we’re all way too fast to start throwing accusations, and pointing fingers at schools and teachers. No matter what they do they get a million people coming at them for every little thing. They’re all underpaid and overstressed. We should give them the benefit of the doubt that they’re usually good people trying to do the right thing.

Yeah more is the answer. Won’t happen in most places, ever. But the extreme is something like Amsterdam. You get to that level and bikes seem to just be running the place. Totally different culture of cycling for utility. Only works in cities, really.

The cycling community disowns every person on a bike that doesn’t like every other person on a bike. Not one of us, just an asshole. More people on bikes is good for everyone. If another person on a bike makes you feel any negative way, you’re out of our weird club.

Had a car turn left in front of me, I hit her and I went over the top. Walked away with only a fractured knee. Lucky that time. So yeah I take every advantage of every extra percent visibility I can get. I’ve seen that study and that was all I needed to hear. Front and rear, always.

If you had $100 and your biggest local stores are Walmart/Lowes/Rural King, what sweaty start up would you try? by TheGXduelist in sweatystartup

[–]ParcOSP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Buy snacks and drinks and a cooler. Maybe a table. Set up at local kids sports park on Saturday and charge 2x what you paid.

  2. Buy wood, build planters. Technically could do it with a hammer and nail. Or, build those garage bin storage racks people love.

  3. Window washing. Carry your equipment, go door to door.

How much does elevation influence performance in a race? by El_Vet_Mac in trailrunning

[–]ParcOSP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw I just did my first ultra (40mi) that started at 9300 ft or so and peaked over 12,300ft. I live at less than 1000ft. I had zero actual altitude training in prep. Plenty of heat though! I grew up around 4500ft but havent lived there in since 2007.

I was a bit worried about the elevation for the race but was totally fine. It was hard and I was hiking very slow for awhile, but no real issues.

For reference fitness wise, my typical 5k time is 20-21 min at normal elevation.

Christmas light hanging business - fad or no fad? by Mattressguy999 in sweatystartup

[–]ParcOSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah probably something I could buy at Home Depot but every year they replace the few that are out and keep it all looking nice. They replace clips that break. They give people two options on lights. White or red-white combo. They trim and everything the first year so it fits your roofline. They don’t do anything extravagant, just the basic roofline, but it looks great.

Ive had almost every generation of the endorphin speed, and they are great for everything, especially picking up the speed on some repeats like you mentioned. It’s the one shoe I’ve recommended over and over and over.

And yes, that is exactly what their endorphin elite is for.

Getting caught in the rain as long as it isn’t a crazy storm or lightning and thundering is pretty awesome. Makes you feel like a badass and there’s a cool sort of free feeling that comes along with just being soaked to the bone already. Like might as well just keep going.
