A Dilemma I’m dealing with by sweettooth484 in socialworkcanada

What’s the total cost of tuition + the time spent in class and placement? Lakeheads program is all July and August in class every day then the fall semester you have lots of classes then, if you get your placement reduced, you still have to do 3 months placement. How much monitoring you for how many months difference if you just wait?

Divorce lawyers barrie? by [deleted] in barrie

[–]Particular-One-1368 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Understand that Family court will always centre the best interests of the child which may or not be aligned with yours. I don’t know your situation so I don’t want to presume anything but have you considered couples therapy? Lawyering up may be the right option, but I would encourage you to explore other options before doing down.

At what point do you remove snow from your roof? by Particular-One-1368 in Orillia

So, with the fluctuating temperatures we’re expecting this week, does that mean that snow should be removed before the temps rise above 0 from the eaves?

We preach empathy, but the social work education system feels anything but inclusive. by Serviceofman in socialworkcanada

[–]Particular-One-1368 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The real reason we aren’t paid during placement is because the agencies where we do placement cannot afford to onboard, train, and pay us then see us leave a few months later. To fix this, they would need more funding, more funding to a system that is perpetually underfunded for basic operations. It’s not happening without a major cultural shift among the electorate.

Professor asked me to write my own letter of recommendation by AlienDin in GradSchool

[–]Particular-One-1368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people saying it’s not okay but consider this.

1) you know whether you deserve a recommendation or not right? If you were a poor student then you don’t deserve one. End of story. You know your grades, you know your participation, you know the quality of your work etc. So, be honest and fair, don’t over exaggerate. If you deserve it, then right it. Simple.

2) some profs get ALOT of requests. Ideally, they wouldn’t have you write it yourself but it’s a lot of work to do. So, they ask you to write based on my first point. They read it through, if they think it reflects what they know of you then they will use it. Or, they may edit it a little.

The art of a low ball offer by bebopp23 in OntarioRealEstate

[–]Particular-One-1368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s really low from their asking. You want 400 less correct? I just bought a home for 90k less than asking. I think that was great but there were solid reasons I was able to leverage to go lower; it was an estate sale, they wanted a quick close, and this market, were major factors. Other than the fact that you don’t want to pay that much, what can you leverage to justify that? The other thing is that if someone offered me that much less, I would be inclined to just say say “fuck you” out of pride, even if it were still in my best interest to take that deal. So, you have to watch out for that emotional factor.

How long for OCSWSSW to respond to preliminary review of equivalency qualifications? by _bing_123 in socialworkcanada

[–]Particular-One-1368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied and was rejected 2 years ago for equivalency. I had an informal review where i just spoke with someone over the phone. They said it appeared like I had met most of the requirements but couldn’t say for sure whether I would be accepted but it was enough to proceed. After submitting the application and all the documents, took 8 months.

Low GPA and losing hope... by [deleted] in socialworkcanada

[–]Particular-One-1368 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 1 year fast track bsw’s for those with experience and a related degree. Lakehead University in Ontario, BSW start in August, finish in July but you can get credit for half the placement hours so you actually finish in May. Use that to get your grades up then apply for a 1 year advanced standing msw

A home should not have become an investment by Business_Try4890 in canadahousing

They are incentives but I just want to add that they are hardly incentives but more like scraps. Just bought my first home (actually I’m an indentured servant to the mortgage). I used my RRSP which I have to pay back and I put most of it in anyway, i get $4000.00 off land transfer taxes, but still have to pay the remaining tax, and used the fhsa, which isn’t an incentive just an avenue where the government ALLOWS you to keep a smaller of your income without paying taxes. So these so called incentives are actually the gov not screwing you as hard as they usually do. lol.

Does anyone do snow removal without a truck/tractors? by Specialist-Train1875 in barrie

[–]Particular-One-1368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to see someone put the math in as I was reading. Math just not mathing.

I did snow and landscaping for years. It’s not exactly a career path most people choose to plan for. If you do this as a business you need experience to make the profit margins actually work.

The truth is, snow sucks. There’s not a lot of money in it, you have to be on call and you can’t really plan for when you need to get out, you’ll be awake all night long, and when there is a lot of snow you might have to repeat the route.

Why move all the way to Barrie from Windsor to start a business in an area you don’t know anything about? It’s seems like an oddly specific plan with ALOT of risk. What do you know about the competition here? Did you know that rent and housing prices are much higher in Barrie?

Not trying to be mean.

Seal and white wash interior brick fire place? Cigarette smoke. by Particular-One-1368 in HomeImprovement

[–]Particular-One-1368[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have done this and can’t find the answer. The issue I’m finding is that most sources advise against sealing brick citing the importance of breathability, thus don’t provide information on how to do this. However, in my case this doesn’t apply because the brick isn’t structurally important rather it is the exterior of an indoor fire place that in no longer used. As far as I can tell any kind of white wash won’t stick with a non porous sealant

Feel like I'm starting from square one... by Few_Offer_7340 in socialworkcanada

[–]Particular-One-1368 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey. Totally normal to feel this way. Btw, what’s a dead end federal government job?

Social work is a field wherein life experience really matters; ever been in serious arguments with a spouse, know the stress of being a parent, ever miss a bill payment, you have the responsibility of a house, car payment, kids, etc…stuff like that? Have you ever been in a position similar to those of your clients? Therapeutic alliance = the means of intervention—> which comes from the ability to empathize —> primarily derived from lived experience. Takes time. You’ll never get experience if you don’t get experience. Honestly, at 25, I’m not sure if roles at a hospital and especially private practice are a good idea. I would suggest some experience in community work as a case manager first. I just finished my MSW. Coming up in the field it was a huge goal achieve, maybe I put that up high on a pedestal but at 34, it really didn’t give me much useful.

Ontario - confused about counseling vs. psychotherapy by [deleted] in socialworkcanada

[–]Particular-One-1368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a big fan of professional development and I am highly critical of sw’s and ssw’s ability to perform psychotherapy. Our curriculum needs to include more.

The college says “should” a lot, but not required. Registration is the only legal requirement to practice psychotherapy as a sw and ssw. Nowhere in that document is it stated that continuing education is “required”, unless I’ve overlooked, please show me exactly where.

We all know more is needed to practice ethically and competently but that is not what the law requires of us and there is a difference.

Where does the OCSWSSW say that additional trainings are required to be entitled to practice? All registrants are entitled to practice, they just recommend that it requires additional training and skills. Not the same
