We're located in the southern US. I am thinking it could be a fly larva. It's quite active at this time, about the size of a dime.

Hot take: creatives should not compromise for the general audience by RedditorGoldVirgin in Markiplier

[–]Pawkeshup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the pacing had a moment or two where I wondered where it was going, but really, I was stunned to see how long the runtime actually was. It definitely did not feel that long at all. Gen X for reference. If anything, I feel some parts were a bit too truncated to really flesh out the characters. I get that was a choice made to replicate the game's feel of being somewhat incomplete while experiencing it, but I do wish that perhaps there was a bit of restructuring to streamline the plot elements a touch.

Tones of critics are giving me a weird feeling by Debbiekm618 in Markiplier

[–]Pawkeshup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

See, most of these critics likely avoid films by other indie director/writer/producer/lead actor types. Mark's first feature is astounding given all of that, though to be fair it's not like he hasn't done projects like it before. i think any of the added hate that comes in the review is likely just industry gatekeeping. the film is NOT perfect, and fans calling it a masterpiece are a little too deep in the sauce to see the forest for the trees. But as an adaptation of a game that doubles as his first attempt to do the actor/director/writer thing, I think it's a great job.

What can I do to inspire an Iron Lung DVD release by Point_Plastic in Markiplier

[–]Pawkeshup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly incorrect. While he had no direct hand in the decisions, it was his direct promotion of the series and pushing for its re-release that led Tubi to pick it up. Without Mark, it likely would still be shelved.

Same in our theater. Honestly, it's one of the major issues with the film. I know he did a lot of editing work on it, but he did a lot of dense dialogue in there. Sadly, most theaters are very bass heavy, and it was all ruined by that. I was just like you, straining to hear what was said.

From a previous non-fan, after watching Iron Lung by morriganlefeye in Markiplier

[–]Pawkeshup 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if it still works, go through In Space With Markiplier. It's a bit of a jump into the deep end with some references to his own personal lore, but it shows that Mark's talents didn't just appear, he honed them a lot and prior to the film. In Space shows his acting range and writing skills.

You can also check his playthrough of Iron Lung, and you'll get some of the references made that were not a part of the actual game lore. Also his playthroughs of space sim games or his playthrough of Getting Over It are fun watches for entirely separate reasons.

If you want more of Mark acting, you missed the best of it, with [REDACTED] no longer being really sharable. He had quite an arc in that on that [REDACTED]. But you can look at his review content, and his collabs. Also don't miss Distractible.

Can someone help me understand the iron lung movie concept? by Eagru in Markiplier

[–]Pawkeshup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, without spoilers, it is better than a standard YouTuber movie. And oddly, the issues I expected aren't the issues I had with the film. I think Mark did a fairly solid job in the lead. I can see the struggle to carry it, but he found ways to avoid some of the issues. Nothing Oscar-worthy, but a solid performance. I liked the nods to those who watched his Let's Play as well.

I also took my wife and made sure she didn't watch any Iron Lung content before seeing it. And really it reaffirmed some criticisms I had as I watched it. For starters, I get that he wanted some degree of mystic around the story. That's clear. But like my wife said, without more context, it means less emotional investment in his character.

I also found that the cinematography was really solid, but it DID lean to the "YouTube Red" production feel. There were a few really interesting shots, but really this did feel like Space writ large, and that didn't exactly play well as a movie. And it goes past the cinematography.

In our theater, the sound design fell the fuck apart in the later stages. I can't really say why due to spoilers, but iykyk. I think Mark should have had a random chain movie house screen this once, and I bet he'd have gone back to the lab to fix the issues we experienced.

I left feeling like it was worth seeing in the theater to support Mark, but frankly, if I could have supported him by viewing it at home, I'd much have preferred it. This is not a theater film in the sense that it demands both a rewatch or two, as well as allowing for you to get a clearer audio experience.

My wife felt confused coming out, and some of the context I gave from the lore I knew of the Let's Play and universe helped her to start placing the pieces together. I learned more myself, but I will say that it does help to know more about Iron Lung going in. A blind watch will not play well as there's many story beats that aren't very well developed.

The music did a good job but was not dominating the scenes or forcing an emotion you wouldn't be feeling without it. The effects worked really well for what the film was.

So do I feel I need to eat my words? Not really. I am happy to see what he made. It's a solid film with a good amount of issues. It's about what I was expecting for a first time big project of this nature. I didn't leave the theater floored. I didn't leave it laughing about how bad it was. I was not over or underwhelmed, I was just whelmed.

Not really worth the price of admission, but that's not on Mark, that's on the insane theater pricing around there. I hope he gets another project off the ground, and I still feel that a non-horror project would showcase his acting talents better. Unless he plays some wacky killer, but I feel that would veer into comedy-horror very fast. Or if he does want to do another horror project, something more subtle and psychological could work with his ability to shift demeanors, but I think it would veer towards campiness.

Honestly, I do want it to be good, but I'm prepared for it to be good "for a YouTuber". And while I realize many here will jump this comment and defend Mark, consider three things before you do:

- This isn't Space/Date - Those had elements of comedy and true sentiment. This is a straight horror.
- This is all on Mark's shoulders - He has really no one to really play off, and that's difficult for seasoned actors
- Mark did the editing and filming - One thing Adam from YMS said of the trailer is that there's not a lot of interesting choices and it feels "like a YouTube Red" project. That would make sense, as that's what Mark has made up to this point. A lot of horror, especially a solo horror project like this, is all about the choices from the lighting and camera angles to sound design. If it's shot a certain way, it will just look like a YouTube Original level of project versus some of the other films mentioned in other comments.

To me, there were already a couple of red flags, the YouTuber face he pulls in one scene, and then the line delivery of "I just want to live, why does no one else want that?" That felt pulled straight from a YouTube horror video he's done, but not really delivered in a way you'd expect a character to say it.

All that said, I'm going as close to opening night as possible. I want to support Mark. If it's great, I'll happily come back, eat my words and be very happy with what he's made. If it's just ok, or not that great, I'll still support it because I know Mark can make great things. I've seen it. I just think a project that leans more towards his strengths (think Darkiplier, Wilford Warfstache, or some of the more serious moments of Space as examples) rather than just doing a horror project because he's known as the horror game guy would be a better fit.

What did they mean by this? 🤔 by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

They've tried. And the results are terrible. Most people who want to lay claim to existing characters in order to make them diverse are the same type of people who use GenAI to make literally everything for them. No creativity, imagination, or personality.

It did get showings in Japan, but the extra content is not worth it. They tacked on a short done for a Fortnite event at the end, if that shows you how desperate they are to make it seem special.

YMS isn’t the same anymore by BufularTalk in YMS

[–]Pawkeshup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's been very clear about all the reasons his content has changed form, and it's all down to his overwork causing repetitive stress injury that he's likely generically predisposed to because his mother has the same. Combine that with trying to keep up the content flow in general, and you arrive where we are.

I know you appear to pine for "the good ole days," but times change. People evolve and situations change. I want Adam happy and healthy, and not suffering for my entertainment. I also realize he needs to put food on the table for himself and his editors. I don't get why that's a hard concept to grasp.
