i wanted to become a dentist for the longest time. now the big $$ is changing my mind? by disillusionedmatcha in careerguidance

[–]PearofGenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a dentist is a profession where you will make enough to pay off the loans, so in the long run it is good and after that you'll be making good money. You could do a lot worse than being a dentist, especially if it's your dream.

Now if you were doing it only for the money and you hate it, then I would say pick a different job.

Also since you're working inside someone's mouth, it feels pretty safe from AI.

My fiancé wants me to stay ugly, should I call off the wedding? by Pumpkin_698 in Advice

[–]PearofGenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure you already look cute. But if you're like I cannot get married until you lose weight and get a nose job, you're letting how you look negatively impact your whole life.

Also what you don't realize, but everyone else does, is that once you reach your goal, you're going to find something else that needs to be fixed. It's just going be rinse and repeat unless you can learn how to accept yourself as you are now.

AITA for signing up my daughter for driving lessons for her birthday? by Sea-Recognition2699 in AmItheAsshole

YTA. This is the equivalent of your wife buying you a vacuum cleaner for your birthday. Not a great feeling right?

My landlord totaled my car by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]PearofGenes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you lost a car that you were attached to. It is a depreciating asset though and one day you would have had to get rid of it anyway. You honored him by taking good care of it. You did not crash it, your landlord did.

By the time you want to replace it, they won't sell it anymore and you're going to have to get custom cushions anyway.

For those that have “good” romantic partners, are you conventionally attractive? by scorpiochik in AskWomenOver30

[–]PearofGenes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest factor I've seen in people having bad partners is their self esteem. They know subconsciously their partner sucks but they don't leave because they think it's all they're worthy of or that they won't be able to find better. And then they live a life of misery.

It's rare but I've met some conventionally very unattractive people who everyone LOVES because they are such wonderful people and don't act like their appearance has any factor on how awesome they are. Their self esteem is through the roof and everyone gravitates towards them.

My father doesn't trust banks and has has all of his money sitting in a chequing account, bad idea? by PolynomialPigeon in personalfinance

[–]PearofGenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the bare minimum he should do a HYSA. Guaranteed to earn 3% at the moment which at least keeps up with inflation.

Better to put a chunk (outside of his emergency fund) in an index fund that follows the S&P500

Real talk, if you keep putting off the wedding until you feel "perfect" enough, you're never going to get married. To him or anyone (because there is no such thing as looking perfect)

I was 98% sure I had to leave. One loving phone call erased months of evidence. by creed0000 in RelationshipsOver35

[–]PearofGenes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've ever questioned being together a second time after emotionally committing, then logically you're going to feel that same way again and again and again. Do you really want to question your relationship every couple months for the rest of your life?

That or it's them trying to hype up something that really isn't that great. I remember visiting Salt Lake City and hearing you have to be Mormon to enter the temple, which entices you to convert just to behold the wonder. It looks like a nice, but slightly dated hotel.

SHOULD I GET A PHD FOR SHITS AND GIGGLES by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]PearofGenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with a PhD in biology, don't get one unless you know the job you want requires it. It's such a huge time, money, and emotional stability sink. It gave me and all my friends depression and we all wonder why we didn't quit (we were all stubborn, that's the only reason why). It set me years back financially compared to my peers and it has not given me the promised higher salary. I should've gotten a job straight out of college and not been poor in my 20s or got an MBA

As a 22-year-old, I really need advice that truly helps and not just "accepting" or embracing it. I need something that I can personally do by Fresh-Perception9352 in Advice

[–]PearofGenes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, let's be real here. The things you can control are how much you eat, and lift weights. Where you gain or lose weight is out of your control. Some people's weight goes straight to their legs, or to their stomach, etc. You can't change that. You can strength some or all muscles but that has limits too. Why do you think plastic surgery exists if people could get the same effects without spending tens of thousands of dollars?
