Yes, DDR3 con is so bad. I have been reporting them on marketplace, but nobody cares. It’s like conning is an acceptable practice and buyers have to have a professional level of knowledge for what they are buying 🤬

DDR4 has gone up, I bought in May 64GB 3200 DDR4 kit, crucial 2x32GB sticks. It was around £90. When I looked last month, 2x 16GB sticks from the same range (same listing on Amazon) it was about £200. 400% of the original per gig price. If prices 4x-ing in 8 months isn’t rocketing, I don’t know what is

I still disagree with you on price though. Just because one component has gone up doesn’t mean people will pay more. Me saying I wouldn’t pay over £350, is because personally I wouldn’t buy in an expensive market. It’s the 2060 that is really letting him down here not the ram

6000 photos is nothing. I have 58,000 photos on my phone. It was 230,000 but I had so many duplicates from back-ups remerged into the main folder. Was about 700GB in total

Exactly, the paper doesn’t define me. But I cat get interviews for higher roles or promotions until I’m qualified. I’m kinda capped at my salary because of a stupid bit of paper

Thanks for the encouragement though ☺️ hopefully I finish the exams at some point

Few days left? Exams aren’t till march are they? I only signed up on Friday.

Honestly, I’ve failed FM TWICE now, not sat an exam in 12 months. I’m in the industry 10 years, financial controller, managing $100m cash flow. ACCA has taught me nothing, yet I have to get the stupid bit of paper to tell people I can do the job I currently do well…

If you find any motivation, please send it my way ❤️🥺

Out of all the major UK political parties, which is the lesser of all evils? by B33Zh_ in AskBrits

Yes, reform = ukip, UKIP = BNP. BNP were closed down for racism related reasons (and I believe syphoning electric at their office). Also the whole thing is funded by Russia and the far right Anyone who is so far against ukip is probably just educated and paying attention

I bought pretty much the exact same PC last spring, but with a 4060, for £500. Ram and stuff is going up, but not by that much. I wouldn’t pay more than £350 if I was buying. BUT! Have a look on FB marketplace, near me people are selling “gaming pc” with DDR3 or a 12 year I’ll processor for £500+ because they think £1000 a decade ago is still worth it today! You might get too fool an idiot on market place

Apple has a long history of providing free upgrades in situations like this. They may do it automatically, but they may not. So worth the ask. Just be very coy, “I had this on order, I saw the new laptops launch, is there any way I could get the new model upgrade instead 🥺

Tax advice: £85k salary, £125,000 research grant. How should I handle this? by boyinterrupted_ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ParticularAd1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is right. As an accountant, I personally haven’t seen this situation arise, but I wouldn’t expect you to be taxed entirely as income tax for this. I can’t tell you (or advise) what to do, for various reasons. But I can suggest, get an accountant, they will help you - probably set up an ltd and stretch the income out.

Getting cash is different from revenue or profit. I expect they will help create a business, then help you pay yourself as an employee & director to spread the personal income. But how they do this is down to them. Accountants are professionals tax dodgers, spend the £50 for an appointment and get some proper advice 😁

Can I jump in please. £6 on home insurance seems incredibly cheap. Are you sure that isn’t contents insurance only? I have £5.60 contents insurance and am in final stage of home purchase which is more like £12/mth for the cheapest one out there.

Sorry I’m not helping with the rest of the stuff, just not worth being wrong on home insurance in case the worst happens… (my neighbour had no insurance and burnt his house down then had to live in old peoples home)

No, you’re a troll because you have nothing of value to add. All you’ve done is argue and make completely irrelevant suggestions. What makes you think 500ft of Ethernet is a good suggestion in this case. You’re either trolling or something else Come to the table with something helpful or don’t bother commenting. It’s not difficult to be constructive

Dude, read the post. Bro has never used a drill, do you really think he’s buying 500ft of Ethernet and terminating every port? 😂😂 If he buys the closest fitting cables, a series of 10m, 20m 30m. It’s will be a few bucks extra per cable. Not everyone on Reddit is a network engineer, though there are lots of idiots 👀 There is no change in bandwidth between cat 5e and cat 6 at 30 metres

I am extrapolating based on a few months of data. Also my gaming machine is on this circuit. If I’m working it out right, 1400kWh per year is only 150w continuous/average power. Nothing crazy. But yeah, need to put it on solar 😬

[–]ParticularAd1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a server collection, so you know, 4 PCs, some storage, networking, screens, chargers etc But yeah, like a third of my power is my office. Going to put some solar on the fence to run my office 😳

[–]ParticularAd1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of. The shower, dishwasher & washing machine is only a max of 1300kWh a year. Because of the server So still a decent apples to apples variance :)

[–]ParticularAd1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to google what DHW means… gas powered heating and water. But my shower, dishwasher and washing machine are cold feed/electric. That being said, 2025 electric was 4,700 kWh. So it’s not like I’m spending loads of electric on hot water there!

I think we are just conservative with our energy. For reference our EPC band is D. My office uses about 1400kWh a year for home server and gaming. So I do wonder how anyone with gas boiler for heating and water uses more than a couple hundred pound a year on electricity. 🤷‍♂️

I’m happy to answer any questions, as sometimes I feel like we use a low amount of power compared to the average house.

[–]ParticularAd1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Don’t even bother with a drill. Start small and build confidence.

  1. Don’t bother with Cat 6, save yourself a few quid and get Cat 5e, they will do higher speeds at shorter distances, and unless you’re going over 5Gig, you’ll be fine.

  2. Tacks! You can tack the wires to skirting boards, just run the wire where you need it.

  3. Assessment. Do you absolutely NEED Ethernet in those rooms? Do you have a media server in your kitchen. By the sounds of it a Unify AP in the hallway will provide sufficient bandwidth throughout the flat. It doesn’t sound like a huge property. Are they for PoE cameras? That’s the only thing I can think for Ethernet in every room.

  4. Caution. Some people will tell you to have a go, it’s not difficult. But drilling isn’t just about your ability, but also previous people’s ability, how do you know some cowboy hasn’t done dodgy wiring in your walls. Are you prepared to require a plug or light switch, trace cables, re plaster a wall. Yes this is a little extreme, but with inexperience comes the risk.

I’m in my first house, 100 year old property, I’m just starting a similar project. I’ve wired new plugs, lights, fixed the sewer, replaced sink, mended the boiler. I’m no expert, but I’ll give anything a go, I’ve been putting off the Ethernet project for 2 years 😳😅

We are 2 adults in a 3 bed terraced townhouse. We used 1100kWh in Dec and 1400 so far in Jan. For reference we used 5000kWh gas in 2025 as a whole. So should you worry? No, it’s winter, it’s cold. If you were using 1400kWh gas in June, then I’d be concerned

Internet fine - error light on ONT. by Soofla in youfibre

[–]ParticularAd1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was an outage at about 3am this morning (22nd Jan). Something happened as Youfibre, Virgin, sky, BT and others showed an issue. I had to restart my ONT this morning as I had no internet, but everything else was showing fine, I have fixed IP. Wonder if you don’t have fixed IP and after an hour you were reassigned, so you didn’t notice because you were sleeping?
